Really torn with this one....Is it bad if you liked the Rice and the Mac Salad better than the BBQ?!?! The meat is absolutely the cheapest possible cut they could find! I tried 4 different types of meat and without a doubt ALL were the most fatty, grisly meat available! The torn part is that it tastes really good! The marinades and sauces, to drizzle on the meat, are amazing, but the meat is WAY rough!! After I was done eating the part without the gristle, I had probably half as much inedible leftovers going in the trash!!! The only thing that was good, all the way through, was the Katsu Chicken. I would get this 10 times over the rest of the meat they sell! Moist, well breaded and a perfect sauce to dip it in!! Which is the only reason I gave this review 2 stars instead of one! I've been to Hawaii many times and never had such POOR quality BBQ! People must really enjoy gnawing on their food because this place somehow has 4 stars! Most of the complaints are about the service, which I thought was really good both times I've gone to this location. Everyone greets with a smile, seems truly happy to help you and we're really quick at getting my food out!!! Building was mostly clean, but the tables seemed a little sticky. Thought I was eating at Denny's again! Yikes!!! Anyway, all and all I left full, but it was because of the sides not the BBQ! For the high cost, I expected it to be better quality! I've always had a great dish at Ono Hawaiian BBQ. Well.... Definitely not today and last time. Today, I ordered Island Fire Chicken plate and was completely grossed out from the partially raw, partially burned, stringy, fatty, chewy chicken. Thought it was just here and there, just to be proven wrong by pulling cartilage and ligaments out of my mouth with every bite. Dissected one of the pieces of chicken to just find it still slimy and pink meat in the middle. That was absolutely disgusting! Needless to say, I couldn't eat another bite and the entire meal went in the trash. Last visit, chicken was undercooked as well, but I was able to zap it in the microwave and eat some of it. I am a fan of this chain restaurant called Ono Hawaiian Bbq. It is not often that we find ourselves in this side of town. Happened a couple of weeks ago that we were, and Wifey chose Ono Hawaiian Bbq for us to dine. We parked in the back, and made our way into the restaurant. Fortunately, we beat the dinner rush. Waited about 15 minutes for our Mini Meals. She ordered the Grilled Chicken Breast (I believe). I ordered the Chicken Katsu. We shared the Spam Musubi. Everything was tasty. Prices were fair. This was my first time trying ono. I love Hawaiian food so I'm not sure why I kept putting this place off until now. I got the chicken Katsu. The portions are really big. It came with 2 scoops of white rice, Mac salad, and the crispy chicken on a bed a soft cabbage. Over all satisfied the craving. When I got home I added furikake to my rice because that's the only way I eat white rice. The rice honestly really balances out how rich the Mac salad is. I liked the Mac salad but it was very rich with a dominant onion flavor. Almost too onion-y. None the less, still a good Mac salad. The chicken is really plain on its own but I dipped it in their Katsu sauce and that sauce is so bomb. So definitely try their sauces! They also had a teriyaki sauce too available. They have a little condiment bar with soy sauce, hot sauce, and hot mustard as well. I want to come back to try the spam masubi and other items. A great addition to east Bakersfield I would say! We tried the Fanta, Sprite and Barqs root beer and all tasted flat and like it was made with bad tap water. $6 for these spam Musubis is definitely overpriced. I have been here quite a few times now and I'm really happy that Bakersfield finally has a Hawaiian BBQ spot. Every time I have visited this place, there's always a line; however, the line always moves pretty quickly. They have tons of hard working people here and food always cooks quickly because they have quite a bit of people cooking in the back. I even went during their grand opening and we waited less than 15min. You can definitely see the team work and I love that. Staff is always professional and helpful. I'm a big fan of their kalbi beef. I like all their other meats. They are seasoned well and all have good flavor, but my favorite has to be the kalbi beef. They give huge portions of food here, so depending how hungry I am, it usually lasts me about 2 to 3 days to eat. read more

I was disappointed to find out this is kind of like fast food joint serving Semi-Hawaiian dishes. I ordered several selection to try: Inland White Fish, BBQ Chicken and Fresh Mix Salad (with BBQ Beef). My beverage was Fresh Young Coconut. It took about 15-min to prepare my food on a crowded Friday night. The salad was prepared with lettuce, cabbage, carrot and onion. The nice touch was the edamame, toasted black sesame seeds and BBQ beef as the protein option. The house dressing was unique and kind of like ginger sesame wasabi flavor, which was really good. The beef was little bit tough to chew, but the flavoring was great. The BBQ Chicken (5-star item) was the best choice preparing with a well-balanced sauce and tender dark meat. The white fish filets were heavily breaded with Japanese Pablo bread crumbs, which I would prefer that they grill the fish to bring out the true flavor. Both fish and chicken were served on top of cabbage, which was a great way to keep them fresh and tasty. My best choice was the young coconut. There is nothing better than drinking fresh coconut water with a straw. I actually got a spoon to scrape out all the coconut meat. There are ways to make this restaurant a great place if they put more thought into the food preparation, since all the ingredients were fresh. read more

Let me just tell you if you want plain rice you might as well as go ahead and ask to get it to separate container otherwise they will just literally throw it all together in a container and hand it off. I'm assuming the upper management has dealt with this before because the last time I went in some sort of manager or higher power was lecturing the staff in front of all of the customers.
