Old Town Cafe is a casual eatery with New Mexican charm. Located right across from Albuquerque's Old Town Plaza/Square, my husband and I wanted a quick breakfast with authentic New Mexican flavor. This place succeeded. The tamale bowl with pork was what we both ordered individually, and it was fantastic. We didn't realize it was going to be spicy hot, but we ate it with fervor regardless. This is a place you walk up to the counter to order, and then they give you a laminated card (on a metal stand) with a number. We both ordered items that were listed separately from the rest of the menu. I got the green chili burger ($11.95) and my wife got the three soft tacos ($12.50). She also got an iced latte ($5.65). This cafe has a nice open area with neat stuff on the walls to look at, my favorite was the angel wings, has a fair amount of food choices, fast, pleasant, clean, quick service. Food was a little too hot, tamales were small. I thought price was little too much for what I ordered. The cashier up front seem to be overwhelmed, with just a few people. Waited for a bag after I asked for my to go box and bag, and asked again for my bag, yelling to the ones in the back for the bag I got it after waiting for a few minutes. Really good, food and drink were consistent. We had a bison hot dog (I know right!?!?), piña colada smoothie, Albuquerque Turkey sandwich, and churros. The hot dog was amazing and had lots of good flavor, the smoothie was fantastic as well and really brought a nice flavor and wasn't watered down. The Albuquerque turkey was the only thing that was less than ideal. The idea was good but it wasn't grilled for long enough and the turkey inside was a little cold. Although the churros were FANTASTIC they had lots of sugar but not too much. The person who took our order was very kind and answered a few questions we had about the food. The area inside the restaurant was the best part. It has a nice fireplace in the corner and lots of fun New Mexican decoration. The place has a great vibe which for me pushes it up to 5 stars. We had a decent lunch here. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. It is nice that they have some vegetarian options esp since we wanted New Mexican cuisine. Prices are good. We had a prickly pear soda which was nice. Not to sweet. I had the relleno bowl and my husband had the tamale bowl. Relleno bowl was the better one. Tamales weee a bit dry. This place defintely benefits from location. The historic building is charming, and the interior is cheerful and colorful. A good selection of sandwiches, smoothies,& drinks. When we were there, service was a bit scattered, and they were down to just one functioning toilet, but I got the feeling that was an anomaly. I had a delicious cold bottle of Mexican Coke,with a veggie wrap. We could hear live music from the plaza square, where there was a classic car get-together, and various other gatherings happening. Lunch chile rellenos were flavorful and magnificently tender. Breading was very light and non-oily. Whole beans on top were excellent texture, though pretty low in the heat department as I recall. Demerits for portion being small & cost running a couple bucks high for the portion size to my estimation. Yeah, I know, it's right on the plaza in the heart of Old Town, pleasant decor, subdued noise level, etc etc etc. I would still hope for a larger portion or a downtick on the ticket. read more

The food and service was great. Best Frito Pie I have had! It was quite spicy so if you love spice this is it. My daughter had the chilie relleno bowl. It was also good but not as spicy as the frito pie. So if one is not use to very spicy food this would be a good choice read more

What a fantastic little cafe. We were just walking by, starving. My hubby stuck his head in and said he wanted to look at a menu. I'm so glad he wanted to stay. Very clean and inviting inside. I had the bison hot dog (it was to die for) and the chicken tortilla soup. The soup was full of flavor and had a nice steamed tortilla with it. My hubby had the pork enchilada bowl, which he devoured. Everything was prepared perfectly and no salt or pepper was necessary for anything we had. The staff is just adorable and warm. Service was excellent. I love that I could get a black iced tea and add rose flavor to it! The food is good as well. Very hot, quickly prepared, and fresh. The atmosphere here is very New Mexico-meets-Route 66. I don't see outlets by tables, so probably not a great writing spot if you need a laptop charger. Great views out the windows, and the temperature in the place is great! Not too hot and not too cold. It was a sunny day, but adequate shading made the interior space bright enough to see well but not so bring I needed sunglasses. Love it. read more

I thought the steak fajitas were decent. The flavors of the sauces were mild, but I think that's just New Mexico in general. It was nice and warm inside the day before snowfall. The entire space is much larger than expected. It's a good spot to dine in while checking out old town. read more

Great spot for lunch right in downtown Albuquerque. The restaurant was big and not too busy. They had lots of options plus a bunch of smoothies on the menu but I just wanted something easy and on the healthier side. I ordered my lunch to go to enjoy the nice fall weather. They were fairly quick - I only waited maybe 10 minutes for my wrap. My veggie wrap was tasty - nothing too fancy and it came with a bag of chips which I didn't need.
