i really like Dr. Chang but the secretary who was on the phone- I believe her name is Michelle - was incredibly rude. She asked for some information for my patient profile and when I simply asked a clarifying question, she rudely said "i just need it to fill out your patient data!" - very unprofessional. Cancelled my appointment and booked somewhere else. read more

I went here today for my routine eye exam and could not have been more pleased with the level of service. I've had bad luck finding a great provider in the area, as my past experiences with two providers were subpar. One was extremely disorganized and lacked the ability to follow-up to my concerns. The second provider I went to rushed through the exam (it was maybe 15-20 minutes), and she didn't really seem that interested in her patients - it felt like an exam factory. Dr. Chang at Optimum Vision Care was a complete 180. She actually took the time to discuss with me my questions and provided a high level of care and concern for my eye health. I did not feel like I was being rushed out the door. She had a great bedside manner and sense of humor. I also was confused about an exam fee and got a little bewildered, but Dr. Chang addressed my concerns on that as well. Totally my error in interpreting something and was satisfied with the level of professionalism by the entire staff. I was getting a little frustrated in finding an optometry practice to establish myself as a patient, so I'm happy I found Optimum Vision Care. I'll definitely be back! read more

Dr. Chang and Katie the receptionist are awesome! I always get great care and attention from them both! And they take my endurance:) I would recommend them warmly:) maya:) read more

I went to the practice to get an eye exam and ordered a pair of eyeglasses. I was told that my order will be ready within 1 week, but I did not receive my pair of eyeglasses after waiting for 30 days. Throughout this process, I had to constantly call them and check on the status. I finally got a call to go pick up my glasses. When I first received it, I immediately noticed that the lens is much thicker than what I used to have. I was puzzled, because I paid for the highest and most expensive index (1.74) lens. I checked with Dr. Chang multiple times on whether this new lens was correctly made with the highest index and she assured me it is. I went home, measured and compared the thickness of the new lens against my old one. I realized that the new one is about twice as thick as the old one. The lens was also made with very poor quality: when I looked through the glasses, there were many red glares. I went back to Dr. Chang the same day, showed her the thickness differences and mentioned the glares that I am seeing. She still insisted that it is the highest index lens but agreed to check with the lab for me. The following day, I received an email from her confirming that the lab did use a lower index (1.67) lens for my glasses since it is difficult to make with the highest index lens (1.74). I am very concerned about the professionalism of this practice. When I first received my eyeglasses, even though I made Dr. Chang aware that the lens is thicker than usual, she insisted that this is the highest index. If I did not measure and compared my old lens against the new lens at home, I would have settled with the lower index (1.67) lens without knowing it. The lower index lens (1.67) is much cheaper compared to the highest index lens (1.74). When a doctor receives glasses from the lab, they usually examine it multiple times before giving them to their patients. It is difficult to believe that she cannot tell the thickness difference between index 1.74 vs. 1.67 while she sells these every day, but I, a non-profession, can notice it immediately upon receiving it. read more

I went here last year when I needed an updated contact prescription and had the best experience I've had at an eye doctor. They fit me in same day by luck and the doctor was extremely helpful, genuine and professional. Not much could get me to go to any other place than here from now on. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Definitely worth going to. read more

Dr. Chang is a great eye doctor. She is really nice and caring for her patients, and she puts a lot of effort into finding the best things for you. I currently have ortho-k contacts, and thanks to her, I have 20/20 vision everyday after wearing them every night! She is a great doctor, and I highly recommend her to everyone. It is located in a nice neighborhood with a good view from outside. She has great credentials, and is a very trustworthy person. read more

I made an appointment for my daughter to get an eye exam here so she could get her contact lenses refilled. She is 20 years old. $408 later, they totally took advantage of her innocence. They charged us for a "comprehensive" eye exam as well as a contact lens exam, plus the cost of the contacts. When I called and spoke to Sarah I was told that my daughter was fully aware of the costs involved. I have been to the eye dr many times and have never been charged such an exorbitant fee as this ripoff place charged us. I asked "Sarah" to please speak with her person in charge to see about a credit for one of the exams since they are truly one in the same, but of course, I have not heard back. She did, however, explain to me that they bill like that for insurance purposes, because vision insurance covers the "comprehensive" exam but a contact lens exam is considered "cosmetic". In other words, they are double billing and people who don't have vision insurance pay out of pocket double. We will be looking for an honest eye dr for our next visit. read more

I was referred to Dr Julia Chang by another practice when I called to find a new optometrist. I'm so glad they pointed me in her direction! She is probably the best eye doctor I've been to, and I've seen a whole lot of them in my time. I've been in glasses since kindergarten and in contacts since high school and Dr Chang is the first doctor to really talk to me about some of the things that I've noticed - floaters - that no one has ever mentioned, and also to tell me about some things that I had no idea about that no other doctor has ever mentioned before. She was super nice on the phone and got me in on the same day when I had an unexpected day off of work. She gave me my contact prescription with no trouble at all and an extra pair of contacts to hold me over. I only have two small complaints, and they aren't even enough to dock a star. First, it seems like Dr Chang is running the place all by herself. While I was dilating we were talking about my eye history, but the phone up front rang and she had to run and pick it up. It wasn't a problem, but it's too bad she has to worry about that kind of thing while she's with a patient. Second, she has a very, very limited number of styles of frames. I totally understand that investing in funkier frames is a riskier prospect, but I really like frames with a lot more personality than the ones she has, so I've been looking elsewhere for a pair of frames to bring in to her to get filled. read more

Dr. Chang has been my family doctor for over a decade now in various locations and she has never disappointed once. I'm so happy that her practice has been up and running now for so long! Her service and attention to detail is impeccable. She really cares about each individual patient that comes to see her. Sometimes, giving each patient specialized care does cause her to run overtime a little during exams, but waiting for Dr. Chang is well worth the wait. Dr. Chang is one of the sweetest, nicest doctors I've ever met and I look forward to my yearly eye exams while also supporting small businesses in my area. read more

I've had a pair of glasses for about two years that never "fit right". I hated wearing them because they made me dizzy and out of focus, so I relied on my contacts as my primary vision correction. A previous optometrist stated that it was my prescription differential (there is a -1.5 difference between my eyes), and there wasn't much I could do. However, my current optometrist suggested I get the sides adjusted to better fit my face. Dr. Chang and her assistant did an amazing adjustment on my frames for a reasonable fee of $20 (as I had not purchased the frames from her practice). I actually can wear them all day and not feel as if I'm walking through a fog. I have a great experience at my current optometrist--but I would definitely become a patient here if I had a need. read more

Found a new optometrist! Dr. Chang is friendly, knowledgeable, and explained what she was doing throughout the exam and why (this was a new experience for me at an eye dr.). I was trying to get a new script ASAP and got in next day. She didn't try to push glasses on me since she knew I only wanted an updated prescription, and then faxed it to lenscrafters for me. read more

Dr. Chang is nice, funny, generous and all-over impressive. The minute I walked in she printed off all my insurance policies (I have more than one) and she explained how I could get the best deal possible. No way I would have gotten (or have ever gotten) such a deal! She was also happy to answer all my questions, listen to my eye history, and make me feel comfortable in understanding my eye needs. Now I just need to go back to make sure I want the glasses that I picked out today. read more

I wish I could give Dr. Chang 10 stars! I have dealt with a couple of other eye doctors before and after meeting Dr. Chang I can say that the previous ones were very terrible ones... She was so professional, friendly and informative, it seems like she really cares more about making sure her patients are able to see correctly rather than selling them whatever they need or don't need in order to make an extra buck or two. The first time I had contacts it was under another Doctor and the result of it was lots of discomfort and I basically ended up throwing my contacts away and never getting any more, I figured they just weren't for me. However after seeing Dr. Chang I decided to give them a second chance, she recommended the daily packages for me since my prescription is very low. Now I feel like I'm not wearing anything and I can finally say bye to my glasses on a night out when I need to drive!!! And to believe I spent so much $ before on Doctors who weren't even recommending the right product for me, what a shame! If you're looking for a very informative/friendly and professional optometrist who will not rip you off and give you unnecessary treatment/prescription go to this place. I assure you that from then on you will never want to go anywhere else! read more

tl;dr - This should be your new Optometrist if you live in Allston/Brighton. I looked a long time on yelp to find the best optometrist. Dr. Chang's 5-star average was spot on. She was an absolute pleasure to work with. She is personable and friendly. I went in expecting the normal in and out simple eye measurement and sale of contact lenses. What I got instead was a very friendly experience, Dr. Chang talked through every step of the appointment. When she got to the eye pressure measurement, turned out I had high eye pressure (new to me at this appointment) and she talked through all the possibilities and next steps. I have a follow up appointment and I will definitely be going back and recommending her to all my local friends. An absolute gem in the Allston/Brighton area. Thank you for the kind treatment. read more

Dr. Chang is hands-down the best optometrist I think I'll ever see. She and her staff are kind, caring, patient, courteous, and so much more. She provides detailed (and fascinating!) explanations about each test before she performs them, so that you feel comfortable with the procedure. My new prescription was like upgrading the entire world to high-definition. The most amazing part was, I was having difficulty picking out a frame, and she and her receptionist stayed open until 6 (they close at 5 normally!) excitedly helping me find the frame that would fit me and look the best. And boy, was it worth it - I absolutely love my new glasses and I keep getting compliments on them! If it's time for you to get a new pair of glasses or new contact lenses, do yourself and your eyes the generous favor of seeing Dr. Chang. You will love her! read more

Dr. Chang and her staff are fantastic! I had my first appointment the day after a big winter storm. She got at the clinic before her staff and greeted me as enthusiastically as a great receptionist would do. Walked me through all the paperwork and conducted me to the exam room herself (right after her receptionist have arrived). She is very warm and knowledgeable. I moved to Boston from Brazil and was confused about why eye / contact lenses exams are billed separately in the US. Since the next client had cancelled (because the after storm hurdles), she took her time to explain everything, answering patiently and happily to all my questions. When I left, her receptionist helped filling a check because my pupils were dilated. She was as nice and warm as Dr. Chang (next time I'll make sure to learn her name). I'm very happy to have found the eye doctor I hope to see (!) for the rest of my life. Not enough words to recommend her and her practice!!! read more

This was a great experience. Dr. Chang is amazing and made me feel so comfortable and like I was talking to a friend rather than at the doctors. It made adulting not stink. She was funny, patient, and considerate. You can tell she loves her job! She even explains everything she is doing. I recommend her hands down and think everyone should go here. read more

I came here to get some new glasses after 2 years and I loved it. The lady at the front desk was extremely helpful, kind, and talkative. The place is pretty small, but very well kept and organized. With a decent selection of frames. read more

Dr. Chang is awesome. She is very welcoming, thorough and easy to be around. I came in with an eye infection, she spoke me through what was going on with my eyes in a way I could understand, and helped me come up with a plan to fix the issue and keep it from happening. After a great experience with her throughout my eye infection, I decided to continue seeing her to get my glasses and contacts prescriptions. First time coming here today and had to write a positive review. Both Dr. Chang and the receptionist were wonderful - personable, kind, knowledgable, everything! Not only did Dr. Chang have an adorable sense of humor, but she explained everything she was doing as she did it, and asked my opinion and preference on everything she did. Highly HIGHLY recommended! read more

I've had a great experience of vision exam this afternoon. I went there to renew my glasses and contact lens prescription. Dr. Chang is professional and very friendly. She always knows exactly what I need and gives me many helpful advices by standing on my point. She helps me to check my insurance and suggests a best combination for everything I really need - never push me to buy glasses there as well as to buy anything less useful to me! Finally, I picked up a very nice glasses and a box of contact lens at a reasonable price. Very efficient! I found Dr. Change because of the earlier reviews -- they are right! I woke up this morning with extreme sensitivity to light. After previously having issues with corneal ulcers, I knew I needed to get seen ASAP. I called and spoke with Dr. Chang. Their office was closed today, but she was there and offered to see me on her day off. Not only did she see me, she spent a good amount of time with me and explained my condition and different medication options. I'm so grateful that I was able to get seen, be prescribed medication, and now I'm on the path to getting better. She's got a new patient in me! read more

I went here for the first time today, and was very pleased. Dr Chang was extremely thorough, explained everything clearly, and her friendly and charming personality put me at ease. She told me what to expect during each step of the eye exam and was patient, for example, when i needed to compare views of the test letters more than once to determine which lens made for the clearest picture. She determined that my previous prescription (which was giving me headaches and eye strain) was actually TOO strong. She clearly explained her reasoning, and gave me two test lenses of slightly different strengths to try out for the next couple weeks before i dive in and order the full year supply of contacts. She came across as genuinely caring about my eye situation, and didn't rush me outta there; i got to ask all the questions i wanted. Also the receptionist was friendly and very accommodating, helping me transfer my records and answering pricing questions handily. Excellent place; highly recommended! read more

I haven't wrote a single post on Yelp before. But This is an awesome vision care center that is worth the time to write one. Dr. Chang is really helpful in describing all of the procedures, and even help you pick out a pair of glass that fit nicely. This is certainly nice. read more

Dr. Chang is a terrible optometrist and a rude and dismissive person. When I got my eyes checked, she only let me use the test lenses for a couple minutes. I told her it was uncomfortable but she insisted she was too busy so I had to take them off. I didn't like any of the glasses they offered and her glasses were 4 times the price I could get them online. So I shopped around and found a pair I liked at another store. But after several days my eyes and head were really hurting. So I called Dr. Chang and she got really upset, saying that since I didn't buy my glasses from her it wasn't her problem, and refused to even double-check her previous assessment. She said that if I didn't like her prescription I should just go back to my previous two-year old prescription. I have a vision plan, but now I have to pay myself for another eye exam. read more

Dr. Chang is so nice and extremely patient. One of my biggest pet peeves is waiting for doctor's appointments (how many hours have we all wasted in our lives?) and I have never waited there. She's also super friendly and explains things clearly about my insurance and eye history. She never rushes you or makes you feel stupid. Other doctor's make you feel like you're a chore -- Dr. Chang is awesome. Can't say enough good things. read more

Dr. Chang is extremely friendly, thorough, and devoted to looking out for what's best for her patients. I have been going to her for years, and it's clear she loves what she does. Her positive energy is contagious and her sense of humor makes the exam almost enjoyable! As others have pointed out, she explains each part of the exam, and frequently checks to make sure you are comfortable and relaxed. She is careful not to over-correct your vision and takes your lifestyle and budget into careful consideration when making recommendations. For instance, I am near-sighted but spend most of the workday staring at a computer screen. Dr. Chang suggested that my prescription was too high for my everyday needs. She was right; she lowered my prescription, and I haven't even noticed a difference. She's also quick to whip out her calculator and find you the best deal your insurance has to offer. I am further impressed by her new receptionist, who remembered exactly who I was when I came in three weeks after my appointment to pick up my new contact lenses. That doesn't happen too often in the city. Best of all, Dr. Chang's appointments are quick, but do not feel at all rushed. Couldn't ask for more in an optometrist! read more
