This establishment was right across from our recent hotel stay in midtown NYC. Wonderful selection of sweet and savory pastries, sandwiches, fresh breads, and hot beverages. There are various locations throughout the city. I chose a poppy seed covered pastry with almond paste and a lemongrass hot tea. Both were excellent. However, service was quite slow and server not so friendly. Visited the next day with family and service was quick and friendly, and the coffee excellent. Prices on the higher end, but clean place with some delicious offerings to eat in or take out. Restroom for customers and a code on receipt is needed to punch in to enter. read more

I had a drink reward to use so I ended up getting the cinnamon social latte with oat milk. I did a pre-order ahead of time, but the drink was not made when I came in and I had to wait, which I feel like defeats the purpose of order ahead. The app always gives me issues here. Once, years ago, Ole & Steen was brand new in Manhattan and we stopped by to share coffee and a pastry. And we bought their version of, I think, a loaf of rye to take home. As I recall, we were unimpressed. But today, so many years later, on our way home from Grand Central Terminal, we found something different! First of all, it's a large storefront and it was packed, almost every table full, with what appeared to be young (20s, 30s) professional people at 4 pm. Lots of chatter, lots of computers open. Couples and groups of assorted combinations huddled around the small but adequate tables. We ordered 2 decaf Americanos and shared a pastry called a raspberry spandauer, a small piece of which is pictured here. It was delicious! Perfect crust, puffy and flaky, dry and not the least bit soggy. In the center, maybe a tablespoon of raspberry jam with sliced almonds scattered on top. Very very good. The coffees are served in paper cups w plastic lids, but hot and good. They also have some small plates and sandwiches if you're there for breakfast or lunch. It'll be nice to go back and try some of those, or try another lovely pastry on another lovely mid-afternoon! read more

Found this place on a whim when I was walking around Manhattan!! It said this was where the "cinnamon social" started and I had no idea what that was so had to try it. Inside felt like a nice modern cafe and they had a bunch of sourdough stuff which I was happy to see!! The cinnamon social WOKE ME UP. It was so good. It made me think of the first time I had Cinnabon and how as an adult this is what I thought or wished Cinnabon would be like. Just cleaner, simpler, and more elegant. Visited Ole & Steen on Lexington Avenue twice for breakfast, hoping for the oatmeal and Bread Plate--both listed as all-day items. Both times, I was told they were sold out at 10 am in the morning. At that point, it feels less like bad luck and more like a consistency issue. If core items aren't reliably available, the menu should reflect that. Their pastry and baked goods case is loaded with breads, muffins, sweets, savory items, and cookies. They have a solid coffee menu and I ordered a macchiato which is my go-to along with a cortado if I'm visiting for the first time. It's usually my test to see if it passes for me to return. Let me preface my review by saying that I am not a Danish pastry fan -- I am a French pastry fan -- but I stopped here because I was curious of their selection. I got a lemon lavender bar and a cardamon bun. I found the lemon lavender bar very sweet (1 star off) and the cardamon bun pretty plain (1 star off). This is a great bake shop to work at! There's Wi-Fi and plenty of seating. There's also not a fight for seats at this location. I'm not that much of a coffee connoisseur, but I do drink a lot of lattes and make my own espresso and coffee drinks at home. I think a latte is worth it when it tastes better than what I can make at home (which it doesn't always), especially as I'm trying to avoid buying drinks outside. The egg is medium hard, should be hard and fully cooked through. The yogurt parfait is interesting with the hard bits of granola and whatever the dark, hard and crunchy stuff is. The fruit salad is okay, could have more berries in it than cantaloupe and green melons. The oat milk latte is okay, as usual. I've been stopping buy to get a few pastries for breakfast before going into the office. I have tried the Savory Spinach Swirl and chocolate croissant. I also ask to have it warmed up before leaving so that it is softer when I eat it in the office.
