Really disappointed with this place. It came highly recommended by a trusted foodie and we had a pretty mediocre experience. We ordered the pad thai and panang chicken. Typically, the Thai restaurants we have been to in the past have offered a range of spice options for each, and this place didn't. When we asked if we could make the pad Thai spicy, they told us that it wasn't spicy. We asked again if we could make it spicy and they said they could - but when we got it, it tasted like they literally just added cayenne pepper to it. Same thing with the panang chicken. The flavors just tasted cheap and quick, not deep and rich like our favorite Thai restaurants. The place is cute though! read more

We ordered take out so I can't speak to the restaurant vibe or service inside. Overall, we weren't as impressed as we would have hoped. We ordered the following: - Penang noodle - the curry itself was fine. Just didn't seem too different than other places. I was expecting the noodle to be crispier Or prepared differently but it was just noodle with with curry on top. - pad see wee- usually a go-to item at other restaurants for my toddlers but this was prepared very differently. There was some spice or it had pepper I think so my son didn't take too it. It didn't taste bad; it was just different - pad kraw prow- basil chicken dish was meh. It was strips of chicken so I was disappointed that it wasn't the usual minced chicken you get everywhere else. I will say the ingredients seemed quite fresh. Menu is short which is fine. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and would return! Food review: - Finger sampler - can't decide on which appetizers to get? Try this sampler. It comes with potstickers, crab rangoon, baby rolls, and other rolls with noodles and veggies. My favorite was the baby rolls. - Spicy beef salad (medium spicy) - I had never had this dish before, and it was fantastic. It has pieces of cucumbers, raw onions and beef with lime sauce. You can choose between mild or medium spicy...medium spicy is spicy. So if you do not love spicy, go with the mild. It is actually spicy, which I appreciated. There were many beef pieces. - Chicken pad Thai - I love pad Thai and I found this to be a bit different. It has a very thick sauce, thinner noodles and was sweet and came with what seemed like spiced peanuts. It was very good! - Panang noodles - I love panang curry, so I was excited to see a noodle version! The sauce was fantastic and there were many chicken pieces. It came with thick noodles, similar to what you would get in pad see ewe. I did wish there were more noodles. We ate all the noodles and took the rest home to eat over rice. Service/Ambiance: - Service was great. Our waitress checked on us many times and made sure we always had water. - There weren't that many tables, maybe 8 to 10? - Cool vibe because you can see into the kitchen and see the food come out. - Parking in front of the restaurant was easy. read more

Thai cuisine is probably my favorite of any cuisine I try. I've tried many many Thai restaurants around the city (and have even reviewed a few), but Oliang cafe is BY FAR my favorite in the city. I went there a few days ago for lunch and the food was absolutely amazing. I felt like everything I tried had many levels to the taste and was made perfectly. One thing to note for vegetarians is that all of their noodles except for the pad Thai and Panang noodle special have oyster sauce (cannot be removed). Also, all of their fried rice dishes have oyster sauce which cannot be removed. This does somewhat limit the choice to curry and some noodles, but it's still fine imo. My favorite dish by far was the panang noodles. I think it is a must try. All of the staff was also very nice and very knowledgeable. Finally, the restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's decorated very nicely inside and looks modern. I will definitely be eating here again and again. read more

Haven't left a review in years but had to give Oliang the credit they deserve. My partner and I were seated immediately when we walked in on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. The staff was so friendly as soon as we walked in and kept up the great service throughout our meal. I love the cozy yet modern ambiance. The Thai iced tea was perfect and balanced out the spice in our dishes. We started with the Guichai which was one piece each for the two of us and was delicious. We split the Panang Noodle special which was one of the best panang dishes I've tasted. Didn't have that artificial peanut butter taste from other Thai take out places I've tried. We also split the Spicy Chicken Salad which was also so flavorful and the perfect spice level. Cannot wait to go back and try more! Especially since we're within walking distance. read more

I've been to Oliang twice and both times the food was top notch -- the best Thai in Chicago and the only one that compares to the Thai my fiancée and I have had in California. The first time we shared a Khai Soi, Krapow Kai, and Mango Sticky Rice. All three were delicious, the Khao Soi and Mango Sticky Rice were standouts (my fiancée thought it was the best mango sticky rice of all Thai places she's ever had). The second time we shared Pad See Ew, Panang Curry, and the Coconut Milk dessert. Again all three were delicious, with the Pad See Ew being one of the best versions we've both ever had of the dish. Besides the food, the decor is warm and inviting, and everything is extremely clean. Perfect date night spot. Highly recommend and plan on going back more times to try each menu item. read more

We ordered the fried tofu appetizer, which was delicious with the sweet sauce. For entrees, we ordered the pineapple friend rice, Panang noodles with tofu ( spicy and rich!), and green curry (had an amazing aroma). I ordered a yummy pink drink, and it was so pretty! The place is so clean, the servers are so wonderful! I was so happy I got a picture of the food. My friend got a curry and I can't speak on taste or anything but he ate it all!! The server was so kind and explained the menu to us and talked a little bit about the regions the dishes were from which led to her recommending a dish for my friend. I on the other hand LOVE pad Thai so, it was my very first pick. Like many have mentioned the photo doesn't do the portion size justice! It was A LOT! Nonetheless, I finished it. There is some spice they add that I didn't know of and mixed it all in and it heightened the flavor but was a little spicy (so like it didn't stop me from eating it). I was lucky enough to find street parking on the very busy street of Ashland. So that's a win. Oliang is pretty new and it's cute inside. We came around 1:30 pm for a late lunch, and there was only one other customer in the whole restaurant. The server didn't give us her name, but she was friendly. However, she never came back to check on us after dropping off the food. I even had to wave her down for the check. As for the food, we ordered a beef pad see ew, tofu pad Thai, and a Thai chicken fried rice. The fried rice was the best amongst the three dishes. Both the pad Thai and pad see ew were way too salty. I had to take a sip of water with almost every bite of food. The prices were reasonable, and portions were decent. So I just wished the food was better. Overall, my experience was a meh. read more

My wife and I stopped into Oliang for dinner a few days after my first stop here, and we were not disappointed. The ambience was very friendly and relaxing. I ordered the Panang Curry and my wife the Pad Thai. I like my curry with a little kick, but not so much that it overpowers the taste. The chef, Tan, prepared my curry spot on: a little sweetness, a little nutty flavor and just enough spiciness. My wife loved her Pad Thai. I came here with my immediate and extended family on a Sunday morning. The cafe is such a cute and warm space. We were greeted right away and were seated shortly upon sitting down. We got the finger combo (a sampler platter of appetizers: baby egg rolls, crab rangoon, pot stickers, and crispy rolls), chive dumplings, and another helping of crab rangoon (because... of course). The Thai iced tea takes a little longer to brew, but is worth it. For the nine of us, we had two plates of Thai fried rice, panang curry, krapow kai (basil chicken), mixed vegetables, pad Thai with chicken, and pad si eiw with chicken. I was pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of vegetables they give you in the dishes that can easily be predominantly noodles. My Thai father was also very pleased and he's a tough customer! The staff was very patient and kind with our large group. It's a bit of a trek for us, but we would be happy to visit again. Next time I'm there I'm looking to try the nom champoo (pink milk), which is one of my favorites from childhood. I would also love to try more of their curries. read more
