    Crepe with Chinese donut
    Nancy L.

Yelp reviewers have been saying that this is a Taiwanese stand but I have my doubts. Old Street Express does have a couple of traditional Taiwanese food; however, they also sell traditional mainland Chinese food as well, such as the crepe, which originated from China (one reviewer indicated that it's a "Taiwanese crispy crepe"). They also sell tofu dessert but they called it "tofu brain" (literal translation) and only mainland Chinese people call it as such. We Taiwanese people call it "tofu flower". With technicalities aside, the reason I wanted to try was mainly for the beef noodles. I have a serious addiction to Taiwanese beef noodles. We also got the Taiwanese braised pork rice and the crispy crepe. For the crepe, you can choose between fritter or Chinese donut. We opted for the latter but I highly recommend that you don't. I had imagined that the Chinese donut would be crispy but it wasn't. It was soft and doughy. In addition, the whole crepe was so dry. I've had much better ones in Beijing or even at President Plaza in Richmond (I believe the vendor is currently closed due to covid). The braised pork rice was ok. If a Taiwanese vendor can go wrong with this dish, then you'd have a serious problem. I found the price a little too steep for what we got. If you know how to make the dish like I do, you'll know cheap it is to make everything that's in the rice bowl. The beef noodle was a HUGE disappointment. Firstly, the bowl was SO very tiny and they charged $10.95!! Normally, I can't finish a soup noodle on my own but I was able to finish this bowl very easily. Secondly, the soup was not rich and fragrant. Lastly, the beef was way too salty. For the latter two food items, you're much better off going to Public Market and get them from either Chef Liu or Potelicious. The only pro from this place is that each meal came with a drink but that alone isn't enough for me to go back again. Bye bye!

I was happy to see A Taiwanese stand opening up in Landsdown so was eager to try out their food. Unfortunately, my anticipation was not met with an equally good food experience. I tried the beef brisket noodle soup and the pigs feet on rice dishes. The beef brisket, normally a soft melt in your mouth feel, was tough and chewy to the point of almost jerky-like. The noodles seemed like the type you buy in the supermarket and the soup base was really thin and lacking in any body. One-star for this dish. Moving on, the pigs feet had good taste so that was a plus. However, the portion size was small...four small pieces that was about 90% bone. The rest was a lot of filler plain white rice, an overcooked hard boiled egg (tasteless too) and some veggies. Two stars for that. Service was friendly though so that was a redeeming quality. I hope they up their food quality though!

Beef noodle soup. Tastes like Ichiban instant noodles.

Save yourself the money and get your food from R and H a few stalls beside this place. It's located inside the Lansdowne Mall Food Court. I ordered the beef noodle soup and the bbq duck crepe and canned drink. The soup tastes exactly like Ichiban soup base and the noodles are instant too. The duck in the crepe tasted bland and was served cold in a freshly made crepe. For this amount of money you will get better value at R and H a few stalls down.

Last week , I went to Landsdowne and was hungry. So I decided to try this place out, as it was pretty new for me. The food was delicious and definitely big in portions. It's very filling for me.

My only feedback would be is if they had some photos on their menu to be more clear as to what the dishes are and how they are prepared.

What's appealing here is that their Instagram advertises daily specials so you can get some dishes for a great discount (like 40% off). We tried the braised combo (pork ear, pork intestines, fish cake), Taiwanese egg wrap, braised pork sauce rice with deep fried pork chop, and yam taro mochi balls. The braised combo is pretty solid - I didn't really like the funkiness to the intestines (I generally enjoyed it in barbecue settings) but the fish cake was fantastic. I also liked the texture of the pork ears. The Taiwanese egg wrap was a bit tasteless, so I wouldn't recommend. Braised pork sauce rice is the lu ruo fan which is a large portion with seaweed, bean sprouts, and soup on the side. Pork chop was flavorful and juicy but not crispy batter, which is okay. Yam taro mochi balls were sweet and chewy. I don't like taro but I loved this dessert! Service is okay. They give a water jug for self pour but the water jug was of questionable cleanliness. The specials were not discounted so we called it out and we weren't told that we had to put the order with a server, not the QR code, so it was a strange interaction. They ended up honoring the discount. Also, they shut down ordering 1 min before 10:30pm - guess they didn't want more money as we wanted to order 1 more dish and they preemptively told the kitchen to close. Sure it's fine no big deal, it was a lot of food.

The dining space is small but the decoration inside makes you feel like you transported to a different country. Marshmallow Thick Toast 4/5 The toast was about an inch thick, well toasted outside with a pillowy soft center. There's some melted chocolate on the bottom that added to the smores vibe. The marshmallows on top weren't very thick, so it melted to an even layer with perfect browning. The toast was cut into 9 pieces so it can be shared but given the portion I think 1-2 people would be fitting for this dessert. We weren't too hungry, so we shared amongst 4. Jasmine Tea Jelly 4/5 I really liked how fragrant the jelly was and that the jelly was a softer jelly that reminds you of Aiyu jelly. The after taste was a bit bitter but I feel like that tells me it was brewed and made and not just bought to serve. It's served with a splash of half and half I believe. To-Go I wanted to try and compare all the tea flavored jellies they had, Jasmine, Oolong and Earl Grey Tea Jelly. Packaged with small packets of the half and half to add later. The best was OOLONG 5/5- it had a slight roasted tea flavor that was refreshing and comforting at the same time. What you would want from a milk tea. Second best was Jasmine - fragrant and less bitter than the one I had in restaurant, typical jasmine flavor that's lightly floral and not too heavy Earl Grey 3/5 - it was good if you like earl grey like me, but it has an intensely strong fragrance and flavor that might be off-putting if you're not used to the taste. It was by far the strongest floral taste and smell of the three. I'd definitely be back to get these to go, they carry well and you can cross borders with them :)

We stopped by at lunchtime at first, but they weren't open yet. Since we really wanted to try it, we called again in the evening to confirm their hours before heading back--and we're so glad we did. The service was excellent from start to finish. They were incredibly patient and took the time to answer all of our questions thoroughly, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The food did not disappoint. All the Taiwanese snacks we tried were delicious and full of authentic flavors. Our absolute favorite was the shaved ice--it was refreshing, perfectly textured, and just amazing! Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for genuine Taiwanese food and warm, attentive service. Definitely a 5-star experience!

Thanks for the recommendation Jando S. At first glance, the prices are average for this type of food. However, once I saw the humongous portions, I believe this vendor should clearly be categorized as cheap eats. For example, for roughly $10, you get three large pork chops (fried or marinated, I slightly preferred the fried more), sautéed cauliflower in XO sauce, soy braised tofu skin (so good I paid for extra $5 portion), crunchy pickles, stewed fish tofu, marinated egg, and a whole separate box of white rice. This is easily $15-20 in NYC. Same price for the crispy, tender, and juicy Chicken Nuggets (aka Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken) with all the trimmings. The quality of every item in the box was top notch and all very delicious. What many customers ordered that interests me for the next visit was the Salt & Pepper Chicken (椒麻鸡), which was basically a huge piece of pounded chicken thigh, battered like the popcorn chicken, with a mala sauce on top. This is a gem for the people who live locally in the area. Such bang for the buck!
