I ordered the vegetable skewer today via DoorDash. I found the Israeli salad to be rather salty. The pieces of tomato and cucumber were the perfect size though. It seems that the vegetables from the vegetable skewer were grilled in a lot of oil. This affected the texture. There was quite a bit of oil left in the container as well. The pita was still warm when it arrived at my house. The pita and hummus were the best I have ever had. I would return just for the pita and hummus, but not for the salad or vegetables unless I was able to request light oil. read more

We've had Oren's countless times in the past many years - this review is definitely long overdue! We've also had take-out from them a few times...but somehow the food always tastes better in-person at the restaurant, haha. We've tried a good number of items on the menu as we liked to get the sampler dish & sometimes we will mix and match a la carte side/dip items. Their hummus is always on point and salads are always a nice add-on if you want extra veggies in your diet. I always feel like the skewer plate is not enough food until the plate comes with the sides and then I realize that it is indeed more than enough food for one person, lol. The pita sandwich is always a good alternative if you're on the go and want something quick and easy to eat. First time at Oren's Hummus and I enjoyed the food. The Pita Falafel was light and tasty. I liked the hot sauce and green sauce that it came with. Nicely packaged in a easy to carry box. White or whole wheat pitas to choose from. At first walking up to the host/hostess stand, I asked to see a menu for takeout and the woman said to look on the window for the menu posted. So glad OH has this location close to home. We had previously gone to the University Avenue location some years ago and remembered enjoying ourselves back then. This time, we ordered their Classic Hummus, Greek Salad, Falafel (2 orders), a la carte skewered Chicken, and Baba Ganoush. Everything was tasty, especially paired with their two hot sauces. Beware of the Green monster though! Their pita bread is thick but airy, working well as a vehicle for all of the items we ordered. This review of Oren's has been long overdue on my part. I've been to Oren's Hummus several times, and my overall impression of Oren's is a positive one. Oren's is pretty accommodating with seating and can hold large parties. If you're in for some fresh air or people watching, there's plenty of tables for dining outside facing Castro St. I've never came across issues with service as the wait staff has always been friendly and attentive. Most importantly, the food is great... I typically get the baba ganoush. The eggplant is roasted just enough to give the dip a nice smokiness to it. I'm also a huge fan of the fried cauliflower side. It's flash fried and not thickly battered, so I feel that it's a much healthier version compared to places like Veggie Grill where their fried cauliflower florets are dredged. Even though the fried cauliflower is not caked in batter, it's seasoned well with salt and pepper to give it so much savory flavor. The side comes with a whipped buttery dip that's very light. The classic hummus at Oren's is thick and creamy. It's totally good as a standalone item, but when topped with the different meats, veggies, etc. it kicks up the hummus. My favorite is the lamb one. The lamb is juicy, tender, and not super gamey. You'd be surprised at how filling the hummus bowls are. I can never finish them in one sitting, which makes for awesome leftovers! The hummus at Oren's is just as good the next day. I love the pitas at Oren's. They're so fluffy! And the pitas have a sponginess to them, so they hold up so well with all the sopping up of hummus and other sauces. Today I had the Green Skakshuka for the first time, which was OK. Didn't make my favorite list, but it was worth trying at least once. It consisted of 2 poached eggs in a spinach and kale cream sauce. The cheeses that topped the dish gave it much needed saltiness, otherwise the spinach/kale cream sauce was pretty plain. I also thought that the poached eggs could've been cooked a bit longer. The food we had was very good. First, the free pickled coleslaw salad was excellent. Even asked for seconds, which they graciously accommodated. Then, we had the quick-fried cauliflower (generous portion) with a dipping sauce. Very good. And then the chicken skewers, side of falafel, pickles and olives, and a big Greek salad, including sheep Feta. We appreciated the use of the traditional sheep Feta since sometimes businesses buy the cheaper cow feta. Only thing that was a bit weird was the Malabi dessert. The rosewater was a bit strange and made it taste odd. I have had this dessert before elsewhere and there was something about this rosewater taste that was not appealing. After being a spectator on watching Oren's expand out here in the Bay Area over the past decade, I finally got a chance to try one out. It is casual yet slightly upscale due to real/nice plates and silverware. The theme is Mediterranean and more specifically Isreali. They also have beer and wine, which many mom/pop Mediterranean places do not. Upon entering, it looks like it would be a counter service type place, as a huge counter area takes up one whole wall. But it does offer sit-down service, where a server will take your order via a hand held point-of-sale device. The menu is pretty focused and pretty easy to figure out. Beef/Lamb Kebab ($21/3.5) The meat is actually a ground meat mix much like a kofte kabob, so it isn't chunks of meat. It is seasoned nicely, onion, garlic and herbs are pretty bold. A tad salty, but better that than the other way. It was pretty dense, which is my main knock. Like it was hard to cut/break with a fork. I really had to use a knife to cut into it. Chicken Kabob ($20/4*) Here they use large chunks of boneless/skinless thigh meat. Bold spicing which is heavy on the cumin. Grilled nice, I'm assuming from a flat top grill as there weren't any grill marks/char. Crazy juicy though, which makes this a winner. Beef Kabob Rice Bowl ($16/2*) Same beef kofte, which was the good part. But the other half of the dish, which is the rice was strange and not received well. First it was redish so it was heavily seasoned. Also had good amount of herbs, with mint being detected. Many Mediterranean preps for rice are usually much more plain, usually nicely cooked fluffy basmati. Here it was also really wet and sticky. So a far cry from the usual fluffy stuff. I think they should just switch to a more basic/traditional prep, since it goes well with the highly flavored meats. Sides tried since our kabob plates come with 2 each, which is really generous. Hummus (4*) Had to try this as it is in their name. Very creamy so super easy to dip their nice fluffy soft pita into. A little bland but that's cuz when I make my own hummus at home, I tend to go more non traditional with roasted garlic and lemon. So maybe this version is more meant to get topped with other ingredients, which their menu allows you to do. Falafels (3*) Smaller versions and very crispy on the exterior. The interior is pretty fluffy and quite garlic-y which I like. The fry is really dark for some reason, almost looks burnt, but it didn't taste burnt at all. Go figure. Baba Ghanoush (4*) Solid, smoky pureed eggplant with protocol seasoning. Not the best I've had, but no where near the bottom either. Labneh (3*) This is like a cream cheese made out of tangy yogurt. Same tang as American cream cheese, but much softer and spreadable. Topped with virgin olive oil and a sprinkling of za'atar seasoning. Nice touch, but couldn't really taste it, womp womp. Turkish Coffee ($3.50/4*) Same portioning and intensity as Italian espresso, even has the same "creamy" surface. But this version is much grittier, like the super fine grind is intentionally left to linger in both the cup and the palate. Can't say I loved it, but it definitely was a unique experience. Service pretty good, they offered to help with the menu but we didn't really need it. They checked up on us, once from the server and another with a manager/supervisor, so they are diligent. They have a "living wage" fee attached to the bill so there will be another line to observe. 3% is what I remember seeing. We have a lot of options from my area for this type of food, mostly being mom/pop shops. And those same mom/pop shops are about $5 less per entree, so it makes Oren's a pricier out. So to take a drive for it is out of the question for me, but if cruising the strips of Mt. View or Palo Alto, then I suppose can be a viable option. read more

This was my first visit to Oren's Mountain View location, and I was happy to see that their quality is up to par with the original location in Palo Alto. It wasn't busy since we came for a super late lunch/early dinner at 3:30pm on a Sunday. I actually wanted the Oren's Eggplant, but they gave me the babaganoush by mistake. It was still good, but I would've preferred the Oren's Eggplant, which is really good. The beef kabob were solid- a tiny bit dry/dense, but very good flavors. Their hummus is some of the best/most authentic hummus I've had outside of Israel. The kabob plate was a little pricey at $21, but it was almost enough for 2 to share (depending on how much pita you order). I will be back to Oren's, and will likely opt for their shashuka or sabich the next time around. Parking in downtown Mountain View can be difficult, but it was fine during an off hour on Sunday (you can find street parking or spots in the various lots in downtown). read more

Update: in case anyone was wondering, the owners did comment here but never got back to me. So might just be lip service to show concern here. Review stays the same. It was my first night in Mountain View for a new job and I was looking forward to my first business meal. Unfortunately I was left disappointed. The idea seems cool, a place whose speciality is hummus. Having been to Lebanon I have high standards but I am usually ok with average hummus in the US. My problem is however with the chicken and the falafel were stale tasting. The Falafel was the coldest I have ever been served. It was obvious they were stale and maybe externally warmed. The chicken was warm but super tough again indicative of reheating. It was nicely flavored and would have tasted good fresh but the dry chicken just didn't cut it. Maybe it was because I was visiting on Sunday night but I cannot forgive a restaurant for serving cold/lukewarm food. The sauces were pretty good. I want to start out by saying that this place has some really tasty food. I know my star count doesn't reflect that but it's mainly due to the recent service I've been getting. I come here all the time and lately the customer service has been either the bare minimum or simply non-existent. My poor friend almost died of dehydration since it took so long to find a server who could refill his iced tea. My go to for this delightful creation called a Sabbich. Its a cross between egg salad and potato salad served in a Pita, and full of yum! The menu has everything we want, from Keto options to kids food. My daughters favorite is the schnitzel pita. The only negative is parking at either the Cupertino or Castro location.
