Today, I called OnPoint Community Credit Union. I told them that I don't physically have my SS card because it's being mailed to me and asked if I could open an account at the bank without it. I was told I had to go to the branch and ask them. I went to the Fred Meyer branch, where I was told by the front desk employee that it's ok because I had the SS number. He entered it into the system and told me I could open an account today.
I waited for more than 20 minutes, and then an employee named Amanda also told me I could open an account. So, I gave her my passport, international driver license, my SS number, and the paperwork that SS issued to me. She then said that she had to check with her manager.
I could see them through the window. They were flipping through all the pages in my passport. After 30 minutes, they came back, and the manager said that I had to physically have the SS card to open an account. I told them that his employees said I don't need it!!
He said that as a branch manager, he could do exceptions for foreign passport holders, but he won't do it for me!!! I was shocked and speechless at the way he told me to my face that he could help me, but he won't just because I'm from the Middle East or that I'm Muslim ??
Otherwise, who would say that and why you bring it up if you don't have the intention to do it for me?
I entered the country LEGALLY and in the past month that I lived in America, it was my first bad experience. So, thanks OnPoint Community Credit Union for wasting 2 hours of my time and the racial discrimination. read more
