LMay is a beautiful restaurant in downtown Dubuque. We recently took our kids and grandkids for dinner--a group of 16- and I was amazed by the exceptional quality of food, drinks, and service. When I made the reservation, the gentleman asked where I was from and what was the occasion. Told him Chicago, and our anniversary. So we were surprised with champagne when were seated. Our server Johanna was superb, food was great, pork medallions and fettucine. Chicken veg soup. All great. Highly recommend. Nice old world ambience as well. A well-known classic establishment in Dubuque, located on Main Street. Lmay is a classic staple restaurant in our family. Great service, food, & atmosphere! Excellent spot for a birthday, date night or just because! We often order the "You're in Dubuque" pizza, Fillet Mignon, or their rotating specials. When we entered the restaurant we waited for several minutes probably about five before the hostess ever came to the hostess stand to let us know that she was working tonight My husband ordered pork schnitzel and I ordered salmon cakes The pork schnitzel was absolutely out of this world-it was served with baked sweet potatoes which were delicious along with an amazing cabbage that was marinated in some kind of a mustard sauce. Prior to the port schnitzel dinner my husband had wild mushroom steak soup with which was another amazing starter I am the other hand had ordered the salmon cakes appetizer for my meal Whatever you do don't order that-it was fishy as a matter fact it was so fishy that I didn't even eat the second cake and I pretty much choke down the first one. The Atmosphere nice but the rooms were very small so the noise level was average to loud the night we were there. Wine selection OK-if you're a wine drinker. Waitress was very good read more

Rustic looking place in downtown Dubuque with terrific comfort food. Our group started with some wine from their very reasonably priced wine list. We shared the crab cakes and the spinach artichoke dip appetizers. Good choices. I had the pork Milanese which was a lightly breaded pork loin which was all Iowa! Food is OK, known for pizza, but pizza is pretty average. Not sure it is worth the price. What really ticked me off was that soda refills are not free. Seriously? I'm spending 100s of dollars but you can't do what McDonalds does for free? To add insult to injury this is not mentioned on the menu and was not mentioned by the server, I expect this when I'm in Europe but not here in the US. Very disappointed with our last experience at L.May. We make one trip a year to Dubuque to celebrate our anniversary. We have been going to L.May for at least the past 10 years each July. The filets use to be melt in your mouth good but this time they were tougher than shoe leather. More like sirloin or some other cheaper cut of meat. The paper table clothes are gone as was the complimentary glass of champagne for our anniversary. The bread was dry and tasteless. We did not see the owner/hostess that use to greet everyone at the door so I am guessing it has changed owners. Sad to see the changes and doubtful we will be back. read more

L May was good. One type of Cabernet. Not a bad glass. Got the Caprese pizza. Lots Of Mozzarella, not enough balsamic reduction, good cracker crust, could have cut up the tomatoes. If they were ripe and delicious, maybe leave as a wedge, but I picked them all off. I bet their other foods were amazing, but I went in specifically for a quick, light meal. read more

I took my boyfriend to L May as a recommendation from a coworker for his birthday. We ended up having to push our reservations back and the restaurant was very accommodating. Upon arrival our table had been reserved and had an adorable handwritten birthday note on display. We were then informed of the $5 a glass of rosè special and were all in. Stopped in for evening dinner during a short weekend trip to Iowa to view fall colors in nearby state parks. The establishment is split into a bar room and three smaller dining rooms which provide a warm and inviting ambiance. Enjoyed the Caprese Bruschetta and L.May Supreme pizza. We had a reservation last night, but no one was at the hostess desk to greet and seat us. There was another couple waiting also. Not the best first impression. We enjoyed cocktails before dinner. Margarita and Old Fashioned were great. We both ordered the tri tip with chimichurri sauce. It was very tasty, but the portions were surprisingly small! Very little meat and potatoes. The carrots were sliced so thin, like meant for a salad. I would rather pay more to get a more generous offering. It is nice a green salad and focaccia bread are included. read more

The staff was very nice and attentive and the atmosphere is pleasant. However the food quality is subpar for the inflated prices. We were charge $30 a plate for some dried up pork chops "medallions" and a plate of chicken with salty brown gravy dumped on it "coq au vin." So disappointed in this place. read more

We went to L May Eatery to celebrate a special night and were very pleased to see the reviews about vegan options were totally accurate. Our server (Rachel) was the right mix of attentive and friendly and helped us find excellent options and a few non-vegan dishes that could be easily modified. We had a great table and were seated promptly after arrival despite how busy they were (having a reservation helped!!). Staff all wore masks and tables were socially distanced. I hadn't been back to this lovely spot in years and it didn't disappoint. I came in around 8pm and the place was very busy. I grabbed a glass of Chianti at the bar as we waited for a table. When we were seated about 15 minutes later, I ordered their soup of the day which was beef stew and their steak salad. My sister ordered their Isle of Capri pizza and she liked it. I tasted it and thought it was way too salty but that was just me. My steak salad was phenomenal. I would come back just for that salad alone any day. The only thing I would change is that I would order my dressing on the side. The dressing was a little on the heavier side than what I prefer but still enjoyable. They also have really great tasting complimentary grain bread with a touch of sweetness for the table as well. We didn't have room for dessert but it looked pretty tasty! read more
