Went to old Chicago Monday may 10 2021 . My wife and I walked in and the girl behind the hostess station was separating receipts and counting cash. She said just a moment. No problem we said. She then made stress noises and said it would be a little bit yet y to o be seated. She left went to a screen across the room and placed a n order it appeared. The place was a third occupancy filled. We finally were seated and she left to take care of a table. The place had 3 tables of old women playing cards with water as far as I could tell. ( non paying from the looks of it ) when she managed to get our drink order we asked if we could order food right away as well. She said um and paused. We said is it going to take a long time for food? She said I don't know. We said a guess . 30 minutes maybe she seemed stressed. Place was under staffed and not trained properly for basic restaurant operations. Poor girl had magnets in her ears for earrings on top of everything else. We ended up telling her we were going to go rather than order. The stress and her energy made us not want to even bother. The past times we have been here the food was quite good. After not being able to get into several other busy establishments in Dubuque on a Saturday at lunch with our group of five, we saw the empty lot at Old Chicago and went there. That should have been our first warning sign. The place was dead and we were seated immediately. The waitress got our drinks and then warned us that she was the only one working today, since two others called in sick. We were sympathetic and expected a bit slower service. About an hour after she took our order, she returned to tell us that she forgot to put it in to the kitchen. She re-took our order and promised that it would be "rushed" and prepared next in the kitchen. We then saw four different orders go out to the bar area before our food finally arrived 45-minutes after the re-order. The manager apologized and knocked $30 off of our bill. Unfortunately, the other reviews on here show that this is a trend at Old Chicago in Dubuque. We won't be back. It is really too bad. This place doesn't deserve a star. Our waitress was fine, but the pizza was awful. We ordered a double deccaroni, it took forever to come out. When is finally did, the cheese wasn't even melted. Met some friends here on the 3rd when our original choice was closed for the holiday. There was a decent crowd and a lot of people eating pizza, so usually a good sign that the food is good. Yeah, not so much. We waited about 15 minutes at the bar for a table for 6. The waiter (male) was nice, took our drink order and appetizer order and food order quickly. Then he told us that he was transferring our table to another server because he was "going somewhere". The other server brought our apps to the table, took orders to refresh drinks and disappeared. We never saw her again until it was time for the check. One of the apps (pretzel bites) was burnt and we would have complained, if she had come back to check on us, but she didn't. The original waiter brought our food out like 15 minutes later and we mentioned to him that we never got our drink refills and he told us they had been sitting up at the bar for 10 minutes, so he went and got them (melted ice and all). Then we asked for water refills because our glasses were empty .. but no one ever got around to doing that. Two of our party ordered pizza and they said it was good, but the rest of us were not impressed by the entrees. I can't even say they were just ok...because they weren't even that good. She brought out a barely warm pizza for us to eat while we waited for the correct one. The new one wasn't baked all the way, crust was ok but the cheese was still in strands and the vegetables were not cooked at all. I ordered a burger and my fiancée ordered boneless wings and a side salad. Our food took a long time. My burger clearly sat under a warming light for a long period of time because the cheese was dry and the burger was over done. There was no seasoning on the burger and the fries were just ok. They tasted old. My fiancés Cesar salad was wilted and had no dressing. The text alert waiting system is sort of cool but other than that we were not impressed. I'm sure they will do fine without my review, though, given that they are attached to a busy hotel and can be predators of the people staying at said hotel. I am saying this even after I worked at Old Chicago at another location. It took 2.5 hours (I know, right!) to get my pizza. The server admitted he was new. He was able to take our drink orders. There was a more knowledgeable server who was helping him who seemed oblivious to the fact that it took the new server 45 minutes (!) to even take our food order. They then brought out the wrong size pizza and the wrong pizza type to my husband so they had to re-cook the pizza we ordered. The pizza they re-cooked had raw dough and wasn't cooked completely. They also forgot the peppers we ordered for said pizza. My son said the pasta he had sucked. I know the rest of our 15 person party were also disappointed to the point that we had a pizza party the next night in the hotel and the pizza was from another chain... read more

We were there on a very busy Saturday night...and brought 38 people. Called earlier and they said that we wouldn't be able to sit together and it would be a long wait. Decided to try anyway. Although the main man that looked like the host seemed to be discouraging me with a long time frame, we said we would wait and be willing to split up in groups. They started seating us within about 20-30 minutes, and had all 38 of us seated within 35-40 minutes...and we were all on connecting tables or very near each other. I thought the service was very good. Our food came within a very timely fashion, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The young man who was helping to get us seated was very sweet and helpful, and another young man that actually was seating us was also very nice and helpful. We ordered three types of pizza for lunch at the organization I work. The pizza was excellent and the staff was very happy. I use to manage a restaurant here in Dubuque for many years and I know how difficult wait times for food can be, however, Old Chicago is new to Dubuque and I think that people need to give them a break!! I have read some reviews that have not been very generous and I think that those folks who submitted the reviews need to think back when they were new at something (i.e. a job) and remember how difficult it was for them to become efficient. I am not trying to make excuses, however, there is always a learning curve with anything new and I believe Old Chicago will surpass this issue as well and become a favorite of the folks in Dubuque and the surrounding cities. I was a Champs regular and loved the staff...so please take the time to think how difficult and frustrating it is for them because I know they want to please their guests. I know there are a lot of new staff as well who are eager to please, so again, have some patience with Old Chicago! Thank you!! read more

Waiter discussed happy hour prices on Saturday. Not being familiar with the drink menu ourselves we listened to the waiter, out of a group of eight guests, four adults got "drink specials." Waiter did not ID nor did he mind personal space. Every guests ordered pizza and appetizers, which we waited over an hour to receive appetizers. Half of the appetizers came out cold. Silverware was filthy. Staff let dirty dishes sit almost the entire meal time st the table. Waited another twenty minutes for food. Had the worst experience on Saturday, February 1. We ordered our food and it took an hour to get our appetizer. Which was to be loaded nachos. The cheese wasnt melted, no beans, no toppings as listed! Was terrible. Then it took another 45 minutes to get our food. Was 1 hr 45 min. Our food was terrible!!!!! My chicken tasted like it was put in microwave and rubbery, couldn't chew or eat it. The veggies were cold under it and like about 1/4 cup. Was terrible!!! The calzone had no stuffings hardly. Ordered a beer and got only little over 1/2 glass cause so much foam and flat.Took it up to bar to tell bartender, cause we never seen our waiter only 4 times total in 2.25 hrs. The bar tender walked away from me after I told him something wrong with the beer n i got little over half glass, he had a beard and was so stressed out. He left from behind the bar, there was no one behind the bar. They couldn't even walk behind the bar it was so wet and sloppy. Was a sloppy mess top and bottom. There was no garnish given with bloody mary as ordered, said somethingto waiter when we finally got our drinks and he was like have none . Waiter said there was none cut up. No lemons, limes, nothing for drinks. After the bearded guy left so do other bartender and then there was actually no one behind the bar then. Finally I some one came in bar area and I got a different beer. Was a sloppy mess! The food was horrible, didnt eat it! The waiter said he was sorry cause was a bad system. The oven can only hold two pizzas at a time. Asked for avocado, got none cause waiter said out, but got charged for it! Ordered a mojito and it was all sweet sour mix and couldn't drink it! I never had such a bad experience at an Old Chicago! Plus the place was a pig pen! Bathrooms, bar area, dining area! And it was not that busy, and now I know why! Worse ever!!!! We called ahead to see about a reservation for a birthday dinner and was told they do not take reservations. Thought it shouldn't be too bad with 3 adults and 2 kids but we got there a bit earlier than when we were hoping to eat just in case. 5:40 we were told 20 minutes for a table. The restaurant was about 1/2-2/3 full so lots of open seats. After 45 minutes of waiting, lots of open tables, and 7 employees standing around I went to the counter. The man completely ignored me for a few minutes and just kept looking past me, I was finally able to ask how much longer and asked about a table that was open the whole time we were there and they said that was for a reservation (but they dont take reservations?) FINALLY got a table. Ordered an appetizer right away since everyone was hungry. They brought the appetizer and a little tray with a pile of forks and knifes that were still wet on some napkins. I also work in a restaurant and understand that sometimes when its busy its hard to keep up that kind of thing but it was not busy and there was 5 or 6 people always standing around up front. We ordered our food and it took about 45-50 minutes to arrive. 2 kids meals were fine, I ordered a chicken sandwich with fries - chicken was dry and fries were cold, my moms food was dry and not good, and some one else ordered a pizza. The pizza was good. Would normally have ordered a birthday dessert but it was already 8pm. The whole time the person who looked like manager was just walking around blankly, never checked in with any tables around us or anything. None of the staff had any hustle or looked like they even cared that people were waiting for so long for tables, they all just stood around up front the whole time. Server kept putting her hand on my back while talking to us, shouldn't have to move away from the server to give her the hint that customers have personal space. Very poor experience - 2 hours and 20 minutes there and didn't even eat most my food. We went to have a nice birthday celebration dinner and left disappointed. read more

I have been coming in for the last couple of weeks to watch Monday night football. The last few weeks the business has gotten less and less busy, and I really understand why after my visit tonight. I first called and spoke with a male host who verified that you were open until 11 PM, and the kitchen served food until about 10:30, and decided to come in. After arriving we sat at the bar and tried to order a beer, of which there were about a dozen that you were out of. Then myself, my friends, and another couple across the bar tried to order food at about 10:15, after reasking a server what time the kitchen closed and was told 10:30. About 10 minutes later, the bartender came out and told us the kitchen had closed and the staff had already gone home for the night. When I asked to talk with the manager, it was obvious that she was just as in shock and confused as we were as to why the staff decided to close and leave without speaking to her. No wonder this place continues to get negative reviews while business gets less and less frequent. Out of food, out of beer, and out of patience with how poorly this place has continued to operate. The server, bartender, and manager were all obviously confused and taken aback so I am not sure as to why or how this happened but it seems like there is always something wrong that shouldn't be happening in a well run establishment. read more

With a name containing "Chicago", I'd expect the deep dish pizza to be good....unfortunately, it was the exact opposite of good. Our deep dish cheese pizza was lukewarm at best and cold in spots, the cheese was nonexistent in any form that resembled typical pizza cheese, and the sauce seemed to be a can of crushed tomatoes just thrown on. The cheese (or lack there of) was most disappointing as it was sparse and consisted of "flakes". In all fairness, the crust was excellent. I don't plan on going back until I hear either new management or friends reporting improvement. This is the type of restaurant situation that Dubuquers will not tolerate as there are far too many better options. Hope to someday sample real deep dish pizza at Old Chicago....maybe in Dubuque? Had a horrible experience on opening weekend. Ordered a "Chicago 7" for takeout. It was so undercooked the cheese was barely melted. I'm from Chicago, I know what a good pizza is. This was not a good pizza. We took it home and cooked it in the oven to the proper place. It was delicious. All that being said, it was opening weekend and I can understand undercooking pizzas in order to deal with the demand. But then tonight happened. I ordered for takeout and asked SPECIFICALLY that the pizza was to be "WELL DONE". The order taker confirmed. I also ordered a pasta and salad. When I retrieved the order I couldn't easily review the pizza because the salad and pasta were stacked on top. I drove home. I opened the pizza. It was f***ing undercooked. Nowhere near "well done". The crust was doughy, the cheese was not even golden brown, and the toppings tasted raw. I fired up the oven (on an 82 degree day, the last thing I wanted) and cooked the pizza at 425 for an additional 12 mins. It turned out perfect. What a joke. I can make a better pizza in my oven with Digiorno. If they would've cooked the pizza to the proper level it would be pretty decent. This place has a lot of work to do. read more

Even though 5 people stood around at the hostess station including large sweaty manager. They even told many other guests (at least a dozen) that it would be an hour wait who decided to just leave. We should have left at that point. We finally had to ask about being seated and they acted like they didn't know that we were there even though we had put in our name and stood right next to the hostess stand. When we were finally seated our party received different menus that had different items. When we asked the waitress, she just tried to lie and say they had the same items. Then when we pointed out that they didn't, she said "well..um...I don't know." Then she came back and said some were old and they were "trying" to romove them. What does "trying" mean? Either you do or don't. We were very frustrated and and annoyed so our dining experience was just ruined and decided to leave without ordering and went somewhere else. Save yourself the trouble of going to this terrible service restaurant when there are much better options in Dubuque. read more

I have been to Old Chicago 6 times know, and 4 of the 6 were really good. That being said, as time goes on and a restaurant becomes established and the staff becomes seasoned, it should get better. Not the case at Old Chicago. The last two times progressively got worse. And if my first experience would have been anything like last nights experience, I most likely would not have come back. 10 minutes before our server showed up at the table, missing components of the ordered meals, meals brought out at different times, empty condiment bottles and super skimpy portions($2.00 serving of coleslaw barely covered the bottom of the dipping sauce size bowl they use) and the fries were sparingly and haphazardly tossed on the plate next to my Big Hot Mess of a Burger. Our server asked us how our food was and if we needed anything while delivering the bill, not before. Refills were never offered. So, for a small order of wings, a personal size pizza and two burgers for almost $60, I guess I expect more. Its not as if they don't have plenty of competition in the area. Seems as though they have mistaken riding the wave of being a Newbie Restaurant in Dubuque Iowa, with having it all together. Hate to break it to the management, but this town does this with every new restaurant. Its nothing new. And when the same old newbie mistakes continue to be made, they will tire and move on to the next new shiny object that holds a moment in time for the Diners of Dubuque.
