I was going to apply online myself but I heard from others that it is quite common for online applications to get denied simply because the photo wasn't uploaded correctly. They don't explain this stuff on the Consulate website. Instead, I called the Huatian Service Center. I went there on a Saturday afternoon and it took only 15 minutes! Peter took care of everything, saved me a trip to downtown, and addressed all of my concerns, including cashless payments in China and how to access internet while abroad.
