How ignorant does a person have to be to give a wonderful comfort food experience one star because, "where is that piano player we like"? Seriously! This restaurant is so good that I make sure to stop there whenever I travel here. As a frequent flyer, finding a gem like this where I can get a taste of home cooking with gourmet flare is really appreciated. The staff is always friendly and I have to say I always feel welcome and important. My wife and I wanted a simple meal out. Nothing fancy. Just some good food we didn't have to cook. As we hadn't eaten at the Olde Hitching Post yet, we checked the reviews and the menu. It looked to fit what we were after. But for the first time in my life, we got up after the first bite of the main course and left. Here's why: We arrived around 7.45pm on a Friday night. The restaurant parking lot was crowded - always a good sign. Inside there were plenty of people at tables but it was by no means full (not surprising as we were eating late). We were seated next to a corridor to the bar where there was live music playing ... Competing with the piped music in the restaurant. Our waitress was friendly enough. We were left two menus on the table with no explanation. One menu looked to be printed up for dinner and was nicely presented. The other, a plastic laminated large format smorgasbord of dishes, appeared to be a more generic bar menu. We decided to order off the dinner menu figuring the food from this menu was more likely fresh. I'd settled on the Prime Rib and my wife would have the Baked Haddock With Shrimp Newburgh sauce. When the waitress returned, my wife ordered the Haddock and I the Prime Rib. The waitress told us then that there was no Prime Rib and apologized for not telling us sooner. I settled on the same as my wife and ordered the Haddock. To start we would have the stuffed mushroom appetizer. The bread roll (2) were warm and fresh. Delicious. Although I had to ask for silverware to eat them with the honey butter. The mushrooms came out in due course. They were floating in a sea of what looked like butter and broth. The mushroom stuffing was soft mushy breadcrumb with zero flavor. Frankly I spat mine out it was so bad. The waitress came by and asked how the mushrooms were. "Terrible" was our joint response. At first she thought we were joking ... "Yes, lots of people like them ... " she began before realizing we were being serious. We sent them back and waited hungrily for the main course. The Haddock arrived. My wife asked me if there was another Haddock on the other menu. Apparently this is what we had been served.. When the waitress was walking by we stopped her to ask if we had the Haddock we ordered. "oh, you wanted the special?". "We were looking at that menu, why would you assume we wanted something off the other menu?" I asked. I suggested that perhaps it was her responsibility to inquire of us which Haddock we would like if there was more than one available. She responded, "I didn't know I was supposed to interpret your pointing!" And walked away. Aghast, (after all this isn't Dicks Last Resort), I took a taste of the Haddock. It was tasteless and watery ... Most likely frozen. My wife felt the same. We got up and got our coats. On the way out I pulled the manager aside to explain why we were leaving. The manager was very apologetic and understanding. She offered to make it up in some way. We declined ... We'd had enough. We ended up with fast food. If you like bland, overcooked food you might like it here. If you like fresh food that has flavor, I strongly recommend you look elsewhere. read more

Went here last night w/a friend of mine who is from Hanson. Yes we did see the Gordon Ramsey episode. We both started off with the crab cakes, they came out hot but both had been broken open. I think this was done to check the internal temperature( I hope the cook did not use his finger!) They tasted good but I had to use my knive to scrape off the copious amount of old bay mayo they felt it neede to make a good impression, Not. On to the entreres. we both love short ribs and this is the reason why we went. Their verson is short rib strogonoff w/noodles. The plates arrived and there where three good size pieces of bonless meat on the plate w/mushrooms and pearl onions and noodles and a dollop of sour cream in between the meat and NO GRAVY!! So, I proceeded to take a bite of the meat i almost choked, the meat was dry as the Sahara desert. Mine went back but my friend continued to eat his saying is was moist. I ordered the london broil extra rare wich came out a good medium rare at best but it was flavorfull dish , the vegatables where a medly of grilled zucchini, squash and peppers. At the end my friend left one piece of beef saying it was to dry to eat.. He should have followed my lead..... Needless to say, we wont be running back...... read more

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. I don't know what happened - I suspect another owner - but everything we loved about it is gone. The menu, although we were there for lunch, was definitely dinner prices. The menu was one laminated page of items we could get at any chain restaurant. As a matter of fact, chain restaurants have better menus. In previous years, the menu was many pages long, filled with unique dishes and seasonal delights. The waitress confessed that the cook was not ready for lunch customers - rolls were just being baked. The Sunday Brunch Buffet we loved is no longer there. The food was good, but the portions were HUGE - enough food for 4 people. I would have preferred smaller portions AND smaller prices for lunch. But the worst thing about the restaurant is the ugly decor! Evidently they just remodeled. The colors are drab gray, drab brown, drab green and white. We were seated at tables that would be boring at a diner. The walls are white painted barn board. No curtains, no color, and the ugliest "seaside" painting I've ever seen. The old Hitching Post was homey, filled with color, flowers, patterns, tablecloths and unique decor items. The place now looks ugly and sterile - I've seen better looking hospital cafeterias. Save your money and go to the 99 Restaurant - it will be much more fun. read more

Me and my boyfriend were looking for Damian's and stumbled upon this hidden gem. The first night we sat at the bar and ordered Moscow mules and they were so delish. We split the two fillets over Parmesan rissoto with a red glaze with mushrooms and asparagus. It was so yummy I woke up in the middle of the night to eat the left overs. We went back a week later on a Friday and were seated right away and our waitress was so friendly and understanding I wasn't eating carbs and joked about dessert just in case. We were in and out so quick our car was still warm. We live it here and I thought for a min to even post this because I'm afraid of more people finding out how good it is we won't have as much luck getting in and out next time. We went back to Olde Hitching Post months ago after hearing that Gordon Ramsey had done a "make over". We went about a week after it had re-opened and was very disappointed in the menu and food. After watching the program a few weeks ago, we decided to give it one more try, hoping that our last visit was a fluke and they were still tweaking their menu. Wrong!!!! The menu is still presented on one page and has absolutely no interesting dishes on it. The meat loaf is still listed (and I would never order that after seeing the show) and a few italian dishes and chicken dishes. We started out with the scallops wrapped in bacon. They were very tasty, with a swirl of raspberry sauce to dip in. My husband had the creamy dijon chicken, which was on the bland size. I had a chicken special, with artichokes hearts, sun dried tomatoes in a creamy sauce. More sauce than anything else, was luke warm at best, and no artichoke hearts. Disappointing at best. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, but paid more attention to their loyal customers than to the ones that were actually spending money and trying their food. Went here today for a light lunch with the ex. Had to consider that we only ordered buffalo wings, and he ordered a side of mashed and gravy. I mean...the atmosphere was warm and country style. The waitstaff was more than friendly due to barely anyone being there at lunch (probably more of a dinner place). The menu was rather sparse, the only thing that really caught my eye was the "short rib stroganoff," I love a good stroganoff, and this sounded like an interesting and tasty twist. Their lunch menu was very limited, I doubt their dinner menu is. With that being said..... here it goes... The wings were beyond mediocre, either fried or baked (thinking fried/overly), and tossed in what I think was your A typical Frank's red hot sauce. They were served over blue cheese dressing, along with fresh blue cheese crumbles, celery, and carrots. I mean they're buffalo wings right? But they were only just "ok," I mean I've had WAY better. My ex seemed to like the mashed, he was given turkey gravy and asked if he prefered beef, he was fine with the turkey gravy but also requested additional. I believed he enjoyed, he didn't say much, but he usually doesn't, he only ate about half, but like I said, it was only a light lunch. I will embellish/review again if I go back for dinner. Presentation was a winner for it being just wings, but overall nothing special. We shall see. I doubt I'll be back seeing as how I will no longer be in the area. read more

Last night my husband and I dined at The Olde Hitching Post for the first time in a while. Our server Carla was very attentive and personable. I have known Carla for over 20 years and she is one of the best! Very knowledgeable with the menu and made great recommendations! We started with the Mediterranean Salad. Delicious! Very fresh ingredients... perfectly tossed in the house dressing. My husband had the twin filets which were perfectly cooked. I had the Scallops Aegean. Delicious! Great selection of desserts delivered daily by Montilios. The entertainment, Jay Psaros was wonderful! He sounded just like James Taylor! Andrea, Spiro and staff are very warm and inviting. My wife and I have been coming to the Hitching Post since Tom bought it (maybe 5 years ago?) We probably go 5 or 6 times a year and had a family event in one of their function rooms. The food is way above the standard of most local places. It is in the same league as Mockingbird with a similar price range. Greek is their specialty so order any Greek dish off the specials. I often order fish and it is always good. We enjoyed the Hitching Post as a date night place before our child was born and now we bring our kid there. It is kid friendly but we don't notice many noisy kids when we go for date night dinner. Something for everyone! read more

have always wanted to try this place and finally did on Wednesday night, and glad I did....really cute from the outside, comfy on the inside..sat in a booth, it was not super busy being a wed night...I had the braised short ribs with asparagus and a creamy cheese risotto...pretty delish..my friend had the maple meatloaf with mashed potatoes and butternut squash..he seemed to enjoy it very much..our waitress was very friendly and attentive, keeping the water filled and brought us 4 warmed rolls right off the bat which had a soft cinnamon butter...yum! Another star for OHP! The breakfast we gobbled down this morning was divine! The eggs must be from a local farm for the yolks were huge and sweet. The corned beef hash is homemade. We are long time customers of olde Hitching Post. Will never return again. Looking at most of the guest that come to the restaurant is older people.the problem is the menus . The price that is printed is not the correct price. We were not told that it is incorrect. My husband questioned the hostess who said it is printed prices are subject to change. Who would know to look for that? I am concerned about elderly people on a fixed income , who would not know that the prices are not correct.when I called to speak to the manager she seemed not to be surprised. After many attempts to get my message across she put me in contact with the owner Lorie. Well she cut me off right away making an excuse that prices are changing on them all the time. I stated that I believe that if you have it printed a price you must honor it. She told me that she will talk to her staff to change this cause she can't deal with these phone calls anymore. We live just around the corner and can walk there. They are under new ownership and seem to be doing much better than ever! They the breakfasts are great! My wife loves the french toast and then Bomblett is my favorite. We are planning on doing back soon to eat dinner. I also think that I am going to go some afternoon and check out the tavern side. This place could be great but it fails spectacularly in a couple fundamental areas. First the good-the food is great. The staff acts like they are running a VIP section at the Ritz. Rude, annoyed to be there, and no personality would best describe the staff at the front desk. Its off putting because there isn't a smile to be found anywhere. The atmosphere is similar to having breakfast at a funeral home, very quiet and the decor is museum like...and not in a good way. I've been here multiple times and the food has always been amazing. But my experience tonight with a to go order brought the place down. I got a To Go salad and soup and when I got home the salad was dressed. I went back and said the dressing wasn't on the side and could I have a new one, being it's for my lunch tomorrow. She took the salad and had them make me a new one. But proceeded to throw statistics at me saying "Well 95% of people prefer the dressing on the salad, so if you're ordering something, you should think about how it normally comes and that's how it'll come". I don't believe that people want their to go salad wilted and soggy when they get home. And as a customer I shouldn't sit there and be spoken to in that way. Let alone, I've never ordered a to go salad that didn't come with the dressing on the side. So sorry my common knowledge doesn't seem to match this establishments. read more

Overall experience is great! The atmosphere was great and the food was great also. Our waitress,Carla, was delightful and wonderful. Whether you want a hearty meatloaf or something light in a salmon, this place ceases to impress. The one area they could improve upon would be overall service. I received the dine but no wine. My sister and I were pleasantly surprised one night when we happened upon this little gem called The Olde Hitching Post on route 58 in Hanson. We were most surprised at the the very reasonable prices for the quality of their cuisine. Food was hot, and delicious! Those warm and crusty rolls with the maple butter are to die for. Table linens are a super nice touch too. We have been there many times since and even tried their breakfast, wow, you have got to try the crunchy french toast! Their eggs benedict were awesome as well. The staff bends over backwards and are very friendly and accomodating. We had enjoyed an appetizer (on special) called mediterranean bruschetta (goat cheese, spinach, artichokes and balsamic glaze) our first time there and when we asked about it yesterday, the owner went and made an order special for us! They also made a special appetizer of one of their entrees for us when I couldnt decide between two items. My sister loved her herb-encrusted baked haddock and I enjoyed turkey dinner, freshly roasted you could tell. For dessert we shared a crispy, hot home-made apples turnover ala mode, scrumptious! Have not yet sampled alcoholic beverages as we dont drink much, but they look good. We plan to dine there often in the future and use their catering services as well (we saw a woman pick up trays of food and they looked wonderful) so I asked for a catering menu. Well.. My Brother and I are HUGE Kitchen Nighmare fans and saw this establishment on the show and we thought let's try it out.. We arrived and we did NOT sit in the seating area (where several changes were made to the decor on the show) we went and sat at the bar.. Now, on this particular night we has been to several establishments in Hanson and one thing I came to realize, the avergae age of patrons at all these places seem to be about 73. When we seated ourselves at the bar it was a snails pace getting someone to serve us.. When we were greated our bartender was very nice.. We got our drinks and menus very quickly.. I had already reviewed the menu and knew what I wanted, I was DYING for scallops wrapped in bacon (one of my all time fav's) and my Brother and I love Crab Cakes (as it says on the menu) and we put those in for apps.. Well, the bartender flat out says "We have no scallops tonight".. WHAT!! I was pissed I had so been looking forward to those.. Then she tells us it in not crab cakes, it is crab cake (singular).. Whatever, that's we got it.. It came out pretty quickly, was cooked nicely and it was delicious.. Our enteress.. We both got steak tips with whole belly clams.. The food came out in a timely fashion, we both had mashed, seemed made fresh, was very good. My tips were overcooked slightly (had asked for medium) but they were still very tasty.. Clams were breadly nicely, they were in their own bowl on the dish, there was lilttle to no oil in the bowl, they were very good.. Our bartender did consistenly check on us.. Now to the weird part of the evening at this place.. The guy next to me says.. "Can I put on your glasses"?.. "HUH" I asked.. "I am kind of old" (not to mention he was WASTED) but he said he" can't read his bill and needs my glasses". I told him they are not for "reading, they are for near sightness", he said "That's fine".. My Brother was dying laughing.. "OK I said, here you go".. he puts them on, looks at his bill, instantly says: "What the fuc* is wrong with your eyes I can't read a thing these must not be helpful to you"(Guess the they are NOT reading glasses went over his head).. I asked him 'Do you want me to fill out your bill for you"? (He had tried.. his bill was only 14.77 and he was leaving a 14.77 tip).. I told him that and his pacemaker ( I am sure he as one) almost stopped.. I ended up filling out his bill for him.. That was a first for sure.. They also have a DJ playing the greatest hits from President Lincoln's era.. That surely got the 100 year old's off their butts and out on that dance floor.. Not a great place to hang and have fun, or watch a game, unless you are on AARP.. However, food was pretty good and our service was good as well.. Below based on 5 stars.. OOPS... my last review did not mention that the hostess has an attitude, and not a good one. I overlooked it as her having a bad day. Time for a correction. We went again last night... She has a bad ATTITUDE! Not good for your entry to a restaurant. Also...I asked for a substitute to the offered vegetable, and was quoted an additional $1. for asparagus. Five pieces of asparagus, and the waitress made a mistake, it was $2. This is asparagus season... a whole pound is less than $2.... and I didn't order this as a separate side dish, it was an "upgrade" to an offered vegetable. Two others in our party ordered asparagus and thought it was undercooked and tough. The chicken that was ordered was overcooked and dry. This visit says to me... ENOUGH... I won't be back. read more

My family and I went here for breakfast this morning, with hope, after hearing Chef Ramsey had made changes. Well sadly there is nothing to rave about. After ordering our meals, they forgot one of my sides. (hash) which I wish that I had forgotten as well. My mother got the hash omelet. It was so bad it was all we could do not to spit it out, it tasted the way dirty sox smell. (pardon the graphic description but it's 40 min later and I can still taste it.) I never do this but both of us had to send it back. The waitress never checked back up on us but thankfully she had two awesome bus boys, without which this experience would have gotten one star, as they delivered drinks, forgotten food, and ketchup(which was by the way crusty and actually BLACK AROUND THE TOP.) My mother ordered French toast instead by the time she got it my step father and I were already finished eating. This could have been avoided had the server checked on us. We ate here last week after seeing a repeat of Kitchen Nightmares where this restaurant was featured .... I wouldn't call the food or staff a nightmare, but it wasn't a dream either... It was barely average, if that. We had the meatloaf and a cobb salad with grilled chicken... I could make a better meatloaf at home... It was completely bland... The salad wasn't bad, nor did it stand out... Nothing here did... Food, atmosphere, service... It's nothing special... Not worth going out of your way for at all... After Ramsey and his tv show went to Olde Hitching Post in Hanson Ma. the menu and the decor has changed for the better. Great atmosphere and the food is wicked awesome. Highly recommend eating here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. After my company painted the exterior of this restaurant I have become very good friends with owners and their family. My boyfriend and I have been here a few times. We moved to the area fairly recently. The food and drinks are good and the servers are friendly. The only bad experience we have had is at breakfast on a Sunday morning. The food was good and it came out fairly quickly, however our server was not very attentive or helpful. She took our drink order and then when she came back with them we ordered our food, but then she never came back to our table again. Another girl dropped our food off, she didn't ask us if we wanted anything else. My drink was gone before I was half way through my breakfast and no one ever came back to our table to check on us. My boyfriend had to flag someone down to get us our bill after waiting for 15 minutes with empty plates stacked up at the edge of our table. It really wasn't that busy either. We have had good dinner experiences there, but my boyfriend said he'd never want to go back for breakfast again. read more

I find this place to be such a gem. I used to go all the time for brunch as a kid. Moved down the street and we come here quite often. It has a tavern, cozy feeling. Great live music Friday & Saturday. Sunday night is open mic. I was surprised by the talent. There aren't many places in the area with the casual and comfortable atmosphere. Well, I may be the first to say it, but I actually liked this place better before Gordon Ramsay came in. We went there about 3 weeks after, and it didn't seem to be much better. The decor was way up from what it used to be, but other than that there's nothing to shout about. First of all, the menu is very limited. There isn't really much to choose from, especially for a person who doesn't eat much meat. But anyway, I got the haddock and it was extremely chewy, so much that I couldn't even eat half of it. The clam strips were good, but for the most part the whole meal was very dissapointing. I would say go there once and try for yourself, because you never know if my taste is different than yours; just be warned that it's not the best restaurant in town. read more
