1/6/19 Wow,…read moreIt's amazing the flavor you can get out of a thimble full of spirit, or two ( i didn't want to risk accidentally going over the extra 5 mile speed limit, wizzing down 221 toward 17, on my way to Black Mountain N. C and being stopped by the local law enforcement... Gabriel the totally chill and most friendly mixologist gave that excellent suggestion for my next stop. This small distillery puts some big flavors in their moonshine; elderberry, vanilla plum, sweet mountain, lemon ginseng (my favorite I bought two bottles). The last time I drank corn whiskey both the white and yellow I used some of it to clean some of my paint brushes since I was blinded by the light, the white lightning that is). This much more flavorful potion leaves you with a fond memory not a jagged nightmare. On the way out of Floyd it it is was easy to miss the steep hill that you travel up to get to this hidden gem, look sharp, its real close to the town border. After your visit, hop back in the car and drive about 1000 feet down Route 221 and stop at the Willdwood General Store, and if your lucky enough to be passing through on a Sunday (another story) your in for a real treat.

Their waffle fries were crispy and sprinkled with cajun spice. Not spicy or greasy. The regular burgers are good but don't top the bison burger. Great service and efficient even while being short-staffed. The wait staff very courteous and happy. Good tunes playing. Bathrooms very clean. The distillery was easy to find - outside of town, very close to the airport. Plenty of parking, and very attractive grounds. Inside, thrilled to find a huge selection of merchandise, friendly staff, and a tasting bar. Tasting portion (which does have a fee) is a very generous pour, so feel free to split between two people. You can always order a cocktail or pour of what you like. I learned about the label protocol and mash bills, and left with a few bottles, stickers, cards, maple syrup and manhattan cocktail concentrate. Oh, and huge smile on my face.

Whiskey!! Wonderful find in Halifax County!! Beautiful…read morecountryside and bursting with charm. The owner was supreme and while we were choosing what to purchase, she offered us samples. From blackberry, to peach, to honey.... they are all crafted magnificently. For our visit, we settled on whiskey + coffee. I love how she asked what level of sweetness we preferred and then brought out our favorite creamer to add in the coffee. The coffee + cream + whipped topping was perfect to sit outside on a Fall evening and sip. After packaging our to go bottles, we asked a few more questions to the distiller himself and he shared that they make about 2 batches a month,sometimes 3. Even though it wasn't a tour, his sharing helped us understand the process and how lucky we were to find this gem. Even if you don't drink whiskey, go and enjoy the scenery. Order some snacks and play a few board games. Excellent for date night, Friday cheers or just because.

She took us to five fantastic and picturesque wineries that we absolutely loved. I have to say that Afton Mountain Winery was my favorite. Her 20 years of local knowledge was evident and the gourmet lunch she provided was definitely a WOW. You can't go wrong here folks. Enjoy.
