We were staying in Galena and took a short drive here. Very good fried chicken sandwich and chicken tortilla soup.. Twisted fries were very good as well. I would come back here...

This is a great downtown spot with amazing friendly service and outstanding steak burrito. The ambiance is bar with ample non bar seating and large and quiet enough for easy conversations

A group of 8 got seated right away on a Saturday night. Drinks came quickly. We ordered. The waitress had to be reminded about the salad with the special. We got a big laugh out of being charged $.50 for its dressing. Really?? And it arrived with the meal, not ahead. Hubby enjoyed that special: baked chicken with potatoes & asparagus. My street tacos with steak were delicious!! There were 3 with lots of meat & veggies. Friend's had taco salads, which were average. The waitress told her choice of meats was included & she specifically asked about steak & then got a $3 charge. ? Another friend had potato bombs & loved them. Guys burgers were tasty & friend's hubby had a good Chicago beef sandwich. The place was really starting to hop by the time we left.

Love this place! We stopped by to watch a game and have a few bevs. Our bartender, Jicole, was amazing and gave great drink ideas. She was also open to making ideas we had.

Met a local friend for a quick lunchtime meal. Space inside was comfy with an old timey bar vibe. We ordered drinks and put in our meal orders. My meatball sandwich was decent with a grilled bun and a mild sauce. The pinwheel garlic parm fries were top notch...I could eat a million of those! Simple meal, well prepared and presented. Would love to return and try other dishes.

Stopped in for a quick visit and to go order in this new reality: a chicken Caesar salad and sweet potato fries that was very much to my liking. Easy to see why a town that isn't necessarily a huge Yelp user destination has so many reviews, a solid 4 stars to which I concur. Good selection of drinks on tap and more, to my liking but alas, was in the midst of a long drive so for another time. One more thing that caught my eye: this town has a *lot* of bars and restaurants downtown. Actually, kind of a stunning amount, so the fact they're a solid four stars indicates this place is the real deal. Would love to make a longer visit at another time when sitting at the bar without a mask and quaffing a beer over their great food is possible.

Three of us stumbled across this jewel in Dubuque. Such an amazing location. Old mercantile building, but completely updated inside! FYI - bathrooms are spotless! Service by such an enthusiastic staff, and knowledgeable on the food and selections. The soups & appetizers were fresh and hot. We started with the Cheesy Potato Bombs - crisp outside, soft inside, incredible flavor. I ordered their meatball sub - perfect baguette, the right amount of sauce mozzarella cheese, and the meatballs were juicy & flavorful. My wife tried the Spaghetti Flatbread - sounds weird, huh? She encouraged us to try a bite - wow! Thank goodness it's a generous size as we all shared it! Nate tried the Philly Cheesesteak - flavorful, gooey cheese (in a good way) and the most flavorful shaved beef. Can't wait to visit again when in the Dubuque area!

Food was excellent as was the service. We were in town on holiday, but would go back to this restaurant when we travel through Iowa again.

Mason Dixon Saloon, as it is unfortunately titled and branded, is one of the only places in Dubuque…read moretoday that provides pretty darn solid ribs and smoked meats, as some of the other BBQ joints have shuttered over the years. I am pleased, in fact, to report that in having tried the ribs, they have smoking down pretty well and churn out some good food. On other visits however, I was surprised to find the pork on the Cuban sandwich and basket to be an odd texture and pretty off tasting. I'd say that the food is pretty standard otherwise, with what seem to be the usual Cisco/USFoods frozen to fried fare. Nothing incredible, but your familiar greasy stuff to get a quick, cheap-enough lunch in. The service over the years has been mixed as well, during the table service hours, the place has had attentive and kind service, but every weekend the place turns into a confused staging ground for what all-too-often seem to be fake-ID toting college underclassmen. At these hours, the place feels uncomfortable for anyone over 22, and it's hard enough to get to the bar rail at these hours any way, much more-so to be seen by tenders that all too often are overstretched if they're even behind the bar to begin with. There's also the obvious gripe with the ambiance. Bourbon barrels cut and stacked along the walls, set against the backdrop of a big crocodile crawling the room -- pretty cool, if not a little kitschy. The obvious problem remains: why the homage to the Mason Dixon line? A symbol of the south? A bygone time? Something to suggest that the ~perfectly fine~ ribs will transport you to another place? My thought is that all too often, and rightly so, it's associated with the border into a land where slavery existed right up until the line was no more. A line crossed to become free, or on the flip side enter a land where it was okay to treat a black man as something sub-human. If that's where this saloon wants to transport me, I'm good. They changed their branding from a confederate flag striped longhorn to what it is now, but the name and the feeling remain. I should hope that they can see that in a Dubuque that is hopefully changing with times and trying to be a welcoming place to folks of all races, colors, and creeds, it may be time not just to retire the flag, but consider what the line their named for stands for to people other than the white guys in their hometown (a group that seems to want the good ol' Southland to adopt the rural Midwest).

Heading out of town after a weekend of shopping, drinks, and good times, we stopped by Birdie…read moreBistro for a hardy breakfast ahead of the ride. There was a 20 minute wait, which was expected at 9:30 am on a Sunday morning. Once seated, we were promptly given water and coffee, which we appreciated as we decided on our meals. As tempting as it is to try something different, I felt drawn to the same type of breakfast I had the day prior (see my review on Convivium); eggs over easy, sausage and bacon, with roasted potatoes. I also decided to order a side order of pancakes - after all, a growing boy needs his calories. As you can see by the photo, it came out perfect... and delivered 15 minutes after we ordered (is that a long time? It can always be faster, but I was ok with it). All of us enjoyed what we ordered and the coffee service was constant. I especially loved the sausage patties!!! Yummy! So I would definitely recommend Birdie Bistro when you're in Dubuque. Is it the best ever (5-star), no - I won't bore you with my reason why (to each their own). But Birdie should be proud.. Opened since 2023, you deliver in every important way: Great food, fair price, attentive service, clean, and welcoming. Great job!
