I had an absolute blast today visiting Sutler's Spirit Company! The owner, Scot Sanborn, his wife,…read moreDana, and their sweet distillery dog, Moose were so welcoming, entertaining and down right nice! The inside has a very rustic, industrial but yet modern twist with everything copper, stainless steel or natural wood. All of the pillows, chair cushions and even the bed for Moose were made from vintage US Mail bags, which was unique and also the pillows had Sutler's name! The lights were hanging across the ceiling with candles lit in lanterns to give a very relaxing ambiance. The walls lined with barrels aging rum and natural wood and stainless steel tables. They even have a custom skateboard made in collaboration with Exodus Skate Shop! The name of the distillery came from the era of the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, when the "Sutlers" were traveling merchants that had tents and sold the soldiers "spirits" to drink such as gin. This goes back 200 years! This being said, Sutler's Spirit Company is the first legal distillery in Winston Salem and makes each batch of gin and rum with their own recipes and by hand! They even use NC locally grown herbs such as coriander, lavender, juniper berries, Angelica root and dill seed! They make rum in a large copper still and the gin in a stainless steel still so the herbs don't alter the rum flavor. They use natural molasses in place of sugar cane because it can't be grown here and age the rum in bourbon barrels to get a nice, Amber color! The process takes anywhere from a couple weeks for gin to at least 3 months to age the rum! It was captivating to hear not only how they got started, but also how intense the process is... Over 4-5 "cuts" to get the final drink! They use handpicked ceramic bottles with their custom labels and hand cork and seal each batch! The best thing was they even let you grab an empty bottle, rinse it and fill and cork your very own if you like! When we got to taste the gin and rum, I was delighted and very pleased! The rum was smooth, and gave you a little warmth as it went down. It was very clean, yet a little bite at the end... Honestly the first rum I would just sip vs mix! The gin, served "on the rocks", with either a squeeze of fresh lemon or fresh lime juice ...simple, yet smooth and dry with subtle hints of the herbs... The best part was it didn't have that "burn or rubbing alcohol flavor" you get with vodka! The hint of lime provided a nice citrus note and I could sip this as well vs mix it with anything! If you prefer, they'll serve it with tonic as well. They let you keep your rocks glass and also sell bottles, but can only sell one bottle per person per year due to law. They also have handmade, custom souvenirs such as copper shot glasses, copper mugs, shirts and leather bound flasks! Even Moose had a barrel on his collar! They are part of the Craft Distillers Trail and stamp your distillery passport with their wax seal to show you've been and inside it shows every distillery in NC so make sure to take it to each location! Sutler's Spirit Company is located in downtown Winston Salem beside Hoots and The Porch and a definite must!

The Sutler's Spirit tour was my first experience visiting a distillery, and I left with more…read moreknowledge than I ever expected to gain and a yearning to visit more of the distilleries in our state! Sutler's is located in a small renovated warehouse type building which it shares with a restaurant and brewery. I really liked the way the distillery had been decorated as it had a laid back, cozy feel too it with, of course, many wooden barrels. The roaming of the owner's dog Moose also helped to give off a homey sort of feel as we learned about the liquor business. The owner did an excellent job of teaching us about Sutler's Spirit's and how they do things, while also educating us on the industry as a whole. It was very eye opening to learn about the hurdles to getting a product in this industry to market as well as some of the short cuts that can be taken (and how to spot some of the "distilleries" that take these shortcuts). I found it particularly interesting that the distillery itself cannot even sell its own drinks to tour goers (they can give a sample of the products). Luckily, the brewery next door is glad to sell you a drink and will let you carry it on the tour. Hopefully as the distillery industry matures in North Carolina some of the laws will be relaxed a little to encourage more industry growth. As of just a few months ago, Sutler's is now allowed to sell one bottle per person per year, which is certainly a good start. As for the liquor itself, Gin is the only product that Sutler's currently has on the market. Although, they are already working on their next product, Rum. I must admit that I am not a huge Gin fan, but I really did enjoy the Sutler's Gin. It does not have nearly as strong of a Juniper flavor as most Gins that I have tried, but has many different flavors from the botanicals that it is distilled with. The bottle is also unique as it is a super heavy ceramic bottle. This certainly sets it apart in the store and gives it the top shelf look it deserves. Overall, I would highly recommend the tour or Sutlers Spirits if you are looking for something different and out of the norm to do with friends. You will certainly learn a lot, taste some great Gin, and even get a glass to take home with you to drink your Sutler's Gin out of!

The small sitting area also houses their original small still they currently produce their gin in. Pretty cool piece of history. So about the juice...They're really got some good stuff. You can do a curated flight for 10 dollars each pour, you can also do single pours of whatever they have available as well from their core products to the single barrels. I really love what they're doing with the "Story" line where they experiment with different finishes and blends. I'm not a huge rye guy but they are certainly doing it right. That says a lot for me to grab 2 to take home of their rye single barrels..my bartender was so cool and knowledgeable I even grabbed the one he actually picked. Overall 10/10. They're giving the bigger names a definite run for their money. You will not go wrong supporting and drinking local with them. Hands down the best in the charlotte area. They do offer shipping but, you NEED to go in for the full experience and the option to grab distillery exclusive bottles. #Foodierunner approved lol

We had paid in advance and made it just in the nick of time to join our group of about a dozen people. The crowd was a mix of adults and children; personally, I didn't quite understand the presence of kids on a jailhouse and whiskey tour, but the group was ready to dive into the history. The tour kicked off with chilling news of hauntings. Our guide mentioned that the show "Ghost Hunters" had even visited the site, certifying the old jail as haunted--though fortunately by "friendly" spirits. The sensory experience was a bit of a rollercoaster. I generally enjoy the scent of bourbon, and the initial aroma upon entering the distillery is quite pleasant. However, the main room where we spent a significant portion of the tour had a scent that was overwhelming and wholly unpleasant. That said, the content of the tour was good. It provided a well-balanced mix of intriguing historical facts about the prison and the technical side of whiskey making. The kids got restless during the tour and actually started brutally kicking each other in the shins. They each had on shell toed Crocs, so you could hear the crunch of bone and flesh beneath each kick. Their parents let it go on indefinitely. The hour passed quickly and was well worth the $14 adult admission. The tasting at the end is not for the faint of heart. They serve hard liquor, and I do mean HARD. My lips were numbing and my face was next. I had to tap out after the third swig! On the bright side, the gift shop is fantastic. They have the most darling items; we walked away with two tote bags and a delicious pink lemonade drink that will be perfect for sharing with friends this summer. This is a unique, affordable way to spend an hour, provided you can handle the heat and the high proof!

Their cocktails were abundant and there was a wide variety for every palate. You can get a cocktail to sip on throughout the tour as well as some popcorn to munch on. Kate was SUPERB at explaining the history of Mayberry Spirits as well as the distilling process at their facility. She also does the ghost tours in Mt Airy and we can't wait to go back and have her show us around downtown! The actual tasting after the tour was the most bang for your buck. We got to taste all all of their whiskeys that they make in house and then we got to play around and mix them with an assortment of bitters and juices. We got to taste an assortment of six for only $12! Lastly their gift shop is the cutest if you need a birthday/Christmas gift. We want to visit again just to bring home one of their cocktail kits. We are so glad we made Mayberry Spirits the first stop during our Mt Airy day to get the party started. A cheap and awesome way to spend the day!

We had the BEST time at Mayberry Spirits. This is probably the best distillery tour I've ever done…read more Our tour guide, Kate, was everything you'd want in a guide! She was extremely knowledgeable, personable, tons of personality and completely informative. I loved how they have a board showing the boiling points of the components in their spirits and they had tons of visuals (the sorghum they use in their whisky, two jars of different proof whisky that demonstrated the difference in appearance when shaken, pieces of the barrel components) it was very interactive, informative and fun! We were there a little early, so we got cocktails (which come with popcorn!) I love that they do have the cocktail option, because many distilleries offer only the spirits stand-alone (I can't hang) and I enjoyed the Dutch Apple Pie I ordered. I appreciated they even went a step further with super nice presentation of the drinks! You can take your cocktails into the distillery room and sip while you enjoy the tour. After the tour, we went back to the main area for a tasting! This was a treat. They have ample areas for the 4 groups doing the tour to taste. Our group of 5 gathered round the barrel to embark on the tasting. It has cute little Mayberry Spirits shot glasses already placed for us, along with a dump bucket & water. First, we tasted the 3 spirits stand-alone. I don't really like straight alcohol, but I enjoyed the vanilla whisky. After those, it's not over! We got to try several cocktail shooters. Some with Cheerwine, some with bitters (they had tons of flavors, everyone got to pick their flavor and add their own!) I really enjoyed the concoctions they presented! They had so many great gifts for purchase as well! They offer cocktail kits that include their spirits and all the necessary mixers! We all agreed we want to come back to get Christmas gifts! I was completely shocked at the value of what we got at Mayberry Spirits! The cocktails were $10 across the board - super reasonable, especially considering the quality/presentation. The tour and tasting was $12 total! I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was $20 considering the great 20-30 minute tour we got and the generous tasting, PLUS the souvenir shot glass! This was such a fun experience and a great place to go with a group!
