As you can see, we brought plenty. There are lots of places to sit outside as well. They had a wine bar in the barn so that you didn't need to walk back up for drinks. Love this winery! It is such a relaxing winery and always has events going on for Sunday during the spring through summer. There is usually music and a food truck if you check their events calendar. Even if they don't have things going on, it is still a great place to sit back and relax in an Adirondack overlooking the water. There is a cute tire swing and plenty of grass area for kiddos to run around and play. I always enjoy getting a flight so I can enjoy several of their wines. I actually like their muscadine wines surprisingly. They also have the most amazing strawberry cake that is made with their wine! I go every year for my birthday to get a slice. In the summer, it is also nice to get a win slushy as well. The owners are always very friendly and their dogs will likely greet you as well. No beverages may be brought to the property but bring yourself a little picnic of food to enjoy with your wine. read more

OHV is our favorite vineyard in the area because of the friendly staff and the gorgeous view! The wine is great! I do love a super dark, smoky bourbon barrel wine which is hard to find, and this winery has it. I will say their wine is probably the best in the area, for my tastes! The venue features a lakeside view of Lake Thom-A-Lex with a porch overlooking the area. There is a tire swing and lots of area for kids to run around. We came by on our way home after hiking on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't busy, but they were setting up for a wedding. At no point did we fill rushed or not welcomed, even as the wedding party was taking photos. Just fantastic service all around. What we got: Wine Flight: Sangria - a little dry, but good. Didn't really get sangria too much. Shooting Start - a good sparkling wine. It is supposed to be like a sparkling moscato, but I didn't think it was anything like one, other than being a bubbly wine. Polly's Peach - Good, but not very peachy. If you handed it to me blindly, I would have never known it was a peach wine. Skinny Dippin - Definitely one of my favorites, a very good muscadine wine. Slushy Flight: Peach - good, my favorite of the four. Island Breeze - I am not a fan of coconut, so I hated this one. My husband on the other hand, loved it. Watermelon - Tasted more like cotton candy, but it was still very good. Orange Dream - It was good, definitely tasted like an orange creamsicle, but it's not really a flavor I want from a wine slushy - maybe on a hot summer day, but not in the fall. Definitely highly recommend Old Homeplace if you are in the area. They have such a wide variety of dry and sweet wines, and do a fantastic job of the wine slushies. I absolutely love Old Home place Vineyard! Everyone in Winston usually heads north or west to get wine but Old Homeplace is like the best kept secret. They have a great selection of wines from red blends, whites, to sweet muscadine, and fruit wines that are all delicious. The property is gorgeous and has a cute house, a great barn and an amazing lawn that overlooks the lake. They truly are a family business and the Stone family are super hands on and truly value their customers and ensure you have everything you need. On Sunday's they have events such as music, panthers games, and more. They invite in food trucks and other vendors to ensure their customers have all they need. I've done many NC Vineyards and I just discovered Old Homeplace. If I recall correctly, It's a relatively younger vineyard but they are a wonderful location. The wine was delicious. Sample after sample, we were surprised at the flavor and quality of their wines. Their dry wines, semi sweets and sweet wines, rival NC's elite. While we had our individual favorites, none of their wines were disappointing. The service was top level. I was there on crutches and the staff went out of their way to be accommodating. They are all about warm conversation and informed suggestions without "hard selling." Instead of customer service, we received southern hospitality. The scenery is gorgeous. The views off the deck of this quiet little slice of NC, was as relaxing as it gets. My sister flew down from NJ to tour NC vineyards with us and she agreed that Old Homeplace helped make it worth the journey. If you've never tried this location, you are missing out greatly. This is a NC must see vineyard and I'm shocked it's not higher rated. How is this place not more well known? read more

This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL place! The yard area, the lake it sits on, the barn, all of it is just beautiful! The wine is actually very good too! The mom & daughter duo behind the bar were very kind & knowledgeable as it is their business & the farm has been in their family for over 70 years. I even got to meet the grandparents- grandpa was the reason behind one of the names of the drinks, but I'll let you go to find out the very cute story! Grandma makes some amazing brownies! We'll be back in August for the Journey tribute band. I took one star away cause I think it's a little overboard to not allow you to bring your own water (especially if you're bringing your kids- it was hot & going back up to the barn for a glass each time you needed water after all the running around seemed a smidge ridiculous. Allowing them to have their hydro flasks would've been so much easier for them & kept them way more hydrated). Other than that- great great place!!! read more

I absolutely love Old Homeplace Vineyard!! The property is so cute and the tasting room is on a small house that was the original "homeplace" of the family. They have also built a beautiful barn with an additional serving bar for events. Everyone there is always so friendly and they regularly have great local musicians on Sunday afternoons. The wine is a good range from bourbon barrel aged reds, to fantastic white blends, to sweet fruit wines. They truly have a wine for everyone. Some of my personal favorites are Full Moon, Vinny's Blend (named after the owner's dog), the Riesling, and the Blackberry wines! read more

Finally got a beautiful, sunny, 70 degree day and a baby sitter! The stars aligned perfectly, which of course meant: winery! This place is very nice, located in some farmland area slightly removed from downtown Winston. My only gripe would be the approximately half a mile of gravel driveway to navigate from the street entrance to the parking area (which can get jam packed). Come early and don't bring the good Maserati... Place operates out of a house with the bar operating out of the beautiful large kitchen area. You can do a tasting inside, but you can also order from the outside window on the back deck as well as the adjacent farmhouse when it's open. Inside, they are limiting to one tasting at a time, but I definitely recommend it at $9/person. You can choose 7 wines to taste and you can also take the wine glass home. Not a bad value, especially if you're cheap like me and don't have a proper wine glass otherwise. Lace and I really like sweeter, fruity wines, and they have a nice assortment of those here along with a fairly extensive menu of other wines. Our favorites were between the Skinny Dippin' (which is apparently their most popular?) and the blackberry. We ended up drinking a bottle of the former there and getting a bottle of the latter to go! Also, make sure to get some of their strawberry wine cake! $3 for a very large slice, and it is so delicious! Grab a chair or park it on the bench, enjoy some cake, wine, live music, people watching, and maybe even check out a food stand while you're there. read more

This past Christmas week when my family was in town visiting we went to Old Home Place. I have been here before a couple of times and have always been pleased. This time was no different except the weather was a little cooler. This time they had a Malbec finally and I tried it for the first time. It did not have the deep color and earthy taste that I am used to but I did enjoy it. I ended up buying a bottle of the Homecomjng which I had before. The weather and deck were quite comfortable in the afternoon sun and then I wished I had brought something long sleeved. I have always been pleased by the atmosphere, wine, staff personality and the price and will continue to come back! read more

They're short-staffed and have employees that have terrible attitudes for them be in the hospitality industry. Go elsewhere. recently attended a wedding at the vineyard. It was a beautiful setting, to celebrate an even more beautiful couple. What wasn't pleasant was the way the owners spoke to and threatened multiple guests, who were not in any way shape or form, being belligerent or disrespectful. Both the man and woman (I'm assuming owners/couple) were down right rude for no given reason. From the moment we arrived, they hand picked our group of friends to steadily surveillance the whole night and I can promise you, we are all extremely respectful and friendly and especially to owners of any venue/place we attend. With not going into total detail of every single issue, I will also speak on the morning after when we arrived to get our vehicles. We were told that vehicles could be left overnight but had to be retrieved by 11am. No problem. We Uber'd from our hotel to the venue at arrived a couple minutes before 11:00.. only to find the gate was closed. There was a car waiting by the gate, that had a woman inside. With having no cell service, we exited our Uber and started walking to the venue which if you have visited before you will know isn't the shortest walk. Once we had walked about half way down the gravel road, 2 cars flew past us throwing gravel.. one being the car that was sitting at the gate when we arrived.. and if I'm not being mistaken, I believe it was the owners wife. (Could be wrong, but either way if you see 3 people walking down a gravel road, be respectful enough to not haul butt literally on their heels) The food was really good, and the barn and outside setting was beautiful but the hospitality was not there and it showed. read more

We visited this vineyard on their third weekend open. At that time they had three dry whites (including a yummy dry Riesling), two dry reds (a merlot and a meritage), and five sweet wines. There are more wines of all kinds on the way. Both of the Reds were really great), but I also enjoyed the strawberry wine. They don't have meals, but they do have brownies, crackers and some great local pimento cheese. The hosts were very pleasant and welcoming. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. What a great surprise this Vineyard was. Went to see a friend play music and fell in love with the vineyard too. The wine was fantastic, with lots of reds and white wines to chose from. It is set on a beautiful lake and just so peaceful . The other side is rolling green pastures that is just picturesque. It's a 35 minute drive from my house, but well worth the extra drive. The owners came by multiple times to check on us and see how we were doing. See ya there soon. read more

Love the tasting room, love the location on the lake and love the owners. The wines are super good for a first year. My only suggestion is I am not a fan of the stop pours. They often give about one and a half sips and not even Napa does that anymore. I just feel for the price of a tasing you should get a bit more. Take it or leave it, that is my opinion. Most places no longer do it or they have a large quantity stop poor. They have an amazing wine club that give you a free glass of wine on Sundays if you are a member. I wish this couple good luck and hope to be back soon. The event space looks like it will be amazing. You might want to think of some fire pits in the future for cold days, that would be cook. Perhaps the wines are good, and the setting is picturesque... I will never know. I called ahead to be sure that they were open as newly advertised on Thursdays from 11 until 6 pm. I drove half an hour, and arrived at 5:30 only to find the gate locked. I called and was curtly told by David that there were no customers at the winery, and that they do not do tastings after 5:30. (I was not told this on the phone, nor is there any mention of this on the website.) David spoke to me as if I should've known this (how?) and said that his daughter had a soccer game. After telling him I did not think this was very good customer service to have the gate locked and be closed 30 minutes before their advertised close time, he very unenthusiastically said that he would come meet me. No thanks. A winery experience should be pleasant and one should feel welcomed! I told him I would take my money elsewhere, as I had come to buy a gift certificate...to which he responded... "Fine". "Please come back to see us; the next wine tasting is on us" ... or even just a simple, but sincere "I'm so sorry for the inconvenience!" would have made all difference. Obviously this winery does not need my business, and they certainly will not be getting it. If you are going to extend your hours to enlarge your customer base and accessibility, then please be committed to being open as advertised. read more

Visited for Sunday Funday. The staff were very friendly even through it was raining outside the music was inside.
