I bought a roast beef sub for me and a turkey sub for my spouse and I needed a bag to carry them back to the office. That is how big they are! Each one was not just 1 meal - it was 2 meals and a snack! Seriously - you will not - or according to your doctor - SHOULD not, eat one of Johnny's subs in one seating. They're huge and there's SO MUCH FRIGGING MEAT ON EACH ONE!!! We ate part of our sandwich for lunch, had the remaining part of the 1st half as a snack and then finished off the last half for dinner. And we were full after each eating. Each ingredient was added in just the perfect amount to balance out the whole sandwich - not too much vinegar, not too many onions, not too many tomatoes, not too much mayo - but just enough to create the perfect bite every time! I watched as John made a roast beef sub for someone ahead of me. It was like watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel. Every ingredient was handled with such reverence, such respect, such pride. The meat was freshly sliced and placed just so. The cheese likewise was freshly sliced - so were the onions! John's attention to detail in every aspect of the sandwich was noticeable. The way he added the olive oil and vinegar was truly masterful. I don't wanna be too creepy about this but the way he shook the oregano onto the top was almost a sensual experience. This guy is a find! His subs are a find! His deli occupies a small back corner of a liquor store on P Street in Dupont Circle and he punches way above his weight here. On top of all of this, we had a good, really good, conversation too. Turns out he has no prior food & beverage experience. He just thought that he could make a great sandwich and OMG he did it! It's truly an example of someone who had a great idea, the desire to make an outstanding product and executed it beautifully. Bravo to John. Ok here's another piece of gossip. He is John, not Johnny as the name of his deli states. Johnny is his grandfather; he is just John and in my humble opinion he is a genius. But whatever you call him, his subs are the real deal, made with real, honest to goodness excellent ingredients that are fresh, added in perfect harmony and combined into one of the finest dining experiences I have had recently.
