If you love mountain views, a good history lesson, and a delicious bevy, let Mayberry Spirits be your first stop along your Pilot Mountain tour. Their cocktails were abundant and there was a wide variety for every palate. You can get a cocktail to sip on throughout the tour as well as some popcorn to munch on. Kate was SUPERB at explaining the history of Mayberry Spirits as well as the distilling process at their facility. She also does the ghost tours in Mt Airy and we can't wait to go back and have her show us around downtown! The actual tasting after the tour was the most bang for your buck. We got to taste all all of their whiskeys that they make in house and then we got to play around and mix them with an assortment of bitters and juices. We got to taste an assortment of six for only $12! Lastly their gift shop is the cutest if you need a birthday/Christmas gift. We want to visit again just to bring home one of their cocktail kits. We had the BEST time at Mayberry Spirits. This is probably the best distillery tour I've ever done. Our tour guide, Kate, was everything you'd want in a guide! She was extremely knowledgeable, personable, tons of personality and completely informative. I loved how they have a board showing the boiling points of the components in their spirits and they had tons of visuals (the sorghum they use in their whisky, two jars of different proof whisky that demonstrated the difference in appearance when shaken, pieces of the barrel components) it was very interactive, informative and fun! We were there a little early, so we got cocktails (which come with popcorn!) I love that they do have the cocktail option, because many distilleries offer only the spirits stand-alone (I can't hang) and I enjoyed the Dutch Apple Pie I ordered. I appreciated they even went a step further with super nice presentation of the drinks! You can take your cocktails into the distillery room and sip while you enjoy the tour. After the tour, we went back to the main area for a tasting! This was a treat. They have ample areas for the 4 groups doing the tour to taste. Our group of 5 gathered round the barrel to embark on the tasting. It has cute little Mayberry Spirits shot glasses already placed for us, along with a dump bucket & water. First, we tasted the 3 spirits stand-alone. I don't really like straight alcohol, but I enjoyed the vanilla whisky. After those, it's not over! We got to try several cocktail shooters. Some with Cheerwine, some with bitters (they had tons of flavors, everyone got to pick their flavor and add their own!) I really enjoyed the concoctions they presented! They had so many great gifts for purchase as well! They offer cocktail kits that include their spirits and all the necessary mixers! We all agreed we want to come back to get Christmas gifts! I was completely shocked at the value of what we got at Mayberry Spirits! The cocktails were $10 across the board - super reasonable, especially considering the quality/presentation. The tour and tasting was $12 total! I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was $20 considering the great 20-30 minute tour we got and the generous tasting, PLUS the souvenir shot glass! This is a must stop if you are visiting the area. We were lucky enough to have Terri as our guide. What a wonderful person. The education she shared on their approach could only be topped with personal stories about the owner, the area, and their day to day functioning. We were able to order a few cocktails for our tour. Very cool set up where all the work is actually done. Our tasting was a much better experience than we anticipated. We were given samples for various whiskeys, some cocktails, and bitters....all while enjoying wonderful stories and whiskey lessons by Terri. The popcorn and bar set up is such a great touch. Store area has cigars, coffees, and yes, you purchase a bottle of your favorite when you leave. Highly recommend you pay them a visit, you will leave happy you did. We arrived just after a tour started and rushed over to join them before we had a chance to look around. The tour itself was pleasant and educational. Learned they don't use corn but sorghum to use in mash( rare these days) The tasting consisted of their 3 blends of shine and a couple specialty drinks made from other items they make using the "throw off" moonshine. After the tasting and in the gift shop, we notice the sign saying taste and tour$12 a person. A bit over priced compared to most places I've been( a lot are free and in Gatlinburg it's $5 for like 13 different tastes. ) Their whiskies are very good, smooth and are at 100 proof. I visited while I was in the area visiting Pilot Mt. Their tour and tasting is inexpensive at $10 but they do have a groupon available for even lower price! We got there a bit earlier than our tour time so we got to look around the shop. I really liked the rusty decor, which I found out that a lot of their decor were recycled door and windows from abandoned barns. They have varieties of products including soaps, cigars, gourmet extracts, and coffee. As far as the tasting goes, I really enjoyed their Crystal Moon and Toasted Vanilla! Toasted Oak was a bit too strong for me but still good. We got to try Dutch Apple Pie, Mayberry Spirits Signature Cocktail, and it was as good as it sounds! Our guide, Terri, was absolutely amazing! We've been on a number of winery and distillery tours, so we thought we knew exactly what we were going to get when we booked this tour. Man, were we in for a surprise! I thoroughly enjoyed that the tour was not just a "here's our still" and a description of the process. Instead, we learned about some of the history of whiskey production, sampled the sorghum molasses/syrup to see how the input product is different between this distillery and others, and saw the production version as well as an "old time" version of a still. While in the still area, we could see, smell, and understand how differences in the process give different results...all before going back to the tasting area and tasting the same differences. It's clear that this business is a passion for the folks who work there and something they truly enjoy; not just another "let me give my speech and do my job" kind of tour. On this and other tours I've been on, I've been told about all the things you can do with their product, like mix it with mixers, dissolve candies, etc.; but it was nice to actually taste examples BEFORE you buy the product and ruin what you purchased. We usually do tastings, but rarely make a purchase; not here. We were anxious to make our purchase and get it home so we could have some more! Definitely worth the stop! And be careful that you don't miss it. It shares a building with a thrift shop and the parking area is very small. read more

Bought a groupon for a tour of this establishment and was not disappointed! It's a small distillery but their whiskey still packs a punch. If you're taking the tour prepare to learn a lot unless you already are a whiskey fanatic. The lady at the counter was very nice upon entering and the guy who led us in the tour was very knowledgeable. It's not a great big area so you go to the back room and see it all at once. Makes it easier not having to walk around! On a side note the tour would be super accessible for anyone in a wheelchair or someone that has mobility issues. The showroom/shop has tons of locally made items including their whiskey. Take time and look at everything. Plenty of items for yourself and lots to give as gifts! You can only buy one bottle due to Nc restriction laws but the ABC store is right down the road and is fully stocked with your favorite bottle from the tour! read more

We visited Mayberry Spirits today and took a tour. Our guide, Van, was phenomenal! We learned so much about the distillation process and sustainability of the operation during our tour. Afterwards, we were able to taste five varieties and a "mixed drink" sample using one of their whiskies. At $10 this experience was a bargain, and we got to bring our shot glasses home. I always take out of town guest to Mount Airy and Mayberry Spirits is a must go place! Every time I stop there are now offerings. Some from Mayberry Spirits and others from local artists selling their wares. I am hooked on the Vanilla Whiskey infused Honduran whole bean coffee! You can get whiskey infused coffee, cigars, their own house made extracts, infused sea salts and sugars. I have attended several of the daily tours with out of town friends and family but last night 16 members from my gym attended a 2 hours Mixology Tour that we planned in advance. Vann McCoy makes you feel right at home with his informative, educational and entertaining immersion into the world of craft distilling. We drove 2 hours to visit here, and we were not disappointed. We very much enjoyed the tour, and the tasting. The retail room is very cute, with a good amount of product, but not overwhelming. Our tour guide, Melissa, was very knowledgeable, very nice, and patient. Upon leaving, we were given great advice to go check out the downtown atmosphere. When we first pulled up, I was concerned that I had over hyped myself for an afternoon date. The atmosphere and personalities make this such a wonderful, welcoming place to visit. Our tour was informative and highly entertaining. We tasted several spirits options and enjoyed them.
