We were out for a walk and looking to stop somewhere for a snack, so we decided to give Onieals a try. Since my last visit, I had only ventured there once for a drink, but it had been far from a first choice. I loved that they had live music and a casual vibe, but my past culinary experience had been a letdown. However, I was very pleasantly surprised on my recent excursion. We grabbed seats at the rustic bar and enjoyed friendly service and pints of Kane Head High, my favorite beer. The crisp, refreshing brew went well with my cup of Chicken Noodle Soup. While that might sound like an odd "snack", I selected it because it was one of the few appetizers on the menu that was not fried. The broth seemed to interestingly be made of tomatoes and potentially other vegetables. It was packed with large, spiral noodles, shredded chicken, and fresh spinach. It was an interesting rendition for sure, but it was also very tasty, despite the fact that it was rather greasy. I was also bummed that it did not have more chicken and that it had not been served with any crackers. Oh well! I walked in feeling a bit confused - mainly with the set-up and how there is a big gap between the door and pavement. Seating is in the back and the bar is in the front. I felt kind of bad for the busker, since the building is obtuse. But he kept my spirits high while I stood up and made myself a makeshift work station. Cannot believe i didn't review this place. 3.5 stars NOT A 3 Off the beaten path of Washington Ave. The food is here is good. The burgers are good fries not bad at all. Salads with chicken are terrific and the penne vodka is pretty good. All in all the food has been consistent for years. Small bar area outside seating and back room to dine. Our favorite neighborhood place. We are there at least once a week and we never leave disappointed. The staff are friendly and attentive. We love the burgers, sandwiches, and my son loves the pasta with vodka sauce. They have a great outdoor patio when the weather is nice. Wednesdays is a great day to go for special wine prices. This is a solid place for a burger! They were very flexible and allowed me to swap a vegetarian burger patty with any of the traditional burgers they had on the menu. I appreciated that aspect! I ended up getting the "raging Cajun" with a veggie patty and it was nice! The only reason to not have it be a 5 star was the fact that it took very long for the food to arrive. The waitress offered us free salad/ bread due to the wait, but as she was offering it our food came out. Other folks around us did get the complimentary salad/ bread. Great spot and location in Hoboken for brunch, lunch, or dinner. I've been coming here consistently over the last 8 years and have never had an item on the menu that has disappointed. The identity is a little mixed - they have Irish food, American, and Italian mixed into one. That being said, I've tried their pasta dishes, burgers, sandwiches, and multiple brunch items and have liked all of them. The bar in the front can be a little tight, so if you plan on coming for a game or space there, get there early to secure a spot. The back room has a nice vibe to it and all the staff members are great. There is an outside seating area across from the park where you can watch the world go by as well. Just went there again today for brunch with the family and had another good experience. read more

This place was great. Fancier seating environment but also a bar vibe section as well. Clean restaurant and waiters dress nice. A bit confusing what vibe this place is because it has both bar food and vibe but also a fancy menu and vibe. Pricing reflects the pricier side but that is typical for the area. Burgers looked really good and classic. Penne alla vodka was super yummy. Food takes a bit to come out but at least that means they may be making it fresh. Onieal's is our absolute favorite burger in Hoboken. They never disappoint when it comes to cooking our burgers perfectly and their house-cut fries taste super fresh! Now they've even upgraded their buns to potato rolls which is a huge bonus for us personally. This time we even tried the chicken finger appetizer which was delicious including their amazing honey mustard. To note: the bar area can get kind of loud/rowdy especially on game days (it is a bar after all). But don't let that deter you if you'd like a quieter area they have both outdoor seating and an additional back room which are both less noisy. The service is always decent but their servers are definitely stretched a little thin. This will always be one of our favorite neighborhood go to spots! read more

Always an amazing trip here - switched it up from my usual burger, which is considered by locals as the best in the area, and went for their chicken sandwich and always amazing fried mozzarella. Sadly disappointed in the chicken sandwich. For the price you're getting one thin chicken cutlet (that was very dry and rubbery) with an actually good buffalo sauce that saved this from being 3 stars. Coming back to O'Nieals for the first time in a year. While the food retains its quality, it was disappointing we had to wait almost an hour for our food (on top of the 30 mins we waited for the table). Hammered chicken and burgers are the go-to options here. The staff seems to be very overworked, it was impossible to get the waiter's attention. Took 15 mins to get someone to bring the bill. A lot of very disappointed diners the night we were there. I did really used to love this place and really hope the service gets back to its usual standard soon. read more

See a lot of complaining about the typically stuff, i.e. a bad experience or something wrong with their orders. Others praising good food and unique old timey bar feel. The main takeaway from Oneal's is it's ridiculously overpriced for what it is. I live a few doors down and would be a regular, but nearly $20 on every entree for something that's marginally better than pub food is a tough sell, even in this inflation environment. The portions are also very small, so they do not compensate for the premium pricing whatsoever. Whenever I eat here, I almost always regret it and look for something more to eat afterward. That said, it's a good place to grab a beer, listen to some live music, and catch a game (although I wouldn't make it a go-to for sports given the TV situation is not the best). One of the best burger spots in Hoboken with some of the best fries I've ever had. Take your pick with any of the burgers because I haven't had anything less than stellar. I can vouch for The Wall Streeter, The Alps, The All American, and The 3 B's. The wings are excellent and the chicken quesadilla is surprisingly solid. I'm serious about the fries. You ask for a medium, and you'll get a juicy, medium cooked burger. This time I ordered the Onieal's Famous with cheddar cheese and fiancé got the Wall Streeter. Can't go wrong with the Famous, it's a classic. But the Wall Streeter is where it's at. The sweet, caramelized onions compliments the salty, crispy bacon.
