Driving back toward home from Katahdin today we were deciding on where to eat for what we call lunch-upper... Past lunch, almost supper time. Decided on Happy Thai in Old Town. What a treat! Watched OT regulars and tourists with a window view of Main St. As soon as we ordered the restaurant began to pop! Online orders, people streaming in for dinner and to pick up their orders. Started with Thai iced teas, chicken satay, crispy avocados. Then on to the main events: spicy Thai noodle soup and a Thai Chow Mien. Service was excellent; all dishes were superb. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful Thai restaurant! The hostess is gracious and welcoming and happily describes an item if we ask about it. The food is amazing! We keep trying new things and marvel at the deliciousness. Today we shared "Chive Cakes"--an authentic appetizer. I was thinking they'd be like scallion pancakes but these were entirely different. They were cut in thick wedges, steamed first then given a quick fry. They arrived sizzling hot and were crispy & crunchy on the outside while soft and creamy on the inside and just loaded with tasty green chives. The traditional dipping sauce--a bit salty, savoury, and slightly sweet--was a perfect companion to the crunchy, creamy wedges. There were 8 of these delicacies and I could have scarfed down each and every one of them myself, but I had to share, alas. I can't seem to get enough of Happy Thai's coconut soup, either. The broth is light and flavorful with just a hint of heat--I ask for mild, but you can ask to have it as hot as you'd like. My companion enjoyed his plate of Drunken Noodles today as well. We've also tried Green Curry and Pad Thai, always with tofu as the chef cooks it so succulently. The restaurant is just a small place on a corner in Old Town, Maine, overlooking the Penobscot River. Very friendly staff. Great food, excellent service. The Thom Kha soup was sweet and spicy and loaded with chicken and vegetables. The Pad Woon Sen with chicken was perfect, very flavorful and not spicy at all. My husband had the red curry with pork and tofu and ate every bite, he said it was some of the best he's ever had. His Pad Thai was great as well. We had plenty of leftovers to enjoy when we left. Portion sizes are not huge, but are large enough that you will probably have leftovers. Really appreciated the friendly service and recommendations were good. I like good with some kick to it but I would tell you the "medium" spice is probably a little closer to the "hot" side of things so be prepared. I had the drunken noodles and wife had the pad Thai. I was asked to lunch by a friend who had been there several times before and raved about it. I, of course, checked out the Yelp reviews. Although there were only 2 reviews, they were both 5 stars, so I gave it a chance. I'm so glad I did. The first thing I noticed was how clean it was. I mean super clean. It even smelled clean. Not like perfume or chemicals....just clean. When I sat down, my friend commented on how clean the water glasses were, so I looked closer and couldn't find a speck of anything. Not even a water stain. The glasses actually sparkled. That may not be a big deal to some people, but it's a huge deal to me. The server came over and welcomed me with a big smile and poured some ginger tea in my very, clean, cup. Apparently, he makes it fresh every morning. It was delicious. We drank the whole pot and asked for more. The atmosphere was very pleasant and comfortable. Our server's name was Jack and he and his wife own the restaurant and she does all the cooking. I started with the Crab Rangoon. It was so yummy. My friend had the veggie rolls. Those were fantastic also. Then I got the yellow chicken curry. This is a spicy dish, but I asked for it to be mild and it was perfection. I would like to tell you what my friend ordered, but I was too busy devouring everything they put in front of me to notice. Happy Thai Cuisine appears to be very clean and has a cozy small inside dining area. It is nice to have this addition to the limited food scene in Old Town. The owner Jack is very pleasant and welcomed us to his establishment he owns with his wife, the cook. Unfortunately there is no lunch menu or lunch pricing. Meals are one price for either lunch or dinner. My husband and I ordered two dishes, one was vegetables and tofu, the second one was Pad Thai with chicken. I was disappointed with the vegetables and tofu as it was served with a runny thin watery sauce and the dish was not flavorful. The vegetables were fair at best, a few pieces of broccoli, few quarter portioned button mushrooms, food service sliced carrots, sliced celery, few halved rounds of sliced zucchini, and several pieces of cabbage leaves. No onions even though listed on menu as one of the ingredients. My husband's Pad Thai w/chicken was ordinary, nothing remarkable. overall the meals are quite pricey for the portion sizes and and lack of great flavor. Our lunch with no appetizers, no alcohol, no beverages or tea was approximately $40. with tip (for the owner who served us). We will not be back, too pricey for lunch.
