    What I bought.

Located on the Hudson river with exceptional views of the Manhattan skyline, Hoboken is rich in Brownstone apartments, taverns, bistros and late 19th century architecture. It is also the birthplace of Frank Sinatra. Did you know they even named a road after him called Frank Sinatra Drive? On the weekends the city is overloaded with young adults seeking what young adults seek. I come to Hoboken for pastries, notably from The Old German Bakery. On this visit, I was visiting an friend and his wife who live in one of the Brownstones. The Old German Bakery is not a large store but it is fully stocked in the morning. I came on this pilgrimage for blueberry cheese strudel, German sweet cheese w/ strawberry sauce strudel,, apple strudel and an almond croissant. Each cost me $5.50. What we do for love! The stores have no artificial flavors, coloring or preservatives. The products sold follow original recipes produced by Haytad Urachyan, who was born in Cologne Germany.

These have imported cheese from Europe, but the paper stuck to the Raspberry & Cheese pastry

Dang. I wanted to like these so much, but at $5.50 per pastry, I just couldn't justify buying these again. I got sold on the cheese that he imports from Europe, so I got the two special pastries with that cheese. But the texture of the cheese is like mushy/crumbly with a taste almost like mozzarella and Swiss but blander? The raspberry one got the parchment paper stuck on it so I had to peel that off before eating it. It took like 5 minutes to peel off that paper with my nails. Pretty sure I still ate some paper. There's also nowhere to sit since he sells this stuff outside the door. There were no signs showing what each pastry or bread is, and no price. He explains what everything is though when it's your turn to order. But I won't be coming back. :(

We love Old German Bakery! The owner and his family are delightful and offer such delicious breads and pastries. There's so many savory and sweet, but not overly sweet options. Love to stop by and grab some of my favorites especially on the weekend. His small cart in front of the store is so similar style to shops in Cologne, Germany where they are from. I'm all about supporting local businesses and these guys have my heart

The food was really good and priced well. The shop guy was so nice I really enjoyed his service. The local of the place was very cute as well. The pastries are a bit sweet but nothing too crazy!

Mmmmm. Almond croissant = amazing. Strawberry cheese danish = spectacular. Friendly owner from Cologne, Germany chatting with us about her hometown = priceless.

Oh my. This has got to be one of the best, if not thee best apple turnovers I've had to date. We'd passed the bright colored cart outside the shop on our way to have lunch. There was a line, so I was curious. Made a mental note to take took a closer look on the way back. The interior of the store is closed off to customers, but there are some cakes in the store window. The cute cart is full of chocolate croissants, berry and cheese danishes, and these amazing apple turnovers. They were so perfect looking that I had to buy one. I'm usually disappointed in turnovers, because they're too doughy or soggy, and the fruit doesn't have much flavor. Nor does the gelatin that is used as filler. I told myself I'd only have a quarter of it and save the rest for later. I took one bite while walking to find a coffee shop, and it was clear this flaky piece of heaven on earth wouldn't last long. Whatever fat & flour they use to make these crispy, light layers of dough isn't your typical American recipe. It's just sweet enough without being over bearing, and the apple chunks are plump and fruity. I don't know why the interior is closed, but I would spend mini morning indulging if you could sit and have pastries and coffee inside. I highly recommend this bakery, and will most definitely get a chocolate croissant on the next visit.

I come here every chance I can when I am in hoboken. You can get cake slices and pastries without pre ordered though you have to pre order full cakes and of course by closing time most slices are sold out. I had the 4 layer chocolate cake and it was amazing. So light and not too sweet. Very delicate but hit the spot

My boyfriend and I got: Almond Croissant ($4.25) Savory leek pastry ($4.25) Cherry Crispy Chocolate ($6.90) Everything was "eh" :( Not entirely sure what the hype is here, but I have been told by my boyfriend that my pastry expectations are very high so maybe that's it? Very cute storefront though:)

stopped by here spontaneously on a Saturday afternoon as I've seen the cart that is the front area of their store, many times! I never had a chance to stop by, but there was no line so decided to see what they had. both staff I talked to were super friendly and patient in explaining german desserts, the light and not sugar-heavy flavors that their desserts have, which was just what we were looking for!! the coffee cake, chocolate mousse, and the pineapple papaya one I believe?? (something like that) were super delicious and just as described. they are on the pricier side at about $6 a piece and we ordered about 5 slices of their cakes, but they were super tasty so I'm excited to come back here to come and support a local bakery :)

This is by far the only place my mom approves for Black Forest Cake. They are pricey, but worth it for special occasions. The cake is so moist and flavorful! I like how the whole cake comes cut already due to the cake losing its shape if I cut it at home. (The owner suggests this to be cut by him)

What a delightful bakery! Loved their latte, almond croissant and pastries. Talk to the owner before you choose the pastries. He is very knowledgeable and will tell you all the ingredients and also tells you the ones he doesn't fancy and why. The place gets really packed in weekends. The almond croissant I had was so succulent and yum.

This was a place that we walked past about 875,000 times. And said "we should check it out…read moresometime." Sometime became today! And boy, were we in for a pleasant surprise, as we truly enjoyed ourselves. No one does beer hall like a German place. This is just facts. We had the Berliner Weisse, which comes in a .5L or 1L boot (does German beer count if it's not in a boot?). This was a delicious raspberry syrupy undertone wheat beer, and definitely a must have for next time. Though there were like a dozen other beers I need to have. They also have a pretty extensive wine selection, if that's your thing. We were there for a brunch. When we arrived, before 1pm, it wasn't busy at all. By the time we left, it was pretty full. The bar had seats though. Anyhoo, I tried their "energizer" which were eggs any style (poached for me), creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. Never had a breakfast like this one! It was almost like a deconstructed eggs Florentine. YUM. My husband had the Heidelberger which was a German style hamburger with frizzled onions and mashed potatoes. He let me try some, it was pretty fantastic so I may need to try it sometime myself. Also do not miss their ginormous Bavarian pretzel. It was quite possibly the best I've had (and I've had many!). The service was outstanding, and the vibe was ... I dunno a step above what you saw in Fast Times where they go to the German restaurant. My only regret is that I didn't get the apfelstrudel. Next time! Washrooms are single occupancy.

After visiting the German Consulate General, we were looking to celebrate new dual citizenship with authentic German cuisine. We came for midday lunch but ordered off the full menu rather than the lunch/brunch menu. My wife ordered the duck, I ordered the wienerschnitzel. The duck made my wife throw up two hours after ingesting it. My (albeit) medium-well schnitzel ordered came extra well-done, crispy both on the inside and out. The restaurant was dark and freezing. Workmen were bringing in wood materials from the back and the door was left open for the duration of the meal to accommodate the establishment and its workmen over the dining comfort of its patrons. We asked about the unendurable arctic environment and the genial young man seating us, serving us and also tripling as barman, returned to say there was nothing he could do. Well, there is something we will do. Never ever come back.

Came for a birthday party (that was moved from a park last minute because of the rain). We were in the front room and had 3 large party platters of food. The food was tasty overall - there were 2 platters with fried chicken, jalapeño poppers, huge pretzels, fries, mozzarella sticks, celery, and a lot of sauces. There was also a platter with a bbq theme with smaller pretzels, pulled pork, sausage, kraut, cabbage, german potato salad, smoked wings/chicken, ribs, another type of meat, fries, and sauces/cheese dip. A member of the staff said the front room wasn't child friendly and a couple had to sit in the big noisy room in the back with their kid while the majority of the party was up front. Not really sure why it mattered because both rooms have bars serving alcohol, and later on more and more kids were staying up front and no one told them to move. The same staff member went around taking used plates, cups and attempted to remove the food platters when they were still actively being picked over (a pet peeve of mine). He did try to accommodate us in the back by offering a long table (but it wasn't enough for the whole group) so it became the kids table. The bartender was attentive and I did not have to wait to long to be served. They have a large jug of water so you can serve yourself and the bartender can focus on everything else. I had a couple of gin and tonics that were under $9 each. They let the party bring in and serve a homemade cake.
