We rolled into town around 8pm on a Thursday night feeling hungry and thirsty. By the time we checked into our hotel and pulled up a list of possible places to eat, there were only 2 options left that weren't fast food. We tried the other first only to find that the internet lies, and its kitchen was closed. Inching closer to famished, we plugged the address for The Smokestack into our GPS and crossed our fingers. We almost didn't make it in since the entrance wasn't where we expected and we had to search around the building on foot through the dark streets of an unfamiliar city. We breathed a sigh of relief when we found our way in and were given a table and menus. After a long debate over our relative level of hunger and willingness to consume carbs, we ordered fries with garlic and asiago, Fried Brussels Sprouts, and a White and Green flatbread pizza. As we were waiting for our dishes in what felt very much like a brewpub retrofitted into an old warehouse, some local musicians started playing the blues. With some seriously good music, the other tables filled quickly, and despite fatigue from a long road trip and hunger, we found ourselves slowly savoring our food so we could listen to just one more song. The venue was definitely loud, and pretty high-energy, so not what we were aiming at to relax over dinner after a long drive. However, every morsel was tasty and the Fried Brussels Sprouts were out of this world. All-in-all, we are definitely fans, and if we ever find ourselves back in Dubuque, we'd go back. I stopped by here a couple of Saturday nights ago for dinner with my wife. We were looking for a place to eat in Dubuque on Yelp whenever Smokestack and it's good reviews came up. So we headed on over and we're definitely surprised by what we saw. This place would have to be the definition of a dive. That's not a bad thing at all but it wasn't really what I was expecting. The entrance is on a side street and immediately upon entering you can see the bar and a stage. There are also a good number of tables throughout the place and I believe there is a second floor as well. However, the night we were there they had live music on the first floor and so we never had reason to leave it. Since we were at a place that seemed to pride itself on cocktails I started out my evening by ordering the Sazerac. This specific one was Whiskey based and I watched as the bartender properly prepared it, swirling the glass with absinthe before adding the rest of the combined ingredients. I enjoyed the taste of it too with the subtle hint of absinthe being a nice addition to the whiskey. Then for dinner my wife and I decided to split the fried brussel sprouts while I went with the sandwich named "chicken one". The menu describes the fried brussel sprouts as being served with a sricha mayo while it describes the chicken one as roast chicken, peppers, onions, asiago and mozzarella. Our brussel sprouts came out first and were quite tasty. They were fried nicely and so had a nice crispy texture while the sricha mayo provided a little extra flavor and heat which both my wife and I enjoyed. After we had finished that our entrees came to the table. My sandwich ended up being on a ciabatta bun and served with a side of fries. It ended up being good as well. The chicken was juicy while the peppers and onions were cooked nicely and the cheese was savory and helped to tie everything together nicely. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I loved that they had live music here and thought that their food was pretty good too.

The staff here are friendly and helpful. They have a smaller menu for food. I only came here for food and some drinks. I did not see any of their shows or musical event. They allow you to choose a wide variety of toppings for the pizzas. The pizzas are tiny and overpriced. They tasted just alright. I also tried their brussel sprouts and rangoons. Both of these items were just alright. I would recommend skipping their food since it can be overpriced and taste mediocre. Their drinks are on the stronger side though. There are 2 bathrooms 1 for men and 1 for women. They are decently clean and are private bathrooms. There are also free condoms near the bathrooms.

Chose to check this place out because it had good reviews. Came here around 6pm on a Friday and we were able to seat ourselves quickly. The waiter came over pretty quickly and took our orders. We got the brussel sprouts and vegetable rangoon for appetizers then personal pizzas for the main meal. The personal pizzas are perfect for one person with 4 small pieces. I split the pepperoni and pineapple pizza, it was a good amount since I did have appetizers. I enjoyed all the food, but I really liked the pizza because they put a lot of cheese on it. The pizzas are very customizable even can get hummus or hoisin instead of marinara sauce! Overall this place was good!

    Fried Brussels. Amazing!!!

When entering the bar you might think you are in a different land, and in a different time! It feels kinda like an Irish pub in a dungeon! But there's a pool table so you know your safe! There are two long bars one on the side room where the music is and one in the main room! I have been here numerous times of the past 10 years and the bar tenders always seem to be the same. And they are great! Prices are great too, you can get your fancy whisky or craft brews, but they also carry cans of PBR, and Old Mil for us on a budget! The music room is great, it has great sound, and Aaron H. who has booked here for years brings in great stuff, a totally curated room of music! The locals just come here cause there is live music and they usually leave satisfied in their choice cause Aaron has great taste! I have been lucky enough to play here a few times and every time I have had a great time! They have a great back patio as well, but like I said they are right off the Mississippi so it might get kinda buggy sometimes! This is a total gem if you find yourself in Dubuque!

However we were able to get her down there anyway. I almost laughed out loud at their definition of "full". In New Orleans or Philly, this floor would only be considered 2/3 full. There was plenty of room which made it great! The acoustics were quite good. Great sight lines. Staff friendly and drinks cheap. No one was smoking in the music venue, only in the casino itself. Free garage parking. There are a couple of restaurants and a Subway if you want a quick hoagie. I did not eat here.
