Food was mediocre for breakfast and the blood mary was pretty bland. Service was not super friendly and seemed annoyed to have to be working. No chaser offered for the bloody mary and the sausage was way too greasy to eat. The hash browns were also only crispy on the edge and clearly weren't moved on the flat top because it was a giant mound of potatoes that were all cooked differently. I'm a big fan of getting into local neighborhoods to try new restaurants so when I saw that this place has breakfast I stopped by to check it out. The place is a small neighborhood bar and restaurant with locals who all know each other and did the look at the outsider who walked in for breakfast. The breakfast menu is small but it is a bar so I ordered the West Dubuque breakfast which is hash browns, two eggs, toast and choice of meat. The lady asked me if I wanted cheese or onions in my hash browns so I say yes with onions and sunny side up eggs, sausage patties and white toast. I ordered a Bloody Mary with my breakfast which was kind of pathetic and basic with no celery salt I noticed. When my plate hit the table I'm thinking what the F is this because the eggs were over med and not one onion in my hash browns, what the F did you even ask me then. Was this even my order and how do you mess up 2 of 4 items when you wrote it on the check. She stopped back and said that she messed up my eggs and I said no onions in the hash browns either and she says the bloody is no charge. The hash browns were pretty good cooked golden/crispy with that soft center that I like. The sausage patties were moist but a commercial mild kind. The eggs were over medium and not sunny side up like I ordered and the toast was the generic white. This would have naan a good breakfast if it was how I ordered it. To my surprise the check said no charge merry Christmas but it was a good breakfast but just not my breakfast and I'm not looking for a free meal so I tipped her $10 and said merry Christmas and I walked out, maybe she was just having a bad morning. read more

What a great find! A small bar and grill in an old repurposed storefront, staffed by very nice people who crank out delicious food. I had the pork tenderloin basket. It was an all-day meal. A huge slab of tenderloin dwarfed the hearty roll housing the lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo within. The loin was about the size of a Fiat hubcap! So before you get a chance to start eating it as a sandwich, you get a filling tenderloin steak. It came with house-cut fries and slaw (or potato salad), for $13 after tax. Toss in a couple cold Patosi's and this is about as good an Iowa meal that a tourist could hope for. Thanks West Dubuque Tap, I'll be back. read more

Stopped here for breakfast today with a friend. I've eaten lunch n dinner here previously, so as we searched for a breakfast place and this place showed up. Saw the picture of The Magic Muffin on the menu so it chose me. Our waitress suggested adding the gravy. I said "deal". Outstanding breakfast. Nice employees. The coffee comes included. What a deal! I've eaten breakfast here a couple times and the food was passable so I was going across town and was running g a little ahead so I stopped in for a drink. Just asked for a simple Beam and Coke. The girl had a hard time finding a glass other than a 20 oz tumbler but she did. I watched as she made my drink and she barely put enough whiskey in to cover the bottom of the glass then filled it up with soda off the gun. That cost me $7.50. Now seven and a half ain't that bad for a good highball when you're out at a club or restaurant but at a little neighborhood bar/greasy spoon and its a terrible drink I think it's outrageous. I told her about the pour, picked up my change, left the drink on the bar, and left. read more

Man-oh-man. I dig this place. Ended up in Dubuque on a whim, and trying to find a late night eatery was akin to locating the proverbial needle in the proverbial haystack. But luckily enough, we were able to stumble upon this little gym. The place is small, but super cozy: staff seems to know everyone, and it has a super relaxed attitude. Also, surprisingly good menu: llama burgers were on the menu, but me and my companion went for the Saturday special: a $14.50 steak (!!!!). Coming from Chicago, this is unheard of. I would give this place 10* if I could! We were looking for a local diner with great food, and we found more than that. We were warmly greeted, made small talk with the locals, and asked for menu recommendations. Our food was amazing, service outstanding. When additional friends came late and joined our table, they were served quickly. The coffee remained full, and we did not feel rushed. When we got ready to leave, we were informed that the table next to us had paid our bill! So touched! In the spirit of Random Acts of Kindness, we gladly paid our waitress and asked her to do the same for someone else. This is not only a place of great food, but great people. Recently moved to this end of DBQ. We're proud to say we think we've finally our bar. What makes the West Dubuque Tap an "our kindof bar" quality: * Super personal and friendly bar tender. The guy just generally seemed to enjoy his job and was observant, but not annoyingly so. * Loved the heavy hand he had when poring a mixed drink. * A few non standard domestic beers on tap (Sam Adams seasonal / flat tire) * Good burger - (though fries - allbeit they are hand cut - they need to crisp a little longer) * The other bar patrons seemed like they had been coming for coon ages. * The bar had a nice and comfy arm rest / pad to lean on. * and a $0.25 candy machine with mini candy bars. An Almond Joy for desert? Don't mind if I do! * I think the capacity max is somewhere around 45 people. It's small folks. Super small and can get a bit loud with the cackling of other patrons. But I personally enjoy those sounds at bar and listen for that kinda stuff when looking to lift my spirits with spirits! read more

Had heard this place had the best burgers so decided to give it a try and quite honestly it wasn't very good. Burger was really dry and over cooked and lacked any seasoning whatsoever. Not sure if they were using super lean beef or just overcooked it. Fries were ok and plentiful and the beer was cold so not all was bad. read more
