Shout out to Jeff G for introducing me to Old Scratch Pizza! We came on a Saturday night around 7pm and WOWZERS even though this spot is completely off the beaten path it. was. PACKED. Line out the door on a freezing night. The idea is that you order at the bar, grab a number, and then take your seat. I am not one for waiting - I went to grab a drink at the bar while others waited. My intention was to bring the drink back, turns out you can come in, order at the bar, and SIT THERE! The bar had MANY seats at it so I snagged four and motioned everyone over to have a seat. Again, I have no idea what the deal is with people not wanting to sit at the bar. It baffles me! We were able to order in 20 seconds after being seated. We ordered up: Margherita {V} tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, romano, olive oil for $10. Shroom {V} olive oil, roasted forest mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, roasted garlic, thyme, white truffle oil for $12.50 Angry Beekeeper tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, spicy salame, house-made hot honey, olive oil for $12 They are known for their classic pepperoni. I am a mix of personalities. I am somewhat of a purest in the case that to judge a good pizza, especially a Neapolitan style you HAVE to get the classic Margherita. And people people people - let me just tell you. I was in Italy for 12 days only a few months ago - southern italy specifically and this pizza is the closest to the Napoli pizza I have had in the states and I *actively* try to sniff it out. It was a winner and I was so glad I went with my gut, even though they said they were known for pep I had to see what the classic was all about and I'm so glad I did! Now. My next adventure: the white shroom pizza. Holy mother of god. The base was fantastic. When you say garlic I want to reek of it. The base, the cheese the mushrooms. Everything was cooked perfectly. My only complaint - when you promise truffle oil on a pizza, I want to smell it when it comes to my table. I felt like there wasn't enough to get that aroma that you love while eating a truffle pizza. Overall - still insanely delicious. Lastly, the Angry Beekeeper. Luckily someone ordered this and I got to trade them a slice for a slice and WOW. Punch you in the pallet flavors here. Love the spicy honey and they used real spicy salame. It was magical. Would I want to eat a whole pie of it? Probably not, just because the others were so, so good. But I really enjoyed the creativity and freshness on this one. Highly recommend for sharing. My only other complaint was that the cocktails were not great. Ok so maybe I shouldn't have ordered cocktails at this kind of place - but don't put them on the menu if they are not going to be well executed. I asked specifically if the margarita was made with real lime juice before I ordered it and he said yes. Fine. I thought I was in for a treat. When I got it, yes it was fresh lime, but it tasted like a bucket of orange juice. Whoever was slinging drinks that night needs to re-learn the basics. The food is absolutely 5-stars. Best Neapolitan pizza I've had in the states. But I have to give four just because I think the wait is outrageous, especially in the winter you can't have people backed all the way up outside the door, the poorly executed drinks/staff training, and the lack of truffle promised on the menu. Small things, but for all those reasons it's a STRONG 4 stars for now. read more

I was eating my okay meal when a local school on a field trip walked in. After the students got their food, one was unappetized by it so they left a negative review. This establishment responded by pointing fingers at the students they thought left the review to the students chaperone in an attempt to get the now singled out student into trouble. I find attempting to punish the students for voicing their opinion and their right of freedom of speech is very unprofessional. I will not be coming here again. read more

Pizza is great and innovative. I do not eat pork and accident got an angry bee keeper and it was delicious! Over my third slice I realized there was pepperoni in the pizza, so what did it do? I picked it off and kept on eating it. Everything I get here is great. Also, you can purchase ice cream for a good cause if you need something sweet. read more

This place is awesome! Pay at the counter and the hosts were friendly. Had the Beekeeper and the Brooklyn. Crust is amazing and toppings were just as good. Flavor combos were perfect. Just get there before 6pm, it gets busy. They have picnic tables and you eat family style. Service can be a little slow because of that but it's not the servers it's the amount of people/food being served. With good reason. You won't be disappointed. read more

Great place for quality beer and pizza. It's an open floor plan with a combination of indoor and outdoor seating, so there's a nice option for everyone. Plenty of televisions around the area, which makes it a great place to try and catch a game. The beer selection is full of both local and national brand beers, which is a nice selection for those who may be afraid to try something outside of their comfort zone. My only issue would be that there were an abundance of IPAs when we first went, but we were told they were on rotation and circumstance would have it that they were heavy on that style. That being sad, still a decent selection regardless. The pizza is great. It's a thin, Neapolitan style crust which is a nice change of pace from most other pizza places in the area. They only offer a few combinations, but they hit them out of the park. The beekeepers friends was a nice combination of sausage, peppers and hot honey. Definitely recommend this place for anyone in the mood for a light lunch and beer, or a great place to catch a game on Saturday. read more

My favorite pizza in the Dayton area. Everything about this place is fantastic. All the Pizzas, roasted cauliflower, house salad, it's all delicious. Enjoyed my visit to Old Scratch Pizza tonight after friend recommendation, we arrived just after 5pm and there were plenty of tables, but by 6pm the place was packed, standing room only. Walked in seated ourselves and reviewed the menu, once my parents were ready to order, I went up to the counter and ordered a few pizzas, the Dayton - pepperoni; the Brooklyn - tomato tomato sauce, house-made sausage and sliced meatball, fresh mozzarella, basil and olive oil and the Shroom - olive oil, roasted forest mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, roasted garlic, thyme, white truffle oil. Plus ordered the whole roasted cauliflower to share as appetizer. Then went to the bar to order a beer, they have quite a selection of craft beer on tap - local, regional, national beers. Loved they had one of my all time favorites Nosferatu on tap!!! The cauliflower appetizer arrived just a few minutes later & its a huge head of cauliflower - we started on it with the romesco sauce - we just had a few bites then our pizza's arrived fresh from the oven. The Dayton is packed with pepperoni, enjoyed the Shroom - love pizza's covered in mushrooms and the homemade sausage was good on the Brooklyn. Went there because it was recommended to me. The pizza was quite dry and undelivering. I would not choose it over a cheap pizza.

The Dayton area has no shortage of great 'za joints, so to earn a spot among the favorites is no small feat. Old Scratch completely fits the bill and deserves a spot among the greats. My husband and I stopped in on a Sunday for lunch and promptly ordered one Dayton and one Shroom. The Shroom pizza was generously topped with a variety of different mushrooms, and finished off with the perfect amount of truffle oil - of all the pizzas in all the land, this is one of the best and most memorable I've had. The Dayton was excellent as well - exactly what you want when you order a pepperoni pizza. The red sauce was salty and sweet and perfectly proportional to the amount of cheese and pepperoni, and the pepperoni crisp and bowl-like. The crust on both pizzas was flavorful and cooked well - not soggy in the slightest despite the thin nature of the dough. The interior is big, open, and industrial but warm enough to make you want to stay a while. We will be back... and soon! read more

It was ok, it's hard to screw up pizza. Toppings on the skimpy side, the edges of the crust almost crispy mostly chewy, slightly under baked. Place was busy but no one actually asked how our meal was. You pay then eat, no actual service, get your own drinks, ask for plates and silverware. No one said welcome when we got there, no one said thanks when we left. read more

I had taken a day trip to Dayton to visit the Air Force Museum with my family. As we headed out of town, we wanted to grab dinner somewhere new to us. We found Old Scratch Pizza and gave it a shot. It is in an unassuming area that appears to be mostly industrial and offices. Parking lot was small but the exterior of the building looked very fresh and new. Upon entering, you order the pizza and food at a counter. The food is delivered to your table. The tables are large wood picnic tables that invite community style seating. They recommended leaving the tab open if we wanted to order from the bar (which we did). They have a great size list of craft beer on tap which was exactly what i was hoping to find to go with our pizza. However, it seemed like Dayton beer options were limited. I actually ended up with a beer from Cincinnati. The pizza came out hot and fast. We got three different kinds and all were excellent. We did notice that they were slightly under done in the middle but learned that was intentional and true to style. However, they can cook them longer if you request when ordering. That's a great tip for the future. Overall, we would definitely check them out again. read more

TL;DR More than $40 for two ~10" pizzas and a salad is pretty outrageous in Dayton, OH. We were ready to deal with the cost, but after tasting the pizza (or rather _not_ tasting because it was so bland!), I don't know that we could have possible been more disappointed. Full Review: I have a pretty generous take on pizza. I have high standards, but I'm willing to accept that there are various dimensions of "good" when it comes to the various combinations of dough, sauce, cheese, and toppings. I prefer Dewey's or Mellow Mushroom (depending on mood) but am content with the great Little Caesar's in Centerville and even the occasional Marions or Marcos. Their value propositions are all very reasonable. That being said, I can't imagine ever returning to Old Scratch Pizza. It wasn't obvious going in that this was essentially MOD/Blaze except they bring the pizza to your table. We quickly realized we were mistaken shortly after arriving. Unlike those other venues, you don't get to _see_ any ingredients, just look at the menu on the wall and hopefully get some helpful feedback from the person at the register. We ended up ordering two pizzas, a salad, a soda, and a water. It was over $42 before a tip. So, we sit down and wait for the food to arrive. The salad was actually pretty good. Just enough dressing, good ingredients, but the dressing was a little light on flavor. This should have been our first warning. After a few more minutes the pizzas arrived. First impression was that they looked pretty good, but were definitely light on cheese. Then, we tried a couple of bites. After some discussion, sharing, and attempted amendments we came to the realization that it was some of the most flavorless food either of us had ever consumed. My wife's gluten-free crust was the one positive. It was definitely one of the better GF crusts we've had. The "house made sausage" was barely more than ground chicken or ground pork with a hint of seasoning. The sauce had no amendments whatsoever - just straight tomato puree from a can (I'm ok with that if the other components have the right flavor!). It was just so bland and flavorless. Maybe if you have enough beer or other alcoholic beverage, you can convince yourself that it's good pizza. But as a meal, the flavor was just so disappointing. We don't get to go on dates nearly as much as we'd like, so we look for special events, experiences, and meals that we're willing to pay for the uniqueness. We were ready to deal with the cost, but after tasting the pizza, I don't know that we could have possible been more disappointed. This was supposed to be a proving ground to try the food and return with our 4, mostly teen-aged children and all enjoy some pizza together. We could certainly go to a much nicer restaurant and feed all 6 of us for substantially less than what it would cost at Old Scratch. We may try it again when the south location opens, but we're going to have to distance ourselves from this memory before we try again. read more

I think that I have found my new favorite pizza joint. It may be a little premature to say that given that I have been here only once but I suspect that there will be many more repeat visits, either here at the downtown location or the one out in Miamisburg. This was on my list of places to visit but when colleagues came into town for work, they chose this place without any prompting from me. I think that it's on their list of places to go for future repeat visits as well. Awesome fresh baked pizza, either their delicious "recipes" (marinara or white sauce choices), great selection of beers on tap, super friendly people working the counters and helping out on the floor... you can't go wrong! Ample parking... my only complaint about the place is that there weren't more local craft beers on the menu. Either way, I'll be back. And you should go check it out, too! read more

Very good pizza, but the atmosphere is just plain terrible. It's loud, and echoey. The dining area reminds me of what I can only assume the mess hall in a prison is like. Not good. Definitely not cozy. Pizza was really good though, so I'll be back, but probably get it to go. read more
