Grabbing a bite to eat before a concert and the Bangor waterfront pavilion and our hosts chose this place for our dinner. Menu has traditional pub fare a well as some tasty Greek cuisine. Decor was sport pub like with TV screens scattered about for diners to watch. We were greeted with in minutes of sitting down. Drinks ordered then food. Pizza, a burger, and for me a Gyro, I can never over look one when offered. Bartender was great as was our server. Drinks flowed as did the food. I really enjoyed my gyro and hubby loved his burger. Funny how all the 5 star reviews are for the non-Greek food. I ordered a mixed grill and greek salad. I've had lots of mixed grills at different places, and this was an abomination. Nothing was seasoned, the chicken was barely grilled, and the steak was inedible and tasted gamey like lamb. Usually a tasty sauce can save mediocre meat, but the tzatziki tasted like plain yogurt. The rice you can see for yourself. Tasted like boil-in-bag rice with some soggy vegetables. I really am not a picky eater and was hungry for this but couldn't even finish. read more

This must of been an off night as my mom raves about this place. The waitress was phenomenal and this review has nothing to do with the service as it was perfect. She was attentive and even apologetic for the wait. The food on the other hand was over cooked. My other half got the spanakopita which was very toasted on the top and the spinach inside was dry. I got the chicken parm, the linguine was over cooked to mush and the chicken breading was burnt, also my chicken was not thin or pounded out so it was tough on top of being cooked way over necessary. The inside is quaint and not overly ornate. They had part of the dining room curtained off which i thought was a bit odd and sort of tacky looking. When we left we saw two people whom we assume were cooks or at least definitely BOH workers smoking and talking to which i figured is why our food was overdone. In the winter I always ask by the fireplace for ambiance. I also prepare to sit in that dining room. Their food is usually very good. They have pizza, burgers and Greek food. I love their fried clams when available. Service is excellent! read more

I usually only visit when meeting some friends that live close. They have decent draft beer specials and the food is usually good. It just doesn't have the big wow factor. My boyfriend and I dined at the Old Town Kostas location about two weeks ago on one of our first nice Spring days this year. We were really looking for somewhere to have lunch with outdoor seating. All of the restaurants in Bangor had waits so we called Kostas and they had plenty of outdoor seating. When we got there we were immediately seated out on the patio and our waitress promptly came to get out drink order. We both got a drink from the bar and a couple waters. Our water came out right away but our bar drinks took nearly 20 minutes to come out. We placed our order, we got an order of steak nachos for an appetizer, some boneless wings and a chicken wrap. Around the time we ordered it was just turning 2 pm and according to the menu brought to our table, happy hour was just starting. One of the specials listed on their menu is $4 tall domestic beer and directly under lists their domestic drafts as Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Miller Lite, and Sam Adams. My boyfriend decided to get a couple tall Sam Adams. Fast forward to getting our food, our appetizer took quite awhile to come out and our waitress kept apologizing for the delay. When the nachos finally came out, they were cold, cheese sauce was hard, and there were very few toppings thrown on top. We both agreed that it was not something we would order in the future. When our meals came out they were also less than impressive. Barely warm chicken tenders and a dry chicken wrap with a side salad that was missing 2 of the advertised toppings. Honestly, we're pretty easy going when we go out to eat so we didn't complain about the food, we just dealt with it. By the time we got the check, that's when our experience really went downhill. When our bill was given to us, I noticed that the beer did not get rung in at the happy hour price. When I brought this to the waitresses attention she mentioned that she was new and she would have to go run it by the manager- ok no problem. When she came back a few moments later she told us that "he said that we're not doing happy hour right now". I was a bit surprised at that response considering the menu clearly states when happy hour is. When we told her this and even pointed it out on the menu, she went back to the manager to inquire again. A few minutes later the manager himself came over. He rudely told us that it wasn't that they weren't doing happy hour, it's that Sam Adams is not included in that special. When we questioned him on this and pointed out the menu he basically told us that he didn't know what to tell us, that there are signs posted all over the inside of the restaurant about what's included (even though we were not sitting inside), he also laughed at us and told us that a $4 Sam Adams is unheard of. I am unsure if there really are signs clearly stating this or not inside, as we did not go inside. After a few times back and forth, he said that he would change the price this time but he would NEVER do it again. He acted as if it was some big favor that he was honoring their happy hour menu. He took off with our card and I checked my bank app within like 2 minutes of him walking away and the price was corrected. However, he didn't bring the card back over for a good 15 minutes. When he came to drop it off, he waited until our waitress was over talking with us and he was already turned around walking the other way by the time the card and receipts landed on the table. He was just so unprofessional with the way he handled the situation that it really blew my mind. We have really enjoyed him and his service in the past, but this experience left us never desiring to return to Kostas in the future. read more

I told my daughter I was craving for Mediterranean food and we end up to to this restaurant but to my surprise when I look up their menu I saw a lot of American foods,pasta and very few Mediterranean dishes so I was thinking this is an Americanized version of Mediterranean restaurant. There's not a lot of people on where we're seated but on the other side which is the bar are full of customers. We ordered potato nachos and mozzarella squares as a starter, it's like either a potato chips or sliced of fried potatoes with just some melted cheese tomatoes and bacon but the potatoes are barely covered with cheese and the mozzarella squares are served with marinara sauce (that's Italian by the way) My daughter had the mix grill which is okay,her partner got the Alfredo which is another Italian dish,my wife got the Greek chicken gyro and I had the lamb gyro both served with fries and cole slaw on pita bread.I say the lamb is so bland, fries is salty and slaw needs more dressing. On a Sunday evening, service was fine and our waitress was friendly and efficient. We longed for and missed not having calamari, apparently not available for years (seems like quite an omission for place offering Mediterranean cuisine). The setting could use a major makeover. The decor is very dark and what little there is of Greek memorabilia has clearly been there for decades. It looks tired. The food was plentiful, including the lamb in the gyros, though somewhat bland and over-dilled. The Greek sampler platter had nice skewered chicken and the spanakopita wasn't half-bad. Huge cherry tomatoes and oversize cuke slices could have benefitted from some slicing but we unhinged our jaws and popped them down the hatch. We certainly had no complaints about the portions and the veggies were fresh and crisp, though not particularly tasty, for reasons of being oversize. Pita bread was delicious, though it would have benefitted from hummus. More olives and more feta would have made the Greek salads, which came with the gyros, more Greek. My daughter enjoyed her fries and burger and generally we had a nice time. I just wouldn't call this place anything special. read more

Yet another superb dining experience at Kosta's. We were a fairly large party and Colby handled us with ease!!! He is very friendly and efficient-kept all of us happy. The food is SO good!!! Bacon wrapped teriyaki scallops, steak, gyros, pizza, lasagna-EVERYBODY was happy with their meals. The restaurant is nice and clean too-and beautiful!!! What a terrible experience at Kosta's. Got there about 11:45 only a few people sitting at the bar. We sat ourselves. Took a while to be acknowledged. Finally got menus. We asked for waters ordered appetizer. We waited well over 30 minutes and still nothing. Meanwhile a 2 top came in after us and were eating there food. We discussed leaving but I said I'd check. Walked back to ask and our food was being carry out. I said to the waiter you almost lost us. He yells why what happened. I said it took so long. He served the food and I brought up the 2 top had there food long before us. This waiter became very aggressive said we ordered different foods and ours had a long prep time. He went on and on near yelling at us. Never apologized. Neither of us could eat after we were so belittled. We had to walk out. Never again will we return. Don't waste your time go on up the road to Peppers Landing. It was excellent! Service and food!! read more

Our first time here, because we wanted something different. Our waitress, Dawn, was very nice. We ordered Spanakopata first and 2 lamb Gyros. Everything was delicious. The lamb was a little overcooked for my liking, but it was so good. The tzaziki sauce was yummy and full of flavor. We were too full from lunch to have dessert, so we took some baklava to go. My only disappointment with this Greek place, was that it was more American than anything else. The only other Greek item that I saw, was the Mousaka. We had a great time at Kosta's! Our waiter was friendly and the food was fantastic. We're from the Boston area and travel to Maine relatively often, so we will definitely be returning in the future. This place was very meh. We came out here looking for something a bit special and thought 'why don't we give Kostas' a try?'. The waitress was plenty nice but she seemed to be the only person holding down the fort, and I believe there was only one other table seated. We ordered calamari for a starter, and my partner ordered the souvlaki and I got the chicken gyro, which I was excited about since I hadn't tried a gyro from a 'real' Greek restaurant, just from pizza places. We ended up being pretty disappointed since Kostas' is not a 'real' Greek restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. The calamari were a mixture of actual squid rings and tiny battered octopus. They were out of whatever side the souvlaki was supposed to come with and so they gave my partner fries instead. The gyro was large but really bland and underseasoned- as if they just used your basic chicken breast instead of proper gyro meat. This place seems like another one of those restaurants old people go to during the daytime. The food was bland, uninspired and underwhelming and the space felt like a converted TGI Friday's. I wish there was a real Greek place in town, but this isn't it. read more

If possible, I would rate this restaurant in negative numbers! We stopped into Kostas in Old Town today for lunch. When we arrived and ordered coffee, the waitress said they didn't have any cream, but she could bring me milk. She then remembered they didn't have any milk either, so I reluctantly settled for black. When the coffee arrived in big white mugs, I noticed some splashes of coffee on the sides of the cups and assumed the waitress had spilled some of the coffee. However, upon closer inspection, I discovered the outsides of the cups were covered with coffee splatters and even had coffee drips from the rim that looked like someone had drunk from the cups. After getting the waitress' attention, I quietly told her that our coffee cups were dirty and pointed out the coffee drips and splatters. She responded with, "Oh. I know. The dishwasher is broken down, so we can't wash them, and we don't have any other cups." She did not offer to get us clean cups and seemed to think her explanation for the dirty cups was acceptable as she walked off. We canceled our orders and went elsewhere for lunch. read more

They sat us next to a large group on the left side by the fireplace. It was so loud we had to yell at each other to talk. The way the room is shaped the noise has no where to escape. They should have warned us and anyone else going in there about this since I'm sure it is a regular occurrence. We were hoping for a semi quiet evening and a good meal. I can't even rate the meal because we wolfed it down and got out of there as quick as we could. We weren't in there more than 40 minutes. What a waste of time and money. After complaining of this they never even offered to comp all or some of the meal. I don't know where the good reviews come from but I know we won't be back. read more

My wife and I took the family to Kosta's on Easter. We came away way too full of perfect food. My wife is about the pickiest eater on the planet and she called the meal "perfect". All seven of us had a delicious and perfectly prepared and presented entree. Zach was a very personable waiter with just enough personality and unobtrusive attention to detail. We were in town visiting family recently and had the opportunity to try Kosta's for dinner. While the menu is fairly standard, everything we tried was tasty and well executed by the kitchen so absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Prices are affordable to boot. But what makes this a five star review was the quality of the service we received. The bartender, Trisha, was running the back bar and dining room all by herself while we were there and she was slammed. Every seat in the place was full. Not once did she ever get rattled or lose the smile off her face. When she took our order, she was very patient with our questions and gladly took some special requests such as my wife asking to double up on veggies with her broiled haddock in lieu of fries or rice (Sure! No problem...) or me asking for a thinner crust for my Greek pizza after she explained that the pizza crust tends to be a bit thick. I hate to be fussy but I cannot stand thick crust pizza. She pleasantly offered to have the kitchen make it thinner for me. Carbo-kid had the Fettuccine Alfredo and loved it although she could not finish it. The portion was huge. What really topped the experience was the very generous pouring hand of my now favorite bartender. Holy smokes do you get your money's worth when it comes to mixed drinks and wine. No skimping here folks. I was so impressed that I have now reconsidered my retirement plans. I can now envision me sitting on the corner stool at Kosta's (probably resembling Norm from the TV show Cheers by that point), maximizing my meager social security stipend by getting economically loaded with the help of Trisha's pouring skills. I don't know why anyone would go to a certain chain restaurant in Bangor that serves mediocre pasta after having the HEAVENLY Chicken Parmesan or other selections of delicious pastas and entrees such as Chicken Marsala at Kosta's. They have delicious deserts that are fresh not frozen. They have an awesome drink menu and a lively bar. I consistently get takeout for my lunch from their insanely inexpensive lunch menu. Do yourself a favor and have one of their sandwiched on their homemade "wheel" I will miss this place when I move but, i'll be back when I visit! read more

Kosta's is a great Greek fusion place that has a nice atmosphere, decent lightning, and a pretty upscale feel to it. Walking in to the establishment I was greeted with the lovely blend of 30s and 40somethings enjoying a few drinks and a lovely meal. There is something for everyone here. There are quintessential Greek dishes that you would expect to find, plus evening specials that fuse your typical steak and potatoes with a Greek flair. The service was perfect (not to mention very attractive.) Our server was funny, and engaging when we wanted him to be. He certainly didn't rush us out the door; we ended up staying there for the better part of two hours. The price scheme was acceptable, and the wine list was diverse and also priced very well. Kosta's serves greek dishes that have been popularized in american culture like gyros or typical american fare with some greek twist like salad with a feta cheese dressing. There is a full bar with stool seating available and a large flat screen there where you can sit and have a few drinks and watch a game or chat, as well as a dining area with tables. The food is quite decent and the decor pleasant. Nothing wildly exciting, but quite a nice place to spend an evening. Please note: The restaurant does offer takeout: Call ahead and you can pick up your order at the bar. I've never seen Kosta's very crowded but there are always at least a few people enjoying a drink at the bar. Getting to Kosta's can be a tad tricky as the street there doesn't allow left turns into the parking lot, so you will have to drive past it and then turn around and go back if you are coming to it from the other side of the street. Also, when you leave, the only option is to turn right, towards Ellsworth, so if you are trying to head back towards the river or Bangor, you will have to do the same kind of turn around operation in reverse. read more

Kosta's is hit or miss. Sometimes when we go there the food is excellent, and the service spectacular. Other time when I've gone there the service is mediocre at best, though the food is still solid. Overall, the food is pretty good, so if you don't care much whether the service is stellar or not, it's a safe bet, I've never had any real complaints about the food. If you care about service quality, it's a hit or miss chance, you may be better searching elsewhere. Ergo, my 3 star rating, because the food has consistently been 3-4 stars, but the service is anywhere from a 2 to a 5 (usually lower, sadly). read more

I had time to kill while waiting to do a Moxie book stop in Orono. I'm not a mid-afternoon, stop at the local bar kind of guy, but Bangor/Brewer in the middle of a January arctic blast is pretty unforgiving. It was a a beer, or walking around the mall. I've done the mall before and I'd rather not do that again if I can help it. The weekday happy hour runs from 2-5 and it seemed like a haunt for regulars. Friendly crowd and very attentive bartender. This place was great. About 3 years ago. It's showing it's age and lack of up keep. The bar entry, bathrooms and floors are dingy. It looks dirty, so it makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like.
