In today's day and age of cultural homogeneity the ability to get som real local ethnic food is a luxury and also in some ways a human responsibility to ensure quality of food moving forward. I got a wonderful chicken gyro and my goodness was not disappointed by the presentation and kindness of the employee. It tasted even better as I had just just gone to a neighboring business and the owner complained about the government and spoke disparagingly about USAID. We had lunch today at the Kebab Den and found the service very friendly and fast. The two kebabs with rice and salad were tasty but spicy. If you like rice you won't be disappointed. Portions were generous. Of the two choices I would recommend the chicken over the beef. The salads were refreshing and freshly made. We eat in and found the restaurant cozy but small. I found the prices fair but the beef seemed expensive for what I got (the meat was ground not whole). Still worth a try if you're looking for something Mediterranean. read more

Kebab Den is nothing to write home about and I wouldn't recommend. Portions of kebab meat were puny, and just presented on a bed of rice. It was cubed meat, and not presented like falafel. A "salad" was presented along side--iceberg lettuce with tomatoes on one side of the take out container and cucumbers on the other. There was a sauce, but it was watered down salad dressing. There was no pita on the plate. The meat was bland and just wretched. I won't go back. read more

You can eat at one of a few rickety tables but it seems more set up for takeout Seemed like a one-man operation but he was friendly enough. Food was actually not bad and there are not many Mediterranean restaurants in Bangor so if you don't want to go all the way down to Ellsworth to Manny's you can get decent take-out at the Den. read more

This is an unassuming spot in Bangor that we stopped at during our stop on our way to Canada. It would have been easy to find except it was dark by the time we arrived so we missed the sign. There is parking on the side of the building and a sitting space outside. The food took about 10 minutes and was brought out as it was done so didn't come all at once but it was just the one dude so I appreciated that he wasn't going to let your food get cold. The chicken shawarma wrap was delicious, he uses Tzaiki sauce instead of Tahini sauce which was great for our group because our group can't have sesame due to allergies. Flavourful chicken and just enough freshness from salad in the warp.The regular cheeseburger was just ok, of note there was a sesame seed bun. The chicken shish kabab platter was also flavorful chicken on rice with good crunchy lettuce cucumber and tomatoes. The wings were the surprise as usually the Buffalo Sauce is not quite right or the wings aren't crispy after they've been douse with sauce. This was the sauciest yet simultaneously crispness Buffalo wings. Fries also perfect, skinny and crispy with just the faintest sprinkle of something. I'm from seattle and the gyro that I'm used to is very different that what I got from this place. The food was tasty but nothing to write home about. The interior was disheveled and it was so hot in there. We were going to eat there but decided it wasn't going to be a good experience. The food was a little bland but it was good. So to begin, the service was excellent, the food was good - but was it traditional Middle Eastern? Hmmm. I guess the restaurant did not specifically advertise being Middle Eastern, but "Kebab Den" with an oil lamp in the logo kind of hints to the expectation of Persian-influenced food. I ordered takeout - a chicken shawarma wrap, the kebab platter, an order of falafel, and the Indian Samosa. I did enjoy the food, but it was not typical of the cuisine. Th shawarma wrap was missing a crucial ingredient - the beautiful, garlicky shawarma sauce! (Also, the chicken was minced very small - normally, it is sliced into strips before it is marinated, and the thick, sweet lettuce leaves and sliced onions were absent - the mixture contained shredded carrots and cucumbers, but they seemed to be minced and sauteed with the chicken in a single pan, then wrapped) I was missing the sauce so much that I ended up making my own to eat it with. The kebab platter was decent - the little lambchop was cooked very well, and the chicken was tasty - though hardly spiced...it was all a little too mild in my opinion, but I am finding that up here in this part of the world, the food tends to be a bit bland in comparison to what I am used to. (I don't mean "heat" when I refer to spice, I mean flavor: like from mustard seeds, curry, chili, anise, cumin seeds, etc...) The salad was unusual - iceberg lettuce, cucumber, a slice of tomato - but covered in a sort of grainy tzatziki. Meh. I was expecting more a fattoush salad. The rice was great - I think I caught a hint of cardamom in it - which was nice. I wasn't a fan of the "gyro" meat - I think it was premade and then warmed from frozen. I liked the falafel - but again, I was surprised that there were no sauces served with them - normally, I am used to at least a tahini sauce as accompaniment. I eventually just dipped them into my homemade shawarma sauce. (I think that they were also frozen - they were shaped like perfect little cylinders, and they were a bit dry - but if you want falafel in Bangor, I guess they will do.) Lastly, I was surprised to see samosa on the menu at a Middle Eastern place - they were okay - but again - NO SAUCE (a tamarind or cilantro chutney would have been nice). The samosas were nicely fried, typical potato and pea filling - but, (I hate to say it again) - missing some subtlety, some aromatics. Overall, would I return? Yes. Would I call it "Traditional Middle Eastern"? Not really... It does not pack the aromatic/spiced punch of what I know to be this cuisine. (It's more of a Middle Eastern/Pakistani/American fusion) I did enjoy the wrap (though I might not call it shawarma) the lambchop, and the rice. (I'd order them again) ... I also noticed that they serve Indian/Pakistani breakfast - I might pop in for that one morning. Overall, a decent little joint for something different than pizza or burgers. read more

Very kind service, and yummy, fairly priced Middle Eastern influenced food! Keep in mind it's not perfectly "authentic" and I would prefer more usage of aromatics and traditional sauces. We came in here earlier and they had (I believe) just opened that day and were getting into the swing of things so we decided to come by later to see what it was all about! Today, we came here for lunch and I think this is our new favorite place for lunch. If you've ever been to Crown Fried Chicken, it's the same idea: Wonderful middle-eastern/central-asian 'fast food', some American-style fried stuff, and ice cream! What's not to love? I got the beef shawarma wrap with a side of rice and my wife got the chicken kabob with rice and salad! The rice was fragrant and delicious with whole spices in it (I counted saffron, black peppercorns, and cloves but I'm pretty sure there's cardamom in there too). The chicken kabob was charry on the outside and juicy on the inside, deliciously spiced and obviously fresh. The salad that came with my wife's food had a house-made dressing with yogurt and mint. My beef shawarma was literally the BEST shawarma I've had since I briefly lived in Austria and frequented Turkish Imbiss shops. The prices were really, really reasonable. Think 6.99 for a beef shawarma. The service was friendly and respectful without being too over-the-top, and they brought our food out to us after ordering. As a lesbian couple (one of whom is trans) I'm really happy about how we're treated here. Now that Kebab Den is in Bangor, I have one reason less to make trips to Portland. What a gem! Don't let the name fool you, they have a robust menu with something for everyone. Everything here is super tender and perfectly seasoned, especially the rice- I dont know what's in it but I could live on it. Also, their falafel is amazing, perfectly crispy outside without being dry inside or greasy. My favorite is the lamb kebab plate. All kebab plates come with a small side salad and bed of rice, generous portions of real food. The staff is always extraordinary and the resteraunt is clean and comfortable. An unassuming place with friendly staff and good food. We had the falafel and beef with rice and salad and it was generous portions. The only reason for the one star off is that I wish the food came with some condiment, maybe a sprinkle of salt and a drizzle of tahini or harissa. I was In Bangor unexpectedly about 1 month ago. I love middle Eastern food and it was right near by. I got the lamb kabob platter. It took a long time to get it even though I was the only customer at dinner time and it had less than half the pieces of lamb versus what I see in the pictures. It was also fairly dry. Loads of barely ok rice. The salad was uninteresting and you could barely tell that it was tzatziki dressing on it. I think it's more of Indian style rather than middle Eastern. Maybe other items and/or a different time with different staff would be better, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. read more

I unfortunately didn't take a photograph of the Kebab Den or my lamb kebab on rice with salad. I will say that it's hard to compare what i was served to anything i have eaten before. I found that the meat of which is all i ate with the exception of maybe five bites of rice and a single bite of salad was off putting! The texture was really tender which usually is a desired thing but if you tried out how so you would see why i say it was all around not good! With limited ability to truly give a description i will tell you that the outer meat/lamb kebab texture was like a crumbly type while inside was tender but overly to the point where i just don't know what he did but that it was bad tasting! In addition to make matters worse i did find a hair, likely from his beard in my rice which is why i did not eat it! I was charged a couple dollars more than the wall menu advertised price! Believe me this in no way is pick on the working guy as i do similar work and have compassion! On good conscience though i really would not recommend this place! It was dead when i went in for my first and last time, there was hardly any place to park! Maybe this is saying something in it's own right! read more
