Another great dining experience. The service was fabulous as our server was very conscientious. I had the filet as I believe their steaks are amongst the best. My husband had the tri-tip. Both were served with yummy cheesy potatoes that appear to be made in-house. The side salad that accompanied our entrees was more than generous and had a most delicious garlic Parmesan dressing. We were served a tomato basil focaccia bread that was a bit dry but still flavorful. We also had the caprese bruschetta that had a light balsamic drizzle on it, making it most enjoyable. The order response time was OK, the wait for food from sit down was about 30 minutes or longer. I had the pick 2 . I got the chicken panini, salad & coleslaw. The salad was just OK. the panini was HORRIBLE. The chicken was very old and smell bad ( to me ) I did inform Chloe the waitress and they didnt charge for it, but this was my first time trying. So very glad that I found this fantastic restaurant on Dubuque's historic Main Street, as it is one of the best meals I have enjoyed recently. I had wanted to visit L May but needed help matching my schedule; however, the stars were aligned on this Saturday night after using a Yelp reservation! An exceptional setting, as it is located within an old storefront that has been completely refurbished and displayed its character throughout with hardwood floors and stunning stonework. Greeted warmly by David (who manages L May and rocks), we were quickly seated and a tremendous server in Lexi, who knew the menu, had superb interpersonal skills, and was a terrific human. She aided us with menu choices, and so glad that she did. I started with a delicious house salad and added a fantastic Caprese bruschetta. I ordered the meatloaf, and wow, it was so darn good, locally sourced beef and pork mixed with a tasty tomato gravy. Aged cheddar mashed potatoes and yummy green beans accompanied the dish, which was spectacular. Chef Tony...you are amazing! I learned from David that L May also does catering and has a private dining room for groups in its downstairs section. Incredible rock formations line the stairwells and tip you off to the building's past. I LOVED this place, and I am so grateful for the excellent customer service and food quality and will make sure to make it one of my GoTo spots in Dubuque County. read more

My friend and I had a girls night out! We were browsing where to eat and found this gem. She really ikes this place becasue of their quality of ingredients and vegetarian dishes. Service was great! Our waters were constanting getting refilled. We got the artichoke and spinach dip, buttersquash sage pasta and morrocan salmon. We could not finish our meal and had to pack them home. We had an amazing experience. We dined here for our fifth wedding anniversary. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was quaint (in the best way), and the service was wonderful. Hello, What can I say about L May! I step through the door and the host with a big smile and in charge greets me. I was seated immediately as i was the only one in my party! Yep, out with all my friends. Anyhow then the waitress comes over and very delightful as well. She takes my order and i had some special exceptions because if my diet. I feel bad sometimes with my needy way!! But she said no problem to any of them. While sitting there with all my friends i just noticed how all the patrons seemed to enjoying themselves with the ambiance and service. My food was excellent! Calling it soup was questionable. It was mor the consistency of a thick chunky tomato sauce. The flavor was good, but I could have eaten with a fork. It was the tiniest cup of soup I've ever been served. My husband's dinner salad was large but lacking in dressing, too many croutons and plain. A little less greens, a few less croutons and some added vegetables would have brought it to the level of the dinner. We both selected the seafood linguine. It was excellent. The pasta had just the right amount of sauce, enough to flavor it, but not drown it. There was plenty of seafood, scallops, shrimp and a few small pieces of fish. I've been living in Dubuque for almost a year now and this was the first time I've been here. How is that possible?! We were able to call an hour ahead and reserve a table. I'm surprised they were able to squeeze us in because the entire restaurant was full when we got there at 7:45. We were seated at what appeared to be the best seats in the house - a little window nook with a bit more privacy. We started with the savory French toast. This is one of the best dishes I've had in all of Dubuque. The flavor combos are so different than what you will find on other dishes around town. I believe it was a duck egg batter on the bread, served with a whipped goat cheese, port wine reduction, some kalamata olives, and tender pieces of lamb. So phenomenal. I would consider ordering that as my main dish next time and not sharing any of it with my boyfriend! For the main course, I got the crabby shrimp plate and the boyfriend got the pork schnitzel. I thought my choice was just okay, but the pork schnitzel was delicious. It's a dish that I'd also come back and order again. They also have a really nice cocktail menu, plus they were doing a $5 rose special that I couldn't turn down. The dessert try they brought over to us looked so great. We will need to save more room for dessert the next time we dine here. read more

Waitress was very professional & did a nice job of explaining everything. Our family style house salad was tasty. Radish slivers with toasted almond croutons in a garlic parm dressing with mixed greens & cherry tomatoes was awesome. I kind of wished I had ordered it for my dinner. The accompanying bread was pretty plain. I had the special--beef tips & shrimp. Mmmm..very flavorful with mashed potatoes to make sure you got all of the deliciousness soaked up! Hubby's slow roasted pork was really good with the poblano sauce & he had mashed garlic subbed for the sweet potatoes. There were a few green beans, which were pretty & good but too few in number. Friend's salmon was good but there were too many olives in the Mediterranean salsa. Another friend is gluten intolerant & they are awesome in that department. They brought her her own bread! Oh ! Great little independent restaurant in the gentrified part of downtown Dubuque. I ended up here because my local favorite, Brazen, is closed on Mondays. I sat at the bar and David caught me right away. Hooked me up with an old fashioned. He used some Iowa made rye. Bitters wasn't Angostura. Gotta take a 1/2 star. Just didn't hit me right. For dinner I had the pot roast special. It came with choice of soup or salad. I went soup which was a shrimp bisque. The shrimp are puréed into the creamy broth. But there were also plenty of shrimp shell bits puréed (or not quite) in the soup. Minus 1/2 star. Pot roast was really solid. Little fatty, but that comes with the territory. Mashed potatoes and real slow cooked carrots and celery. I'd get it again and get the salad next time. Vibe was very fun and everybody seems to know everybody. Turns out that bartender Dave, is the owner. Caught this when he was chatting up the owner of Brazen (the restaurant I had intended to visit). Small world huh? We had excellent drinks (a minor glitch produced a remake, glitch was not having informed bartender of an allergy to cherry, our fault). Portions substantial. Deserts were as good as it gets. Ambience is really likable, comfortable, unpretentious and conducive to conversation. The Server, Rachel, was as great as she always is. They offer outdoor seating and they have a downstairs as well as the main floor restaurant. We sat in the downstairs, which I loved! It's such a cool old building that the restaurant is in.
