Beautiful tasting room and grounds this winery owned by Richard Childress of NASCAR fame is well known in this area. We came on a busy Saturday and the pourer said this was how it was when it was a race day down in Charlotte. People were bringing their little kids along with them to get their wine on before the race....yikes. The tasting room was nice as I said, large and full of wine to purchase and swag to buy. There were a number of different places in the tasting room (building), I think I counted five places you in different parts of the building you could taste wine. There is a bistro in a separate building, it seemed okay, we didn't get food. The wine was decent, but not stellar, so that is the four instead of five star from me. I visited this place as a surprise and upon arrival, it's obvious that grounds are well kept year-round. It's a beautiful vineyard and I was super excited to explore and walk around. After being greeted in the main building, we were directed to enjoy the scenic route or walk directly towards the back of the building to enjoy the live music. There's an open space behind the main building with a small stage to enjoy live music, or if you're more a bookworm like myself you can grab a chair near the small lake. I enjoyed lunch in the Bistro (it was an earlier lunch because they were closing earlier for a private event - it's a beautiful space so I can see why) - the lunch menu offered a variety of items of if you're just interested in dessert, then you can grab something from the front and enjoy the weather. This beautiful place could easily get crowded on a weekend so I'd recommend reservations, just to ensure that you have a table without the wait. I decided to go with a wrap with grilled chicken and it was seasoned just right and was complimented with the perfect amount of fries. But the highlight of my lunch (besides the wine, lol) was the sweet tea - as a southerner, it hit the spot. A private tour was scheduled for me and that's probably where I made up my mind that I'd be back to visit this place. The tour guide was personable and she knew her stuff. Not to mention, I was able to enjoy fresh grapes from the vineyard (yum!). I fell in love with a couple of their signature wines, so I grabbed a couple of bottles from the gift shop - it's also offers a great opportunity to grab a few gifts for family and friends. I'd recommend this place for an easy Saturday or Sunday as it's great way to relax and recharge - but if you're feeling inclined to stay there's a hotel available near the vineyards (walking distance). Returned here for a Graduation lunch with 14 people at The Bistro at Childress. Our server did a wonderful job keeping up with everyone. The food was delicious and came out timely. We had quite a variety from the menu and everyone was happy. We had glasses of wine and flights of wine. We were there for my husby birthday- I booked the bistro table in advance but was a lil disappointed it wasn't ready. We were able to get a few vegan options which was great, I really wish we could have a vegan dessert but there was none. The food although was really great - we had couscous with veggies and vegan burrito with sun kissed peach wine and reisling wine and loved peach that I ended up bringing a bottle home. We visited the Bistro, which is temporarily in the Terrace while the flooring is replaced in the original location. Tonight was the best we've experienced! It's never been bad, but tonight all the stars aligned and everything was on point! The manager is very professional, the servers are exceptional, and the food and wine....delectable! We had a bottle of the Jewel Soft White and started with the pimento cheese dip served with pork rinds. The Hubster had Braised Short ribs and I had the Petite Salmon. Perfect size servings for us. I actually like the Bistro being located in the Terrace. It felt "cozy". I'm sure it was difficult for the staff but they didn't show it. So happy with our visit overall!. read more

I held my Mothers 70th birthday in the Barrel Room. My Mother is a veteran who served this country during various conflicts such as Vietnam. We were told when we booked the room we could use the PA system to play her old school music. Once we were there we were told we could not because it would feed into the restaurant. I was asked for proof when I complained..we were in front of the camera. My son was told they didn't have water when he asked for it, but he could have tea. How do you deny water to a child? How do you make tea without water? Again in front of the camera. I was not told about that till we were gone. They asked at my guests and I the entire 3 hours. I could go on and on about the treatment but I will just continue to share my story. I don't recommend this place regardless of how beautiful it is and how good the food is.​ read more

This was really cool and pretty big. If I were to strategize, I'd say definitely make a reservation and plan ahead - check a few days before - to have the best experience. We decided to pop in on a Saturday, and at that point, tours had been booked up for the day, as well as the bistro. We sat outside to listen to music, and they had a little snack bar at out there with a limited selection of wine and snacks. We then enjoyed a tasting in the gift shop. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, and it was an enjoyable experience. A group from my work goes here throughout the year for various occasions. We went for my birthday a few months ago and just celebrated another birthday today. They are so nice and will put chocolates and a card on the table for the birthday boy/girl. We love to share the Pimento Cheese Dip with Pork Rinds. I tried Austin's (can't completely remember what it's called?) Chicken Sandwich with wedges and it was so yummy! The restaurant is beautiful and feels so fancy when you go. It's more expensive than your regular lunch spots, but it's worth every cent. We had a lovely server named Krista and she was excellent! Such a grand place! Visited on a sunday with two of my friends. We had made advanced online reservations for their "Luxe Wine Tasting" you get to choose 6 wines of your choosing to taste out of the 10 they offer. Our hostess was super attentive and gave us great knowledge on all of the wines we chose and what food options pair well with the wines we were tasting. Now ot does has this wine tasting is 60min but make note, it can def go over. They are not kicking you out after one hour. They let you take your time and enjoy the wines which I thought was great. You can really enjoy your time, catching up while sampling wine at your own pace and not have to chug it all down. Grand house with a lovely room to enjoy the wines. Afterwards had reservations at the Bistro which was a big grand room. Ordered their pasta, salmon and chicken Greek salad. All tasted Devine and had no complaints! Sat outside afterwards on their many patio chairs and tables. We did not go into their gift shop which I am sad about but that just means another wine tasting coming soon! A beautiful estate vineyard, with tasting room, bistro and retail shop. This chateau is quite expansive and the grounds are amazing. All of the staff we encountered were friendly, and the lady that poured our flight was kind and knowledgeable. Came here for Mother's Day. My 1st visit here. This was soo good! It's located right off of the highway, but at the same time its hidden away, so when you enter its unexpected. The grounds are really maintained well. The inside is just as beautiful with picturesque views of the vineyard. There's a lake with sitting areas, a gazebo for events, a bistro, a souvenir store with a variety of great items and a mini bakery. They do offer a membership if you visit often. I haven't looked into what that includes but it's a great place to frequent. You also have the option of visiting without a reservation/membership for tastings. They had live music as well. One of my favorite wineries around, Childress never disappoints! There's a lot to do, I've never had the chance to try their bistro but I will eventually. Their wine is stellar, I love their tastings they cost about $20 and you get 4 pours and you get to keep the glasses too! The service is pretty quick they keep the place well staffed. This time around I got their sweet wine flight and their mimosa flight which is seasonal and they also have seasonal slushie flavors! And the scenery is breathtaking, from the moment you drive in and go through the vineyards leading up to the building, it's an experience to behold. I have been to Childress many times before and have enjoyed each time. This time I came in for a reservation for 9 people at 11:30AM. We arrived maybe 11:25AM. This reservation was made 2 months in advance. When we got there there was no table set for 9. I asked where our table would be and the host said they will add another chair to the head of the table to accommodate 9 and set one of their long tables (meant for 8). I told her 2 people at the head wouldn't work (2 at the head of the table???) and if they could do something else. I suggested adding one more chair to the long side and it may be ok. We did as such and made it work. They set the table and we eventually sat down. One side of the table felt extremely crammed due to that 4th chair so we asked if we could use the table next to us to make it more spacious, they agreed and moved things mid brunch. This was a bridal brunch and was unfortunate that all of these small hiccups occurred. They could have thought this out prior to us arriving and also could have been more prepared. Service was good, server was nice and patient with all the girls. Food was ok. Penne pasta was last luster and my burger was dry. They could have been understaffed but unsure as I did see quite a few workers. read more

Such a nice vineyard! The wine was tasty and very reasonable priced. Their most popular drinks are the slushies! They have 8ish flavors and all are super delicious. We had a quick lunch at the lower patio's counter and it was surprisingly good quality for pre-made wraps. We all got chicken Caesar salad wraps with chips. This is my 2nd time visiting the vineyard and it's even more beautiful the second time around. Staff was absolutely the best, as always. This was my 1st time eating at the bistro and it was chefs kiss. I recommend the fried shrimp devil eggs as an appetizer. We got done with brunch a little early and had over an hour before our wine tasting started, so we visited the indoor gift shop then headed to the pond to sit and listen to the live music. Great experience and the air smelled like a fresh summer breeze. This would be a wonderful date night, girls outing or anniversary/wedding. Had the wonderful opportunity to visit this vineyard this weekend for a wine tasting. Our sommelier Roxanne was wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable on the wines. We had the opportunity to taste 6 wines out of a choice of 12 that ranged from sweet to dry. I love that each one had a different story. Great views of the lake there is a bistro near as well if you would like to partake in a meal after having a bottle of wine. Their apparel store was very nice with a wide variety of things to choose from hats to jewelry. The tasting consisted of 6 wines from a select list. Lori educated on the grape, the harvest, the process time, the tannins, the food pairing before making our selection. If you don't know what to taste, she will offer great choices based on your pallet. The Vineyard is grand, really pretty. We did not take a tour, but I will return for a tour. They have a bistro, a wine slushy bar, and a store. If you go for a tasting, and not hungry for one of the charcuterie boards they offer you to purchase with the wine tasting, you can get a small charcuterie board from the store for $19.99 and under based on size. Absolutely stunning winery, and so spacious! Try and go during November or December to enjoy the beautiful Christmas decorations. There are several things to do on property from 3 different tastings to flights to live music to two separate dining experiences. The tasting bars are huge! I thoroughly enjoyed the gift shop with tons of unique gifts, something for everyone! The staff is also extremely kind and welcoming, especially Deana who made us feel right at home. Of the many vineyards in the area, this isn't my top choice. The wine here is average tasting for my tastes, but they do have a multitude of options. The inside and outside area are gorgeous, featuring a small pond and lots of outdoor seating. So if you're looking for a beautiful area with good seating, you'll like this spot. It has been a few years since I have eaten in the bistro, but I remember the food being very good with the sweet potato fries being exceptional! In our last visit there, I was unimpressed with the wine bottle service. I bought a cold bottle of Sauvignon blanc to share with a friend and upon asking for a bucket of ice, we were informed that it was a $5 charge to get a bucket of ice! This really shocked me and seemed a bit tacky to not provide an ice bucket for white wine that needs to be enjoyed cold. My Daughter and I went there on 3/17and we did the Luxe Wine Tasting. When we arrived at the vineyard we did not have a reservation but they were more than happy to accommodate us. We were able to pick 6 out of 12 wine to try and found several that we liked. So much so that we bought 6 bottles of wine. The woman that did the tasting, sorry I forget her name, was very knowledgeable about the wine and was able to help us pick wines that we would like. The vineyard is beautiful and well kept even in winter. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I will definitely be doing it again. read more

I learned today during a week day in winter there is a small staff to wait on customers at the Bistro. I get it. But when an unexpected warm weather comes to the area for several days the Bistro can't accommodate the additional guest. We had to seek food elsewhere. Update 11/07/23: We went to Childress to grab a late lunch/early dinner in the bistro and some wine this past Saturday. We arrived there at 4 pm and got parked and to the bistro by 4:11. I know the specific time because the waitress told us their last orders are taken at 4:30 but they don't sit anyone after 4. So, I looked at my watch. We had no clue about this cutoff time, and I asked if they would just allow us to have the pimento cheese plate with crackers. I explained we did not know of the 4 p.m. cutoff, and we drove an hour and a half to get here and asked for the exception this once for 11 minutes. She said she would get the manager and ask. I told her there was no need, it was fine and we would leave. However, she still got the manager who came out. Since she was there, I repeated what I had told the waitress and the manager said she wouldn't allow us to eat. This is the same one who was nonchalant about the ants on our table. We thanked her and left. But, honestly, with a lower opinion of this place than before. We will still come here for wine, but we will not be going to be bistro again nor would I recommend it. Yes, we were there 11 minutes after the cutoff. But we were off-put by the impression we were not very important. Plus, the fact they had few customers, we didn't want a dish that needed cooking, and we drove a long way to get there all just added up to us. ========================== This review will cover our three trips to Childress Winery. The main building closer to the parking lot is the winery. There you can do tastings, a tour, and visit the gift shop. Behind that is an open courtyard area. It has a bistro and a bar serving wine slushies and bottled beer. The grounds are immaculate and the views are spectacular. The visual appeal is stunning and worth the trip. We took a wine tour and it was OK. we saw the facilities and such, but I don't think we would do it again. I don't regret we did it one time, but that was enough. The gift shop has row after row of wine down the middle with miscellaneous gifts around the walls. We got some wine and a few other things that of course we could not live without :-) The bistro has good food. The time we ate there, though, we sat at a table on the patio and ants were all over our table. I showed the manager of the bistro and she basically said that's part of what you might get when you eat outside. Sorry, but a line of ants going up the leg of the table and covering the top is not what I consider acceptable. That she was not the least bit apologetic was the killer. The second time we were there it was for a music of the 90s and 2000s event in the evening. Now that was fun. It even rained a bit while we were there. At first, everyone sought shelter, but once there was no lightning and the wind died down, nobody cared about the rain. The party spun back up, the band played again and people were out dancing in the rain. It was really crazy and fun. We had purchased a VIP table for four even though there were just 2 of us and that was fine. We had a great spot right up front on the lawn, looking at the stage and area in front of it where everyone was dancing. We even made some friends there who we are still friends with today and see quite often. Overall, here is a summary of our three trips. * The food at the bistro was good but the service doesn't live up to the image they are presenting for the facility. * The wine tour is so-so. Don't stress over taking it, but if you do, it's ok. * The wine they make is good and there is a broad variety. * The gift shop has some nice things in it as well as all of their wines * We did not do one of the tastings so I cannot comment on those.
