We went here on 4th of July weekend after the kids baseball tournament (we are from out of state). Inside is a good size, sports bar-ish vibes. Public parking is close by. It's probably a 15 minute walk from Grand Harbor hotel. We came for the burger variety and milk shakes. Unfortunately they were out of ice cream so not everyone in the party got to enjoy shakes which was disappointing considering that was one of the selling points. Server was very polite as we know it wasn't his fault. Burgers were fantastic. Breaded Fries had great potential but a bit greasy for me. My son ordered a plain burger but was served a fully loaded. When the kitchen server came out and asked whose burger it was, we said it wasn't ours because he ordered a plain burger. She stated that it must be this one and handed to him. No harm done as he's not allergic to lettuce, tomato or pickles (kind of...he's a kid!) but just a miss there considering it wasn't the least bit busy. While I appreciate the casual atmosphere and table graffiti, they were rather sticky. There was a film on them so thick you could scratch with your nail. When your arms stick to the table it's a little annoying but it was upper 80's and humid. If I was local I'd give it another go. If you're visiting and love burgers, try it out as maybe we just had bad luck on a holiday weekend. Where do I start. First ordering was quite challenged by the fact that they were out of chicken wings, avocados and ice cream. This is what we know. The food took a long time to make. The order was wrong. The chips in the chips and queso were stale. The chicken and avocado sandwich without the avocado (since they were out) was grilled so that some pieces were too hard to eat. The southwest salad had lettuce stumps. They did have good TVs so I give them points for that. read more

My friend and I came here for dinner while in Dubuque and it was so good! A casual spot but we each got the strawberry pecan salad, which were so huge that we could have split one! It was delicious, loaded with strawberries, blue cheese, chicken, candied pecans and a pomegranate vinaigrette. Honestly one of the best salads of this type I have had. Barrel House appears to be an east Iowa chain that is a full service casual pub serving a wide variety of craft beers on tap and elevated bar food. After a huge BBQ lunch earlier in the day while traveling we needed a place near the hotel for a beer and a light meal. BH fit the criteria and we didn't have to stay and deal with the hotel restaurant. I ordered a Melon Mojito Cider from the Tap menu that paired well with the Firecracker Shrimp Salad. A dozen spicy shrimps with a bed of greens and veggies topped with a mound of fried onion straws and a spicy ranch dressing - a perfect salad. My wife had a Citrus Surfer wheat beer and an order of truffle fries. No issues on food and our waiter was covering a lot of area and doing a great job. read more

We have been here a half dozen times over the last couple of years. The draft beer selection was ok, but needs more IPA's during the summer. The floor needed a thorough cleaning, not just at our table, but at others. The spicy cheese curds were the star of the day. Great seasoning, not too much spice and to me is a must order. They have shakes in regular and boozy. A little on the higher end for cost than I have paid at other establishments but good. The server kept forgetting or they had forgotten to make the shake as it came out with the food and it had been ordered long before that. If the floor had not been in the state it was in this review would be higher. read more

This place use to be one of our favorite stops in Dubuque. Food was excellent and service was decent. We recently had an experience in which they were out of everything we wanted to order (practically all appetizers, including certain beverages) and the service was awful (took over an hour for the food to arrive). The server couldn't spell the names of basic dishes to find them on his device. The food was only so-so, plus left my spouse and I feeling not so good later. We will not be returning. read more

We stopped in for lunch and it took a bit to be greeted at the front but when we did the waiter was very friendly and found a table for 5 quickly. They have a great selection of beers on tap as well as plenty of TVs to watch. Our food came out fast and hot. My son's pizza was great but could have been cooked a bit longer as the dough was a bit raw in the center still. I love the extra touches with the branding on their buns and they used fresh avocado on the wrap which was great. We will return. read more

Service was slow, water was nasty. Shrimp tacos were swimming in sauce, but in a bad. Miami was pretty good though.

We had a group of 20 that came in an hour before they closed. They gave us a section by ourselves (much appreciated with 10 kids). It did take a while to get the waitress but she was training another. They were both very nice and helpful. We put the kids orders in first with our drink order and then when the drinks came put in the adult order. The kids chicken tenders were huge. Not average tenders, they were awesome. My three kids split two orders and could of split one. I had the firecracker shrimp wrap and it was really good! I'd come back. read more

Ate a late dinner with my dad on a Saturday evening around 7pm. We had an awesome server, I think he said his name was Alex. He was very informative and gave us a lot of recommendations. I ordered the Easy Eddy IPA and my dad ordered a wheat beer recommended by the server. We enjoyed both of them But preferred the Easy Eddy. For food I ordered the Buffalo chicken wrap and my dad ordered mushroom and Swiss burger. Our server recommended several dipping sauces, our favorite was the Fire Cracker Ranch! My wrap was awesome, on the spicier side which I don't mind. We loved the fries too, perfectly battered with a little crunch. I'd definitely come back! read more

AFter a morning shopping for furniture, my husband and I stopped into Barrel House for a bite of lunch. Their lunch specials were very good with beverage, starter and entree included for one price. But the real highlight was Sarah our server. She gave us great service, was funny and didn't miss a thing from explaining the menu to getting us to-go cups for our beverages (ice tea and Diet Pepsi). I was visiting Dubuque on St. Patrick's day and I was on the search for green beer. I thought this would be an easy task, but let me tell you... It was not! I walked around downtown and called around 5-6 bars with no luck. The bars either did not have green beer or they had run out the day before... On St. Patrick's day?! My brain could not comprehend. I was about to give up but then I saw Barrel House. I gave them a call, and the friendly voice and the other line said the words I've been wanting to hear all night... "Yes, we have green beer". I told her I would be there in two seconds. Honestly, the beer is not that great, but it was green. It is a berry beer that's naturally green and not dyed, so it is very sweet. We also ordered the strawberry and cream fried pies that's very good. Sweet, creamy and crunchy all in one bite! I will definitely be back if I visit again to eat a proper meal! What a cool place to stop! Huge bar and restaurant! Lots of craft beers and handcrafted food to choose from. Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich the best thing I ate while visiting in the entire city! The crab ragoon dip they raved about was just ok in my opinion and we love crab ragoon. Wish we could have tried more food choices. Hostess with the least. On vacation with the family, party of 5. Menu looked good and it was a close walk from our hotel. It was a Sunday night, not everyone is staffed for a busy night, I get that. Walked in the host did not greet us and stood facing away. A server walked by she asked her a question and she proceeded to tell us there were 50 people in front of us. Not waiting, seated, they were ordering. There were about 20 empty tables. She continually told us and the following 2 groups that entered that it would be 20-30 minutes bc there 50 people ahead. She did not offer to seat, a menu to preview just walked to the bar to get herself a drink. I understand only having a few servers but two groups dining also left while we waited. Happy to wait our turn for food but she had to consult waitresses who were busy and did not bother to great customers. Proceeded to find another restaurant as did everyone else that walked in. Downtown Dubuque is really coming on, a wonderful collection of restaurants and shops in a safe, walking environment. On my most recent trip to The Field of Dreams Movie Site, I thoroughly enjoyed a dinner at Barrel House, from start to finish a really good overall experience. Warmly greeted upon entering the restaurant, a business associate and I chose to sit in the dining area instead of their spacious bar region. Appreciated the courteous and quick service throughout our visit by our server. She recommended the spinach and artichoke dip, and she nailed it. Delicious, good-sized portion, tasty! I opted for a chicken Caesar salad, and it was a big portion that was very good, hit the spot. Fresh and well-prepared, they didn't skimp on the chicken either. We topped off a working dinner with sensational turtle cheesecake, which was delicious. Good atmosphere, plenty of space, enjoyed the giant screen televisions showing live baseball games. Lots of public parking directly across the street, metered parking until 5PM. They're right in the heart of downtown Dubuque, directly across the street from the Travel Dubuque headquarters, and in the first mile of Iowa after crossing the Mississippi. I'll be spending quite a bit of time in this region, and there's no doubt I'll return to Barrel House again. read more
