The food from Oni Maki was more mid for me. The A5 Wagyu hand roll had really good steak but way too much rice. The onigiri tasted good but same issue, too much rice and not enough salmon (lowkey like Japan 7/11 better). The uni hand roll just wasn't for me. Vibes were cool though. I liked the projection on the wall showing how to fold hand rolls and onigiri, it reminded me of Japan.

I came here since I was walking about the area and kept seeing it on social media. I ordered the mango sticky rice drink to share with my husband. They definitely have some special/unique drinks you do not see at other places which attracted me to give it a chance. I thought the drink was overall OK. It didn't really taste like mango sticky rice to me, but maybe I had super high expectations after seeing a ton of my friends coming here to try it out when they first opened. The matcha was decent. Overall, it was more like a mango matcha to me. The sticky rice part tasting was a bit too subtle. If you drink it section by section then you'll taste the flavors but if you were to mix it then it's just a mango matcha in my opinion. Not sure if I'll come back to try other drinks or rice balls.

Delicious strawberry matcha and handroll! Servers are friendly even though it's so busy. Not a lot of seating & takes awhile to get the order but they have a ton of options and I will definitely go back to try other matcha flavors of matcha and handrolls!

I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and it was busy!!! They have a lot of yummy flavors, we went with the strawberry and black sesame matchas. Both were delicious and exactly what you want. The space is big yet minimal seating. It was a very long wait, over 20 minutes.

I had been dying to try the Sticky Mango Rice Matcha from Oni Maki because it kept showing up everywhere, so during my visit to Chicago it was literally the first place I went to. What surprised me the most is that it's not just about one viral drink. Every single matcha I tried was incredible. They use 100% ceremonial grade matcha, and you can actually see multiple staff members hand whisking it fresh to order. The flavor is bold, vibrant, and beautifully green with a clean, balanced taste. I tried the Sticky Mango Rice Matcha, the raspberry matcha, and the chai matcha, which has a stronger, slightly smoky flavor. I also love that you can choose your preferred milk and customize the sweetness level. And it's not just a matcha bar. They also serve sushi, hand rolls, and onigiri. I ordered several onigiri, including wagyu steak, spicy pork, salmon, and tuna mayo. Everything was amazing. I especially love how they prepare it so the nori stays completely fresh and crisp, and you basically assemble it yourself right before eating. Even though the place was packed, the service was super fast and friendly. They also sell Asian chips and snacks if you want to grab something extra to go. 10 out of 10. If you're visiting Chicago and you love matcha or sushi, you absolutely have to try this spot. I would go back a thousand times.

I came here for the Matcha Bar but also tried the maki. It was a little confusing that the board had a bunch of maki options but when I went to order they said that I have to order from what's in the display case. Maybe they ran out that day or maybe they only do certain maki every day, unsure. The maki comes wrapped in plastic similar to the way onigiri is in stores where the seaweed is separated from the rice to prevent it from going soggy, though that means you're gonna have to touch the roll. Nevertheless, the rolls I got were good and I have no real complaints about them, but they weren't blow me out of the water good either, which I didn't expect or need them to be. The matcha options were great and I think the main draw for most people at the store. The customers were more or less all UIC students on a Wednesday at 5PM. I waited in line for maybe 3-5 minutes max and then 10-15 mins for my drink to be made. I got the mango sticky rice matcha which is always my go to for matcha lattes if it's on a menu. It definitely gave mango sticky rice! Many places that offer the same drink kind of just taste like a mango matcha, which is missing the distinct starchy flavor of the rice. This hit it on the head perfectly for me. The match itself was good but not very strong. Not very grassy or matcha forward, but it was definitely pleasant and present. I'd come here again if I were in the area. The store is nice and big and had a chill but comfortable vibe.

They were out of some rolls by the time we got there, but what we had was decent! They could have used a liiittle more filling in some of the rolls with protein. The matcha was good! Service was okay. The restaurant itself is cute! Only some seating options, but lots of snacks and drink options as well.

They have a matcha bar inside called The Matcha Bar @KURIMU and I can't say enough about it. Best matcha lattes in Chicago by far, the quality is just unmatched. I've been waiting a long time for a place like this to hit the Chicago scene and it was well worth the wait. They also have delicious and fresh hand rolls, onigiri, and sides.

The best matcha I've ever had in my life. Strawberry matcha is the perfect sweetness with fresh strawberry puree.

I could hear the sizzling from the grill, smell the food cooking, and by that point I was more than ready to eat. Our server was really nice and gave us a bunch of recommendations. Everything sounded good, but I ended up going with the Pork Belly Yakisoba. This dish was packed with flavor. The noodles had that smoky, slightly charred taste, and they were coated in just enough sauce to make every bite rich. The sauce brought a nice balance of savory, a little sweetness, and plenty of umami that soaked into the noodles. The pork belly was easily the best part. It was incredibly tender and juicy, with just enough fat that it practically melted in your mouth. Every piece had those caramelized edges that added even more flavor. Then you get the crunch from the cabbage and bean sprouts, the freshness from the scallions, and the little nutty flavor from the sesame that tied everything together. Hahaha I'd definitely come back. This is one of those dishes that sticked with me long after I left.

I got the pork okonomiyaki lunch set and added a fried egg to it. I like that the table has a built in grill to keep it warm (I'm a slow eater, so this is extra beneficial for me). The bacon was quite salty, compounded by the okonomi sauce. Hoping the kombu vegetables would offset this, I mixed them into each bite to no avail. The pandan coconut mochi donut holes I chose were probably the highlight. They were crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and there was ample sauce for dipping. I think some people would find the service top notch here--constantly checking in on me and keeping water refilled. I guess that came with a cost: 3% service charge automatically applied, and the server proactively brought over a digital payment system, so the 18% tip I selected calculated off the total leading to what was essentially a tip of 23%.

Candidly it wasn't on my to-do, but the restaurant happened to be on my route back to my hotel and I hadn't had dinner yet. I walked into the restaurant, and there was a spot open right at the bar waiting for me. I think it was meant to be. Loved the vibe of the restaurant, which was casual but trendy. Best part of all was the music. My ears perked up when I heard Hieroglyphics - The Who... A Plus Remix. Instantly felt "at home" with the underground, old school hip hop. Compliments to their curated Pandora playlist. I ordered the the spicy scallop roll, super san roll, and sawara (Spanish mackerel) nigiri. The spicy scallop roll was my favorite. The super san roll was a mix of their toro with varying fattiness. I appreciated that you could order half rolls at Sushi-San, which came out to 5 pieces instead of 10. This was more than enough food for me. The sawara was buttery and fresh. If you don't like the "fishiness" of saba, you'll enjoy sawara. Lastly, overall customer service was great. The food came out incredibly fast. The bartender who assisted me was awesome. He was attentive and personable.

I came with a friend for lunch during the week and they have a somewhat decent lunch special (for today's standards when factoring the cost of living and inflation). We took advantage of that and ordered the 3 combo platter per person so we got 6 total items since there was two of us. The highlights for us were three yellowtail yuzu sushi as well as the salmon rice bowl. The miso soup that came out first wasn't that great. It was overly salty. My friend who is from Japan that I ate with said this place was ok for American standards but not at all great compared to anything in Japan lol.

The Alaskan cod sandwich was served on a bed of cabbage covered in a sweet teriyaki & brown mustard sauce with maybe a squeeze of kewpie sprinkled in between. The Berkshire pork eggrolls had microgreens & shaved radish on top of a crema type of sauce that balanced the heat of the kimchi nicely!! For the main attraction I ordered the spicy garlic ramen that was such a delightful mouth experience it really hit all the taste buds! The noodles were perfectly bouncy with the right amount of chew. The jellied egg was perfect and rounded the soup very well! The red chili threads enhanced the spicy miso broth just enough to slurp all the delicious goodness down! My husband ordered the Sapporo miso soup which had more of a creamy type of broth vs the spicy garlic. The noodles were also thinner than regular ramen & had a bouncy springy texture that just hit the spot! Since it was kinda chilly outside we also ordered hot green tea to accompany our spectacular ramen dishes. This place also offers delicious seasonal cocktails on the menu or hot sake if that's what you are hankering for.
