Go somewhere else. I REPEAT, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE…read more I can only think of two reviews that I have ever posted that have been negative. One was an extremely dirty sushi restaurant and another was a shady used car dealership. It's a bummer, but here in number three. I have been with Allstate since 1985 and with Rich Ruhl Insurance since he took over the Eugene office in the early 90's. For many years, I felt that I received good service. His staff has always been super friendly and it seemed like they tried to figure out ways to save me money. As time passed, my wife and I moved to Portland and accumulated a few additional rental properties along with the usual cars, boats, motorcycles, RV's, and at the same time always maintained an umbrella policy. I felt that the number of policies I carried with him helped a bit as to my level of service. However, in the past four or five years, I've started to sense that Rich and the folks in the office were not always telling me everything I needed to know or what else I could do to save a dollar or two. I also sensed that the office was growing rapidly causing them to rush and not pay attention to detail. It seemed like I had to keep asking more and more questions to get answers and I started to feel like I was not getting a complete answer. I come to find out that I wasn't. I have several examples, but two of the glaring ones are: 1) Insurance Scores: This one is HUGE. Each and EVERY TIME that I spoke to Rich or his staff, I would ask them if there is anything else that we can do to save a little. Almost always, the answer was "No, everything looks good." After speaking with two other Allstate agents in two different offices, I come to find out that Rich's office had not checked my insurance score in over 10 years. As someone who does not understand the nuances of insurance, I had no idea that this was something they should do nor did I understand its significant. With one click of a button (and a little processing time), my new Allstate agent lowered my car insurance by $344 a year. Let me repeat that, I SAVED $344 a year. That is huge in my book. I also found out that there is no harm/no foul when they re-check it. That is, even if your insurance score goes down it won't effect the rate. So essentially there is no reason not to periodically check it. But here is the real problem. When I mentioned this to Rich, he first stated, among other things, that updating these is just something he wouldn't normally think of doing. He actually said that several times during our conversation. Later in the day, after he realized that I had done my research and that he shouldn't have said that, he back paddled and shot me an email stating that not only is checking insurance scores one of the top three ways to save money but that his staff had mentioned it to me but I had refused to have it done. Wow. That blew me away. He tried to blame me, the client. Great example of good customer service. He had just admitted to me on the phone (which of course he will now deny) that re-checking the score is something "I wouldn't normally bring up." And in fact, he didn't during the many conversations I've had with him. And if you think about it, it makes no sense whatsoever. Why in the world would I or any client for that matter, if given all the facts, refuse to have a score updated if it would not harm them regardless of the result. His usual response that "everything looks fine" shows, at the very least, a complete lack of care for one of his first and oldest clients, and at the worst, seriously questionable insurance practices. Here is info on the importance of insurance scores. http://www.insurancescored.com/ 2) Homeowner/Rental Deductibles: Because of the insurance score issue, I started to do some online research I quickly discovered that, unless you are really cash strapped, most agents will recommend $1,000 home and rental deductible, not $500. This is because it is not recommended to make a claim for less than that amount. When I spoke to other agents with other companies, without exception, they all agreed. Rich had one of my properties at $1000 but had two other ones at $500. Now I suppose that you could say that this was my fault because I didn't notice the discrepancies. But even If I had, I wouldn't have understood that $500 was too low for me. Isn't that why we have agents . . . to notice these differences and then talk to their clients about them? Here is some info on deductibles and other ways to save money. https://publications.usa.gov/epublications/12ways/12ways.htm Bottom line, I saved approximately $411 a year by switching Allstate agents, not companies, BUT AGENTS. He just can't be trusted when it comes to making sure you're getting exactly what you need and at the best rates. If you'd like more detail, feel free to message me on FB with your phone number and I'll be happy to get back to you. John Poulson, Portland
