I was very impressed with this restaurant, particularly the quality of the food. The complimentary appetizers (bread and warmed olive oil with olives, hummus with pita bread slices) were unexpected and delicious. The Greek wine selection was good and the one I ordered was very tasty. The fish special was absolutely divine. I can't wait to try more of their menu items like their dolmas or the spanakopita. Holy cow is this place delicious! I travel a lot and was really excited to see this as an option in Waterville. It's small but well laid out, and the bar is nice and comfortable. I ordered the fried cheese and the grilled eggplant... Yum! There are few things in life better than fried cheese, and this definitely raised the bar. It was served with a side of fig puree and was delicious! Crispy and cheesy and everything I wanted. The grilled eggplant was fabulous-- perfectly cooked on a bed of delicious tomato sauce, with caramelized onions and roasted mushrooms. I could eat this a hundred times over and be happy. House made sangria rounded out my meal at the bar. It was fruity and well balanced. My server was the bartender as well, and he was really pleasant! The family speaks Greek to each other and the whole thing is really authentic. I can't wait to eat here again the next time I'm working in Waterville. read more

I got the Opa burger and my husband got the Gyro. Holy cow was that burger delicious. I don't know what was on it but it was awesome. My hubs liked the gyro but said he'd get something else next time. I was so happy to have a different restaurant come into Waterville. The interior is very modern and clean. Service was excellent and very welcoming. The food was on the small side as far as portions go. I get that they are more of an upscale restaurant which in certain circumstances also relates to smaller portions but I truly hate that concept. If I'm paying a decent price for a meal I expect something that will fill me up not leave me wanting more. The presentation was beautiful and flavors were good. The chicken dishes were on the dry side and the kabobs were a little too charred to eat the whole piece. We did eat everything so it definitely wasn't bad, just left hungry still. Overall we will likely return because we love Mediterranean food and it's something different. read more

At last, a new restaurant opening in town, and they actually know how to do it, right from day one. It's ever frustrating for foodies to see new restaurants come and go in our little city, especially when the food is good, but the execution is not. To wit, a wonderful Italian restaurant closed over the holiday after a year and a half of benign neglect of the owner. The food was great, the concept was great, but we only ever saw the owner as a dining customer, never as a manager. Too bad that. They could have owned the night in Waterville. Opa has no such problem. The owner and creator is up front and present to greet and serve every customer. That's what it takes, let there be no question. The restaurant itself is modern, well lighted and decorated, and they use nice and trendy ware to serve their excellent food. I haven't yet counted chairs, but it looks like they can seat about 70 or so people at one time. The kitchen and bar is just about right to service this size crowd. We were wondering how long, if ever, it would take for a proper Greek restaurant to come to our town, or anywhere near us. Not only will they take some business from other down town spots, but they also will get new diners out of their houses, as this clientele, and this cuisine has been underserved for years. Good job, Opa, for spotting this opportunity. The menu is at once recognizable yet new, well sorted, and not overly ambitious. They offer a good number of Greek classics, and Greek-a-fied local favorites, and provide something for most everyone. The owner says he's keeping a log of customer requests, and has already responded to my wife's request for more vegetarian alternatives. He's added a delightful eggplant dish, right at the top of his menu. He maintains that the menu should be fluid and responsive, yet in touch with it's Greek base. We have dined at Opa two consecutive Saturdays, and in both cases had marvelous meals. The second visit found a waiting line out the door on this very cold night. No worries. We were soon whisked to our table by the owner's mom, a charming, vivacious Greek lady, so proud of her son and soon to be doctor daughter. In any Waterville restaurant, service can be dicey, and without a strong owner presence, wheels can come off with little notice. At Opa, it's a family approach that gets the job done. On our last visit, two servers and a cook had called out, but you'd not notice it by the timeliness of our food delivery, and there was no diminishment of quality. Everyone working in the place chipped in to make the flow work. So far, we have tried the pit and split pea dip...delicious and generous, Saganaki...fried chees on filo with fig preserve...yum, Hortasalata (green leaf salad) with beets, big and satisfying, spanakopita...the best I've ever had,Melitzana...the vegetarian dish I mentioned...very good, Carbonara, and interesting and tasty variation, Moussaka...this is the first time I've ever eaten this much loved dish without getting heartburn...a real winner, and Arni, classic braised lamb shank, with roasted winter vegetables and mashed...fork tender, and tasty as it should be. On the occasion of both visits, we finished with Orange Pie. Do it. You'll love it. Go ahead, you know you want to. No new restaurant is perfect, and Opa is still working through a small list of things, but in the end, this is what a great restaurant looks like in it's early days. Our food was excellent, service timely and effective, and the atmosphere was warm and cosseting. It will be fun watching this saga unroll, and see this smallish but excellent restaurant grow out of it's training wheels. I heard a couple of grumblings about pricing, but I can't see why. Pricing at Opa is decidedly moderate, and they confidently rely on sustaining numbers of guests to stay that way. Opa seems to know who they are, who their customers are, and we should all support this strong effort to improve our small town. Good job, Opa. Keep up the good work. read more

It was my friend Jennifer's idea to go to this restaurant. I usually like to give new places a few weeks to iron out their kinks so-to-speak, but I agreed to because I absolutely love Greek food!! We were greeted at the door by the owner, Sortirios Gudis, who had a smile on his face, "Welcome!" He says and seats us as far away from the door as possible. He gave us a tour of the menu and sets the mood for an excellent dining experience. Jennifer and I took Sortirios' advice of having the Sampler Platter and then we ordered two different appetizers and shared. I had the calamari and she ordered the spanikopita, and everything was exquisite. I am definitely going back again. All staff are beyond friendly, attentive, and professional. We tried the calamari - perfectly battered & fried, the cauliflower special - a lighter dish, bursting with flavor, the spanakopita - flakey, delish, and the tender, flavorful meatballs - just for starters! My father had the huge braised lamb, it literally fell clean off the bone and melted in his mouth! My mother had mousakka - a flavor explosion, my brother had the pastitsio - it was his second time ordering it - needless to say he loves it! I had the Carbonara w/grilled chicken added - creamy, flavorful comforting deliciousness! And Anna made my 5 yr old a plate of delicious chicken fingers & seasoned shoe-string fries. A true culinary oasis in the Covid desert. Food was unique and creative, fresh and quite flavorful. I think they use a lot of lemon there, typical Greek, and it really brightens up the food. Their eggplant offerings (one appetizer, one entree) were standouts. The dining room is spacious, it's not noisy, and the service was attentive and, what is unique these days, competent. A real pleasure, one of our best dining experiences this year. I think we'd be here weekly if we lived closer. read more

I'm from the Portland area where an exceptional restaurant and good food aren't hard to find. However I grew up in the Waterville area know a restaurant like Opa is what this town needs. Ambiance: almost there! A few simple touches would go a long way, small glass bottles of flowers on the table would be a nice touch- and candles, def need candles. Also there one wall that needs something- art, a mirror.. anything... and dim the lights near the bar at night- too bright! Food: I'm not holding Opa to Portland standards bc that wouldn't be fair. BUT! The spanakopita was great, and both of our entrees: we cleaned our plates. My husband was really looking forward to the lamb shank which apparently is only on the menu in the winter, but should be year round in our opinion. Again this is a great add for Waterville- nice to see something different for a change on good ol'Main Street. The Colby parents should eat this place up. read more

After 8 months living in Waterville I finally tried Opa. Was not disappointed. First I was pleasantly surprised by the decor and the overall vibe of the place, trendy, modern and super relaxed. Our server was really friendly. Service went as it should, water for the table first, then bread and olives and olive oil, drinks, came right away. We ordered several small plates to share, everything was delicious, nice portions. My favorite was the calamari. Interesting menu, great drinks menu and a specials board. This was our first time at Opa. We were a large party, so we were able to make a reservation. It was a busy Saturday night and it was fairly noisy in there. Sadly most place are theses days. We ordered a variety of appetizers and they were all generous enough portions that everyone in our party could try all of them. Everyone got a main meal and they were all excellent. I loved the fact that all dishes were veggie forward, with fresh veggies, not frozen. The plating was appealing to the eye ( and very photogenic!) we topped dinner off with coffee and dessert. The coffee was robust and the desserts light and fluffy. The waitstaff was attentive and quick to respond to requests. Everyone in our party had been to Greece so we definitely were excited when we had heard there was a Greek restaurant in the area. The food was spot on! My partner and I would be overjoyed if there were a restaurant in Waterville that had great ambience, a full bar with an actual bartender (i.e., not someone who has to Google anything more complicated than a vodka soda), and was consistent in terms of food and service. There is not yet a restaurant here that checks all of those boxes, but I am hopeful that someone--maybe Opa--can rise to the challenge. My first complaint happened before we even left the house and I hope is an easy fix for them: I called several times that afternoon (to ask if they had a full bar and if we needed a reservation) and could not get anyone to answer. Very annoying. There was no wait for our Saturday night visit, but I can see how space might be a problem on a busy night. There was a blast of air in the dining room every time someone opened the door; installing a second door to the sidewalk (and maybe an awning with a heat lamp?) might address both problems. We had the Scordalia as an appetizer, which was slow to come out, but good (it's basically mashed potatoes). For dinner, my partner had the Moussaka and I had the Pastitsio. The Moussaka was good, however, my entree was not hot when it arrived, and the pasta was pretty overcooked and bland. I won't order it again, but I'm optimistic about a number of other main courses. One final note: our server was very slow to clear our dirty dishes and glassware. As someone who worked restaurants for a number of years, I'd forgive this if he had been extremely busy, or if Opa were not advertising itself as "fine dining," but the restaurant was only half-full, and he walked away from the table with empty hands more than once. When the price point for entrees is in the $20+ range, the standards for quality of food AND quality of service go up. Management needs to properly train the waitstaff or replace them. Oh, also we would kill for fresh dolmas! Forgot to ask why they aren't on the menu. read more

My friend & I went yo Opas for supper last night. She had the lamb shank & I had the pan seared scallops, we sampled each others plates & both raved @ how delicious they both were. I had never had the Fregola Tagliatelle before & have a new dish I just love. Before the main course we tried the yogurt dip, delicious! & the potato/ garlic spread.( would not recommend,) basically cold mashed potatoes with garlic... Wear warm clothes as the door opens up to the outside& constantly cools the room down considerably, in spite of sitting next to the fireplace. read more
