Happy China has been a good spot to stop for me so far, get in the buffet and enjoy the options. Lots of Sushi items, plenty of vegetarian or pescatarian options, quick and easy. Having our annual Kick off to school vacation with our grandson. We decided on Chinese and he had not been to a buffet like this. The signage for the road was clear and there was no issue with parking plenty of. The entrance is double door with a frequent flow of people. We were on line as soon as we went through the second door, but were seated with in minutes. They have a charming bridge type entrance with fish and water fixtures on both sides of. Loved this touch! The tables were rather close together but enough room at our end table for my rather tall husband with long legs. We took our coats off, and a pleasant young h woman asks what we would like for drinks, water all around and one hot tea. Then we were free to go explore. This was organized with some confusion, as apps can be found among entrees and the steamed items were at one station away from items usually found with. After a few trips wandering around, I eventually got a map of. I enjoy peel and eat shrimp and these were good. The sushi area was well stocked with rolls but singular pieces were lacking. Not an issue for me as I can see the chef is preparing. The ginger was a pretty pink which was not appealing as it is known as a white flesh tuber. Fresh and delicious! Then I went for a free fall and dabbled in a few entrees and steamed white rice, which I did not see, as it was not marked. Happened to see someone else using. Some of the entrees were lukewarm to warm and possibly should be checked temperature wise more frequently. Our bellies just about full it was time for dessert. My grandson was in awe that you could choose more then one AND have seconds in the ice cream. Made our hearts happy. The price was very reasonable and staff were all friendly and helpful. My husband and I question why this establishment was only three stars??? People were coming and going the whole time we were there for take-out, or to mention the almost full dining rooms. As close as the tables were we met we felt on top of so they managed the space well. My reason for not giving a 5 star rating would be because we did return our second night as requested by our grandson! This time we were sat at a very awkward table towards the front. Honestly, they should loose it all together, just because you can doesn't mean that you should. The table didn't fit right nor was it balanced. We were all squished into this table and as I mentioned earlier, my husband is 6'6 and had no place to put his feet but in the eislle! I am rolling my eyes! Can't they see this and they put us at the smallest table in the place. Try entrees were a little better, some items were lukewarm and a few hot. Oh and the wanton soup actually has wanting which it did not the evening before. All in all we will be back. It's our grandsons favorite place now. read more

Since it has been over a year since I wrote about Happy Garden, and we very recently went back there I thought I would do a quick update. The short version is that I still like it and will keep going back, especially since there are so few Chinese buffets around. I filled one plate and then a partial one for a second trip. The dessert items are a little weak as they often are at these buffets, but the apple pie is tolerable and I found out recently that their soft serve ice cream is better than some I have had from that type of dispensing machine. It makes for an expensive meal, even at the lunch price, but it allows me to surf all of the selections rather than trying to find a lunch combo with just three or four items I like in it. We just think of it as a treat every few months or so. The people have always been friendly also. read more

This place was so disgusting I left still hungry because I had to spit it all into my napkin. I certainly know buffets aren't 5 star restaurants but everything was gross even the soft serve ice cream. The service was HORRIBLE. No napkins, no drink refills, was only there about 20 minutes and a random waitress slapped the bill on the table. Then leaving to pay while waiting in line another RUDE customer skips in front and the cashier still took his payment first. She took my card threw it down and threw the receipt down as well. Overall, I don't understand the negative reviews - Happy China has been a consistently good buffet. Prices have gotten higher over the years, but whose haven't? I can always find all of the items I hope to have on the buffet and they are good! Sometimes it takes a little bit longer for replacement trays to come out if emptied, but nothing excessive. If you need a drink refill staff arrive pretty quickly. Of course I've had items I didn't love, but far more often I genuinely enjoy everything on my plate. I would definitely recommend Happy China! read more

I like this place. The majority of the food is very good - the rangoons are to die for, the green beans and veggie dishes are excellent. They also have some Dimsum, always fresh and steamy, as well as many meat and seafood dishes. The sushi is ok - not amazing, but this is a Chinese Buffet - not a Japanese Sushi Bar. The "American" section is good - though the LAST thing I want at a Chinese buffet. It's good if you have bland, picky eaters in your party I suppose. Happy China did not make me happy as it ended up making me very unhappy. Went there last Thursday and I always get take out, masked lady at front desk not so nice, I say take out she points to take out container and says you get it yourself..yeah Ok. Loaded up the container I had not eaten all day, went to counter to not so nice masked lady snd asked do you have soda...she points over her shoulder and says ..you get it yourself...then yells out to one of her minions and yells something in chinese to her and up comes my warm pepsi. then masked lady says put food on scale... I pay and go into the parking lot and open my container and the food is cold, pepsi warm - food cold. Against my better judgement I ate the cold greasy chinese buffet. 24 hours later I am bedridden with a fever and sharp pains in my abdomen, severe body aches and weakness. My advice to anyone that goes out to eat...never...never ...never eat cold Chinese food as you risk having the same experience as I did. After that everything was just so so. I get some times the chef is off on a dish or two but most of this buffet was bland or not great. Wanted to support local business during the pandemic. I was in the area and called to order 2 lunches and a large chicken lo mein to go . Once I got to the restaurant I found out that their Buffett is open for dining. The tables are 6 ft apart and there is a waiter asking you what you would like to eat going down the different dishes. All the food dishes have a plastic barrier . Waiter plates for you and you go to your assigned table. I wanted a take out of appetizers from the Buffett . Got about 2 lbs worth. I was disappointed with the fried chicken wings at the Buffett . It was dried and not fresh. All the app at the Buffett was warm and not hot as I would have wanted. My lunch to made order was fresher and my choice of chicken broccoli was good. The broccoli was cooked perfectly with a crunch to it. My take at the present time is to order from the menu instead of take out from the Buffett unless you are dining in. read more

Bangor area used to have six Chinese buffets running; Franklin St., Asian Palace original, Washington Plaza, Brewer, Oriental Jade, and Happy China. Used to have to compete. Not anymore. Only Happy China is left in the game. So you either get what they slop out or you don't get Chinese buffet. Poor quality food, price never stops growing. Just giving up on Happy China. read more

We were staying at Bangor, ME while we were visiting Acadia National Park. Looking a place to have our dinner and picked this place out of convenience at located very near to our hotel. A Chinese restaurant offering buffet at least for dinner seems to be quite popular with the local residents. We got their towards the end of their dinner service. Good interior as expected. Really really wide selection of options (at least 30 if not more) to pick from. Food is good, could be better. Given all other options, the most reasonable place to dine if you are looking for something other than Maine's seafood. read more

As a Chinese... I think its Japanese sushi is better than the traditional Chinese food. Not kidding. I get there about 9 p.m. which is close to shut. But the place is still clean and comfortable (which is different from and better than other Chinese even Asian restaurants). The services here is action-oriented, and the dishes are definitely cost-effective. By the way, my friend says here is better than Panda Garden on the 123 Franklin Street. read more

I stopped in with my teenage girls to eat while in Bangor and I wish we hadn't. I haven't been feeling well and my body is definitely angry about something I ate. It could very well be that my body just isn't used to so much greasy stuff, or it could be food poisoning. Some of the things I ate tasted sufficiently off enough to leave it up to question. We ordered our food from the GrubHub app. It came late, which was GrubHub's fault. We finally got our food and it was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. We used to eat here quite often when we would go out, but things have changed quite a bit. The crab Rangoons were awful, must have been a new recipe, the steak teriyaki was a thick tough steak on a stick, the boneless spareribs were FULL OF FAT, and chicken fingers had gristle and were so mushy. The only thing that was good was the rice. Grub Hub canceled our order, but the driver still brought it to us because he had picked it up before it got canceled....so we got it for free, but tipped the driver a $20 for going out of his way....even that was too much to pay for this meal. 1 star is a generous rating. The last couple times I had been in with my family or my wife (about a year ago) it seemed as if the food had gone downhill and changed a bit (recipes, etc.). We started getting our Chinese from Oriental Jade or China Light. Oriental Jade was a bit pricey, but VERY GOOD. China Light was perfect price wise and taste wise, plus they delivered their own food. So we stick with them for a long time. They just recently went out of business and we needed a new GO-TO for Chinese food....thought we would order out, since Grub Hub added Happy China Buffet to their app for delivery....NEVER AGAIN! How can I sing its praises? -Legitimately good sushi -Tasty clams of the hollandaise and spicy bean persuasions, crayfish, crab legs, and stir-fried octopus if you go for dinner -Dim sum with all kinds of tasty dumplings -Happy hour for drinks (I always get Long Island iced tea) It's almost always slamming when I go in and the food is always fresh. The one drawback is the clientele- think scary parents with 90s fashion yelling at their tiny children in ways nobody never have to experience, or dudes with shaved heads complaining about "people who don't speak English". DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE A NUT ALLERGY I came to this restaurant with a friend, and we asked staff there what oil they cook their food in. The woman we were speaking to seemed really confused, but she said vegetable oil. Overall that in itself was pretty unsettling, since she didn't seem to know. I made the mistake of still eating some food anyway (still checking food labels at the buffet like crazy) and found some food that was not near any nuts, and did not include any in the food itself. Within 10 minutes of eating, I broke out into hives. Had the restaurant staff been more knowledgeable of what's in their food, I would be more forgiving, but I'm very unhappy both with their communication and competency.
