We had reservations at Downtown Old Spaghetti Factory on a Sunday for a couple of birthdays. It wasn't busy when we arrived which was nice. We could have a conversation without all of the background noise of a full restaurant. But luckily this location has a lot of noise dampeners, which is nice. We were seated in the trolly seating area, which we've never sat in ever. That was a neat experience. My wife is Celiac and there were a couple of gluten free options on the menu which was very nice to have. The restaurant manager even came by the table to say there cooks will try and be extra careful because of her allergy. Our food arrived with a salad first of your choice and dressing and then the main dishes arrived next. Was very rich, fresh made noodles and very filling. This place is an oldie but a goodie! There are locations across Canada and for the most part they are all the same, great food, great prices, they are even decorated the same! Lots of old wood and stained glass. I love their all inclusive meals that include bread and dessert. The dessert is just ice cream, but it's good. The lunch menu is great too. I ordered soup, and salad and it also came with the bread and dessert. Our server was great, friendly and attentive and even joked with us. It was a lovely time. There are several selections you can make for under $20 that accompanies a choice of salad or soup, tea or coffee, unlimited bread with garlic butter and a scoop of ice cream to finish off your meal. The portions are large and satisfying. Usually, just on the bread and salad alone, I get quite full and have to pack my pasta up to take home. My personal favorites are the Chicken Penne and the Clam Spaghetti for entrees and for appetizers the bam bam shrimp and a peach Bellini. Ate here both nights on our 2 night visit to Edmonton. Clean, no wait to get a table, the best service we've had on our 9 day Alberta road trip and wonderful meals which were a tremendous value. Can't say enough good about this restaurant! We enjoyed ourselves so much the first night that we returned the next night which was Friday and Game 6 of the Stanley cup finals! The last time I came here was almost 20 years ago for lunch and after my visit I got pink eye so I never returned. We were in the area and decided to have dinner there. It was shortly before 8 and there were a few people waiting for a table ahead of us. They cleaned up some tables and we didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes. The booth was at the front of the restaurant but on the side so I liked that. Our server was very friendly and she came to get our drink orders and then bought them back with our bread. I love that warm bread where the garlic butter just melts right into it. I ordered the seafood linguine marinara and has a salad with the sesame dressing on the side. The salad dressing was very good and the salad had nice and dark green leaves. The pasta arrived shortly after we finished the salad and the timing of the food was perfect especially being busy in the restaurant. There was a decent amount of shrimp, scallops, and mushrooms. After eating bread and salad, I ate half my pasta and had the rest the next day. I was pleasantly surprised as I remember previous visits I didn't like the mushy spaghetti. First review of 2019. Let's kick it off with this banger! OSF is a classic. It's been around for ages and I don't think the business is going anywhere anytime soon... I honestly don't know what to say. You get your best bang for you buck here. At lunchtime, $15 will get you a soup or salad, pasta and dessert and coffee and tea... are you fucking kidding me? What more can they add? The keys the restaurant? My go-to here is the chicken penne with the side of French onion soup.... damn. The French onion soup here is incredibly cheesy and hearty.. the cheese sticks to the bowl and to your gums. The chicken penne is a classic. As for the pictures, you can see that I clearly fucked up and got a house salad... (don't get this as a side)... Some of you out there might criticize this review and compare it against those other snobby Italian restaurants whom which serve you a kid sized portion of alphagettis for triple the price. But hear me out. You get your money's worth for the food and it's not insanely terrible. There could be more seasoning here and there but which place couldn't use a touch of salt and peppa. Look this is the place for a good carb up. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT come here if you are on a keto diet. I always end up eating way too much of the warm bread with the garlic butter and the pasta dishes have to get packed up. I can never finish it all. The prices are great and include quite a few extras. The one thing I would improve on is the service, they are very on it or really not on it. It seems there is no middle ground. And for goodness sakes, do not go here on a game night or when something is happening at Rogers Place. The place is a mad house and nothing gets done right. Been going here for years with family. The best thing about this place is the good service and prices. Food is also decent, but if you're looking for fine dining, you may be disappointed. That said, the service is always really friendly and quick. It's also great that all meals come with bread, salad and ice cream. Very good place for families and large groups. I typically order the Manager's Favorite, which lets you choose two different sauces and seems to have a larger portion than the single-sauce dishes. My favorite sauce is the Mizithra Cheese sauce, though some might find it too salty for their taste. I would stay away from the meat sauce, as I find it watery and bit bland. I would say that the food isn't terribly unique but it's hearty and the fact that meals here include soup or salad, tea or coffee, and spumoni ice cream makes this place rather budget friendly and a great place to visit if you want to linger over your meal. Additionally it includes a good array of pasta options, if perhaps some rather predictable choices. The only thing I could see that would be an improvement would be is to include the drink as well into the price. As well as the up charge for Caesar salad is kind of ridiculous. Since the times have changed with most restaurants, Caesar salad is usually not up charged at most other places. The bread they give to start and keep bringing out is very delightful though, warm and fresh. The menu could use an update as well but definitely try to keep most the original items if you do decide to update. Customer service/restaurant look: The staff was very polite and friendly. Definitely a well organized crew for a Friday evening when they are busy. Kudos for that because I know it can get tricky with different orders and especially at a location where kids orders can get complicated. It may improve for speed if you install drink dispensers at some of the waiters rest locations where they put the big trays down. I've seen this at locations where they experience high volumes of customers and this location definitely would benefit greatly from a few of those installed. Now this is the second time I've been here and I really enjoyed the first experience i had here. The meals here always come with a free loaf of fresh bread to munch on, with a choice of two different butters (garlic or regular) for spread. The main course also comes with a choice of garden salad or minestrone. Our server informed us that the minestrone was good, upon seeing us struggling on our choice for soup or salad, so all three of us settled on the minestrone soup. The service was a bit slow but our server did inform us it was her first shift alone, though she did make a valiant effort. 25 minutes in after ordering we received our soup. We all found it to be a bit salty and not that wowing but it wasn't too horrible. An extra 25 minutes after we finished our soup, we got our dishes. My friends both had different variations of the seafood pasta, one with linguini and the other with Alfredo. I myself ordered the Cajun chicken Alfredo as I ordered it the first time we came here and I loved it. The pastas we ordered were super filling, and I barely got through 1/3 of my pasta as I was already super filled from the bread and soup. Plus 1+ points for going home with left overs! My friends managed to finish their meals but slowly and sluggishly as they too were full to the brim. The end of the meal came with complimentary ice cream, choice of a mixture of pistachio, vanilla and chocolate or regular vanilla. This has ALWAYS been my birthday dinner restaurant.. since I was very little. You absolutely cannot beat the value here. My mom and I ate for $30 total... that includes your beverage (it says coffee or tea, but they rarely charge you if you get a pop instead), soup or salad, pasta dish, bread & amazing whipped butter, and dessert. I always have enough to take leftovers for lunch the next day.. it is absolutely amazing. I've also tried some of the more expensive entrees (chicken parm, canneloni etc...) and have never been disappointed, but I always go back to my standard - Manager's special (which allows you to choose TWO sauces) with spicy meat sauce and the mizithra & browned butter. I can't get enough... my mouth is actually starting to water at 8:30 in the morning just thinking about it.. I can't give it 5 stars because although I've never had a complaint with the food, the service can definitely be spotty sometimes. My most recent visit was for my birthday in March this year. they were adequately staffed and the restaurant only had about 5 or 6 tables occupied, but our server would disappear for inappropriate lengths of time and our food took a lot longer than usualy to get to us. Once we did get it, it was incredibly apparent that our dishes had been sitting under the heat lamp for quite some time (some pasta noodles had dried out and some were sticking to the edge of the plate). I would have brought it to the server's attention, but we didn't see her again until it was time for dessert. Even that couldn't ruin the experience though. We were on the patio so it easy to lose track of customers (out of sight-out of mind) but he was always coming shortly after to take our order, check on us, fill our drinks and tend to us. My hubby and I were downtown and decided to try this location. We were impressed that it was busy on a Wednesday night and remembered there was a concert at Roger's Place that evening. Nontheless, we were seated right away in a booth. The staff were warm and friendly and our orders were taken quickly. I love the garlic butter that they serve with the warm bread while you wait for your meal. I ordered the Chicken Penne and it was a large portion. The sauce was a tasty cream sauce with mushrooms and a hint of coconut. The chicken looked like prepackaged chicken strips you buy at the store, only not as tasty. This was the only disappointing part of my meal. My hubby ordered the Chicken Parmigiane with Spaghetti. It was also a large portion. The chicken was hot and delicious. The portions were too large for us so we asked to take home the leftovers. The staff were so helpful with this. My partner and I were here for dinner last night, and oh, it was so yummy!!! I called around noon on Monday for reservations for 6. It turns out we didn't need them, but it never hurts to be sure, eh? I spoke with a girl named Holly, and although it was quite loud in the background and she was talking to others while talking to me and put me on hold twice (am thinking she picked up in the kitchen), she got our reservation down correctly. The hostess was named Emma, and she was adorable. She was friendly and had a genuine smile. Our server was Danielle, who I have had before, and she is a gem. She is also adorable, friendly, and professional. Overall, this location has superior staff. Terry is fantastic. I believe he may be a manager or something similar. Michael, who is a server, has served myself and my peeps on multiple occasions, and he is the epitome of professionalism and customer service. I believe there is also a gentleman named Felix, who is also outstanding. The food -- yummy!!! They dont' just have pasta, peeps! They have the most delicious button mushrooms for appetizers. I almost drool on myself! The shrimp are super yummy and brought to you piping hot. Caesar salads are among the best I have tried. My personal fav is the Cajun Chicken Alfredo. Tender chicken, just the right amount of Alfredo sauce... so yummy! Sadly, they dont' serve this dish at the location in West Ed mall. I have been to the west ed location a handful of times and thought it was average at best but I just came home from a visit to their downtown location and am already looking forward to my next visit. The service was nothing short of excellent considering they were dealing with a packed restaurant. Everything came out to our table well before I was expecting it too but still with enough of a break in between courses for me to enjoy my dining companion and not feel like I was being rushed out the door so they could get more customers in. The food was delicious! My caesar salad was so fresh and the dressing was great. It's kind of light and doesn't have the creamy texture that some other dressings offer but it's a nice change. When my spicy spaghetti first came out I was a little concerned because the portion looked small width wise but it did fill me up nicely as the dish had some depth to it so there was more food on the plate then what I initially thought there was. This morning, Sarah said to me, "I can't believe we ate at the Old Spaghetti Factory last night." But last night, here's how our pre-meal conversation went. Me: So what do you want to do for dinner? We have a Groupon for Khazana. Sarah: Well, I'm not really feeling like Indian food - I'm really craving Red Robin, but I don't want to take the bus there. How about the Blue Plate Diner? Me: Sure So then as we're walking from the Bay Centre to Blue Plate, we come across the Old Spaghetti Factory. Me: Oh, there's the Old Spaghetti Factory. Sarah: Well, I think it would be less expensive than Blue Plate. And you get salad, and bread, and dessert. Me: So, you want to go there, I take it. So inside the Old Spaghetti Factory we went. And it looks like every other Old Spaghetti Factory around - dated 70s-style "fern bar" decor, a large cavernous room, and dark carpets on the floor. We were quickly greeted and brought to a table by the window. Nice! The large sourdough roll, served with both Garlic and regular whipped butter was delicious, though I often fear what kinds of chemicals must be included with the "garlic butter." My minestrone soup tasted like a fairly typical, but decent can of minestrone. Vegetables were a bit mushy, but what can you expect from a free soup? This isn't Corso 32, or even the Sequel Cafe (home of awesome, reasonably priced vegetarian soups). One nice thing about the Spaghetti Factory is their inexpensive drinks. Yes, you can get a mixed drink for $5. It's not going to be particularly strong (only 1 oz. of booze), but it's guaranteed to be sugary (and pretty delicious). My lasagna tasted like frozen lasagna. It wasn't bad, but I feel as if I could have bought it at Safeway, tossed it in the oven, and melted some mozzarella cheese on top. And since I didn't feel like cooking, and the entire meal cost only $12.50 including the bread, soup, and spumoni ice cream, it strangely hit the spot. But in addition to the dated decor, a few other things about the Spaghetti Factory annoyed me. a) Our server, while very friendly, seemed a little discombobulated. I'm not sure if that has more to do with the server herself, or the management of the restaurant. b) They use that cheap metallic silverware that makes an awful sound/sensation when you brush it against your teeth in the wrong way. c) The dish in which Sarah's ice cream was served had a bit of ketchup on the bottom of it. I got some of it on my hand, which was not pleasant. While the food here beats the Olive Garden, it isn't the same sort of well-oiled machine. But it's cheap and downtown. read more

There is a decently large selection of boring pastas and spaghettis. I love Italian food but I didn't find anything too enticing on the menu. I decided on the lasagna. It was just your average run of the mill lasagna. It was really cheesy and quite salty. I like the fact you get bread, soup/salad and an ice cream all included for one price. The one thing that really struck me was the helicopter service. Our server, who was pleasant and always smiling, seemed to hover over us at all times. I know she was just trying to be friendly and helpful, but she checked on is every couple of minutes it seemed. I appreciate attentive service, but this was a bit too much. I did not have high expectations for this value chain restaurant but I was pleasantly surprised by the food (satisfactory) and the service (absolutely wonderful). Our waiter was pleasant, efficient, attentive but unobtrusive -- a rare breed! Despite it being a busy weekend evening and all the chaos at our table (5 children under the age of 5), he anticipated our every need. In fact all the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. I ordered the mussels appetizer (which turned out to be very tasty) and veggie lasagna (loads of cheese, strange addition of grated carrots, but overall, edible). Everyone in our party had a wonderful experience, which is saying something, considering how eating out with toddlers can be an ordeal. I have been to this restaurant some 6 years back and returned this week. To my surprise the quality of food was very good, with great choice of menu. Above all it was not very expensive. Some of my colleagues were skeptical about the place prior to trying. However, their opinions changed and all of them were unanimous that the food was surprisingly very good from what they expected it to be. We went as a 12 member team to eat and each one of them had a clean and empty plate as they finished their lunch. Places of this kind should be well appreciated as they are rare and required wide awareness. I am glad, I found this back to add it to my list of restaurant choice in Edmonton. Did I forget...I had vegetarian choices too and by that I don't mean eating bread (which was great tasting too), raw leaves and vegetables. :) If there is something that I should pick on for them to improve...may be a little cleaner windows. The food is good, the pasta menu is fairly extensive. Unsurprisingly they have several different variations of the "spaghetti with tomato sauce" dish; meat sauce, meatballs, baked, and several more. They also offer spaghetti as a side on most everything... possibly even spaghetti. Don't fret - they do plenty of other pasta dishes too. Fettuccine, ravioli, tortellini - and several other Italian style dishes. The service is also exemplary. The staff is friendly, prompt and accommodating. Oh, and try the French onion soup sometime. OK - the food is not amazing, but its good, the service is great and the value is great. For about $10 you can get coffee or tea, soup or salad and a pasta. When working in the downtown core, I don't know of many other lunch values that can come close. If you like pasta and are looking for value, I suggest the Old Spaghetti Factory. The restaurant has some neet touches, including an old train (or bus) car and the value is amazing. Tip: on Thurs/Fridays the lunch rush can be pretty significant, get their early to ensure you get your order in prior to the large groups that tend to eat here on these dates. read more

Food was acceptable I had the momma lasagna an she had the tortellini which came out a little watery. Overall service was nice an manager took 25 percent off bill for the tortellini miss hap. Still really like this old spagh an will deff be back. read more

With your meal you get salad/soup - main dish, unlimited bread and pop :) plus a yummy ice cream!! The only thing is that staff were super busy and stressed. They did not hide it at all, making guests feel it as well. Waitress was nice and helpful. Highly recommend! read more
