Popped in for an afternoon cocktail with my wife. Broad Branch has some cool specialty and seasonal cocktails. The place has a nice cool, chill vibe. The bartender knows his stuff. Worth a visit.

After running a few errands and enjoying the weather, I decided that I would go downtown for a drink instead of going home for the evening. I was headed to Fiddlin Fish, but I saw the gem of a spot and decided to pop in here first. The bar tenders were super friendly. They greeted me upon entry. It was almost 7pm. They weren't very busy. There were a few folks lounging and charring in their casual seating area and a few ladies at the bar. The esthetic was just what I would expect from a craft cocktail bar at a whisky distillery. It was woody and warm. Very masculine, but still sof and comfortable. After chatting with the bartender and the other ladies at the bar k went with the Blood Moon Orange drink that was made with their Big Winston Bourbon. The Bourbon just didn't allow me to taste the blood orange syrup. The bar tenders added a little extra syrup. It help a little but still Bourbon likes all of the attention and was NOT trying to share the spotlight. I will say that this was one of the smoothest bourbons I've ever experienced. No bite in the finish. They do have a daily drink special and last night it was margaritas. The ladies I was chatting with got one of those and said that they enjoyed it. While they of course serve their own spirits, they offer a variety of others. Just ask! I will be back and would recommend this was a mature adults night out! Great vibes!

I visited Broad Branch for drinks and to catch up with a friend and I enjoyed the entire experience. The space was welcoming with plenty of room to hang out, lounge and relax and a full bar you can hang out at. They also have a wonderful tasting room where we had the opportunity to enjoy a whiskey tasting led by one of their amazing staff members. The staff member was very knowledgeable about the history of the space and the whiskey they distill and was very nice and generous with his time. The selection of spirits were impressive and I will definitely return for another drink and to explore more of their whiskey cocktails. Add it to the favorites list!

Really loved this distillery in the heart of Winston Salem. They have a few different spirits but whiskey was the standout! We were able to taste several of the whiskies and left with a few bottles. They have an awesome tasting room and Blake was a great guide! They also have a really cool cocktail bar next door (the rye old fashioned was excellent). Can't recommend enough!

Nothing but good things go say about this place. We were able to do a tasting and Blake took excellent care of us. We purchased a few bottles as well. I can't wait to go back to try the cocktail bar! Thanks again!

We popped in here just to check it out cause we've never been in here before, but we've been to fiddlin fish a million times. So, with that being said, this place is actually amazing, the staff member that was running us through the spirits was extremely knowledgeable and extremely welcoming. He gave us the complete run down on everything involved in the creation of their spirits and then allowed us to try what we wanted, instead of making us taste what they want. I am not a whiskey drinker at all, but I ended up buying a bottle of their wood exploration (absolutely amazing!!!)! The atmosphere is super relaxed and they are extremely welcoming. We look forward to going back and trying their mixed drinks.

Had an amazing time. Broad Branch was beautiful. The staff were AWESOME . Very welcoming and didn't mind answering questions. Very clean and organized. Everyone was perfectly balanced with fun and professional. Highly recommended even if you don't drink, the experience is 100% worth it. Thank you all for an amazing experience.

MY 400TH YELP REVIEW! WHOOHOO! Although I love visiting distilleries when I travel, it's nice sometimes to have a "home game." I had toured Broad Branch Distillery in Winston-Salem, North Carolina once before (for a Yelp event), but when my family was visiting from California recently I visited again. We didn't get a full tour the second time, but distiller Joe did take us into the working part of the facility where they were distilling at the time. There's nothing quite like the taste of fresh distillate off the still. Although they are now making rye whiskey and rum and other spirits, the first product I had from Broad Branch when it first came out in 2015 was the Nightlab 1.0. According to Joe, this is made in the style of North Carolina distiller Frank Williams who passed the recipe on to Broad Branch. The mashbill includes corn, rye, malted barley, hops, and sugar. Whether you get a tour or not (cost is $10 and includes a tasting -- check the distillery website for the current schedule), a tasting is in order on any visit. Our group tried everything on offer, which included Night Lab unaged whiskey, Smashing Violet (Night Lab infused with blueberries), Rye Fidelity (Rye-Fi), Sungrazer rum, and Nobilium whiskey (their base spirit aged for 2 years in European oak barrels). Since I already own the Night Lab and Smashing Violet (and too much rye and rum), I took the opportunity to take home the last available bottle of "Supercollider," a.k.a., "The Big Blend Theory." (Thanks to my brother-in-law Wayne for buying this for me!) According to Broad Branch, this is a "collision between 100% WA State Rye Whiskey and fresh Honey Crisp and Fuji apples, mashed and fermented together, then distilled. Rested in new oak and finished in brandy barrels, the result is a delicious, refined spirit with gentle flavors of cooked fruit, maple, and spice." Having now tasted the Supercollider, I have to agree with their description. Delicious straight up, on the rocks, or as part of any fruity, whiskey-based cocktail.

We stumbled upon Broad Branch Distillery somewhat by accident, but I have no doubt we'll be back! Ayyoub was so welcoming, knowledgeable and fun! We tried several of the cocktails and they were equally beautiful and delicious! They have an awesome, spacious area with outdoor seating as well

I had an absolute blast today visiting Sutler's Spirit Company! The owner, Scot Sanborn, his wife,…read moreDana, and their sweet distillery dog, Moose were so welcoming, entertaining and down right nice! The inside has a very rustic, industrial but yet modern twist with everything copper, stainless steel or natural wood. All of the pillows, chair cushions and even the bed for Moose were made from vintage US Mail bags, which was unique and also the pillows had Sutler's name! The lights were hanging across the ceiling with candles lit in lanterns to give a very relaxing ambiance. The walls lined with barrels aging rum and natural wood and stainless steel tables. They even have a custom skateboard made in collaboration with Exodus Skate Shop! The name of the distillery came from the era of the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, when the "Sutlers" were traveling merchants that had tents and sold the soldiers "spirits" to drink such as gin. This goes back 200 years! This being said, Sutler's Spirit Company is the first legal distillery in Winston Salem and makes each batch of gin and rum with their own recipes and by hand! They even use NC locally grown herbs such as coriander, lavender, juniper berries, Angelica root and dill seed! They make rum in a large copper still and the gin in a stainless steel still so the herbs don't alter the rum flavor. They use natural molasses in place of sugar cane because it can't be grown here and age the rum in bourbon barrels to get a nice, Amber color! The process takes anywhere from a couple weeks for gin to at least 3 months to age the rum! It was captivating to hear not only how they got started, but also how intense the process is... Over 4-5 "cuts" to get the final drink! They use handpicked ceramic bottles with their custom labels and hand cork and seal each batch! The best thing was they even let you grab an empty bottle, rinse it and fill and cork your very own if you like! When we got to taste the gin and rum, I was delighted and very pleased! The rum was smooth, and gave you a little warmth as it went down. It was very clean, yet a little bite at the end... Honestly the first rum I would just sip vs mix! The gin, served "on the rocks", with either a squeeze of fresh lemon or fresh lime juice ...simple, yet smooth and dry with subtle hints of the herbs... The best part was it didn't have that "burn or rubbing alcohol flavor" you get with vodka! The hint of lime provided a nice citrus note and I could sip this as well vs mix it with anything! If you prefer, they'll serve it with tonic as well. They let you keep your rocks glass and also sell bottles, but can only sell one bottle per person per year due to law. They also have handmade, custom souvenirs such as copper shot glasses, copper mugs, shirts and leather bound flasks! Even Moose had a barrel on his collar! They are part of the Craft Distillers Trail and stamp your distillery passport with their wax seal to show you've been and inside it shows every distillery in NC so make sure to take it to each location! Sutler's Spirit Company is located in downtown Winston Salem beside Hoots and The Porch and a definite must!

The Sutler's Spirit tour was my first experience visiting a distillery, and I left with more…read moreknowledge than I ever expected to gain and a yearning to visit more of the distilleries in our state! Sutler's is located in a small renovated warehouse type building which it shares with a restaurant and brewery. I really liked the way the distillery had been decorated as it had a laid back, cozy feel too it with, of course, many wooden barrels. The roaming of the owner's dog Moose also helped to give off a homey sort of feel as we learned about the liquor business. The owner did an excellent job of teaching us about Sutler's Spirit's and how they do things, while also educating us on the industry as a whole. It was very eye opening to learn about the hurdles to getting a product in this industry to market as well as some of the short cuts that can be taken (and how to spot some of the "distilleries" that take these shortcuts). I found it particularly interesting that the distillery itself cannot even sell its own drinks to tour goers (they can give a sample of the products). Luckily, the brewery next door is glad to sell you a drink and will let you carry it on the tour. Hopefully as the distillery industry matures in North Carolina some of the laws will be relaxed a little to encourage more industry growth. As of just a few months ago, Sutler's is now allowed to sell one bottle per person per year, which is certainly a good start. As for the liquor itself, Gin is the only product that Sutler's currently has on the market. Although, they are already working on their next product, Rum. I must admit that I am not a huge Gin fan, but I really did enjoy the Sutler's Gin. It does not have nearly as strong of a Juniper flavor as most Gins that I have tried, but has many different flavors from the botanicals that it is distilled with. The bottle is also unique as it is a super heavy ceramic bottle. This certainly sets it apart in the store and gives it the top shelf look it deserves. Overall, I would highly recommend the tour or Sutlers Spirits if you are looking for something different and out of the norm to do with friends. You will certainly learn a lot, taste some great Gin, and even get a glass to take home with you to drink your Sutler's Gin out of!

She also does the ghost tours in Mt Airy and we can't wait to go back and have her show us around downtown! The actual tasting after the tour was the most bang for your buck. We had the BEST time at Mayberry Spirits. This is probably the best distillery tour I've ever done…read more Our tour guide, Kate, was everything you'd want in a guide! She was extremely knowledgeable, personable, tons of personality and completely informative. I loved how they have a board showing the boiling points of the components in their spirits and they had tons of visuals (the sorghum they use in their whisky, two jars of different proof whisky that demonstrated the difference in appearance when shaken, pieces of the barrel components) it was very interactive, informative and fun! We were there a little early, so we got cocktails (which come with popcorn!) I love that they do have the cocktail option, because many distilleries offer only the spirits stand-alone (I can't hang) and I enjoyed the Dutch Apple Pie I ordered. I appreciated they even went a step further with super nice presentation of the drinks! You can take your cocktails into the distillery room and sip while you enjoy the tour. After the tour, we went back to the main area for a tasting! This was a treat. They have ample areas for the 4 groups doing the tour to taste. Our group of 5 gathered round the barrel to embark on the tasting. It has cute little Mayberry Spirits shot glasses already placed for us, along with a dump bucket & water. First, we tasted the 3 spirits stand-alone. I don't really like straight alcohol, but I enjoyed the vanilla whisky. After those, it's not over! We got to try several cocktail shooters. Some with Cheerwine, some with bitters (they had tons of flavors, everyone got to pick their flavor and add their own!) I really enjoyed the concoctions they presented! They had so many great gifts for purchase as well! They offer cocktail kits that include their spirits and all the necessary mixers! We all agreed we want to come back to get Christmas gifts! I was completely shocked at the value of what we got at Mayberry Spirits! The cocktails were $10 across the board - super reasonable, especially considering the quality/presentation. The tour and tasting was $12 total! I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was $20 considering the great 20-30 minute tour we got and the generous tasting, PLUS the souvenir shot glass! This was such a fun experience and a great place to go with a group!
