So glad that I found Norie Thuerauf's The Big House earlier today for a terrific breakfast with a great atmosphere. Less than a 15-minute ride from the Field of Dreams Movie Site, The Big House offers lunch seven days a week and dinner six times, but this was breakfast, and it was pretty good, provided only on Sundays! Located across from a glorious church in the northwest corner of Dyersville, The Big House features a large dining room with sensational breakfast options served in buffet form. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, hash browns, cheesy biscuits, multiple stroganoff dishes, ham, sausage, and spicy meatballs at the end of the room, an all-you-can-eat meal for just $10! And they had great desserts that were outstanding! Bianca, our server, was kind, personable, and attentive; the head cook, Marlene, was interactive and talented. Norie, who has had considerable local success in previous dining establishments, came over and said hello, answering questions and being a friendly host! A solid positive recommendation here, a great place to visit on a Sunday morning. I'll return soon to try some of their Asian cuisines for dinner. So good to see another breakfast option in the Dyersville community!

If you know, you know…read more Traveling to Dubuque for the final stop of the RAGBRAI cycling tour across Iowa, I was fortunate to discover Dottie's Café for one last breakfast before beginning the long drive back to New Mexico. The exterior tells you everything you need to know. It's classic, woven into the fabric of the community--a place where locals gather, travelers are welcomed, and good breakfasts are simply expected. The menu item that caught my eye was the Hillbilly Surprise. I'd describe it as the Midwest's answer to Eggs Benedict: an English muffin topped with ham, an egg, and smothered in rich country gravy. Pair it with a side of crispy hash browns, and you've got the breakfast equivalent of "peas and carrots"--they just belong together. I grabbed a seat at the counter, enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, and soaked in one last taste of Iowa hospitality before heading west. If your travels take you through Dubuque, Dottie's Café is well worth the stop. IYKYK

Service was prompt and professional, and the prices were very fair. Coffee was hot, but taste-wise it was just okay. The food was where it fell flat for us. The pancakes were probably the highlight, and those were good. I also ordered an omelet with cheese, and it came with a slice of melted American cheese on top. I am not trying to be a cheese snob, but we were basically across the Mississippi from Wisconsin, the cheese state, so that one hurt a little. The omelet itself was more like mixed-up eggs with peppers and onions folded into shape, but the cheese choice really threw me off. Kim ordered the Hillbilly Surprise for $9.25, and unfortunately, we were a little surprised too. The same American cheese situation showed up on the hashbrowns, and the gravy tasted pretty canned. The three-egg omelet pricing was very fair at $6.25, with add-ins at 40 cents each, so I will give them credit there. The value is good -- I just wish the quality matched the charm of the place. Sorry Dottie's Family - I wanted to like this more than I did. Cool diner feel, fair prices, and decent service, but the food was just very average for us.

They offer Old Fashioned flights which change out every so often. Currently the flights contain a Southern Comfort, Black Berry, Peanut butter whiskey, and a vanilla Irish Whiskey Old Fashioned. They soup and salad bar is great and they offer delicious homemade bread. They had cheesy hashbrown soup tonight and it was so unique and flavorful! If you like cheesy potatoes, this soup is for you! I also had the filet and crispy chicken combo and it was amazing! The flirt was so tender and flavorful! It had almost no fat and didn't sacrifice the flavor. This chicken is as flavorful and juicy as well. I got the hash browns for a side as well. They were so buttery and crispy, they were perfect! I tried a few of my husbands sour cream and chive fries and they were really good too! You have to try Louisburg Junction next time you're in the mood for a supper club or Old Fashioned!

I strongly agree with the other negative reviews about this establishment. The brunette working…read morebehind the bar displayed completely unacceptable behavior and should not be working in a customer-facing position. We were ignored, made to feel unwelcome, and treated in a manner that felt discriminatory. There is no excuse for treating paying customers this way. I contacted corporate and was told the manager would handle the situation. The manager said he would "look into it," but nothing happened. Instead of receiving a sincere apology or seeing any meaningful accountability, I was offered a gift card and told the employee would be "retrained and coached." A gift card does not make up for discriminatory treatment, and basic respect, acknowledgment, and professionalism should not require coaching. This clearly does not appear to be an isolated incident. Ralphie's review describes a very similar experience, suggesting a larger problem at this location. Corporate needs to conduct a serious investigation into both the staff's conduct and management's failure to address these complaints properly. I will also be filing a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Do not waste your time or money here. Save yourself the frustration and support a local small business that will actually value and respect its customers.
