Me and family had dinner on Labor Day Sunday. I made a reservation for 7pm & arrived 1/2 hr. early and we were seated early . Staff all had masks and tables were spaced 4-6 feet apart. Most customers were mask-free. I felt Comfortable eating inside here. They have gluten free meals and my daughter had a GF pizza . She said it was good. My wife & I split the meatloaf dinner which the staff split for us and it was very good. They put a unique crust in the meatloaf which added to the texture. It was very good. What a waste of my son's hard earned money. The food was a disaster. Horrible & tasteless. Undercooked, overcooked, not seasoned properly, burnt; overall pretty disgusting for how overpriced it was. The appetizer was a joke. In reality it was supposed to be an artichoke spinach dip. What we were served was warmed up cream cheese with some triangle shaped bread and a lemon wedge stuck in it. We waited a long time to be seated. Once seated we waited longer than we should have to get our drinks. Drinking glasses & utensils were dirty. An absolute awful dining experience. So bad we didn't even want that unappetizing food to take home for later. One star is too generous considering the dinner turned out to be nothing more than a huge rip-off. read more

Every time I go home to visit family, dining at L-May is a must. The owners are so friendly and it's such a cozy spot. If you're in Dubuque, L.May is perfect for a nice dinner out. It's been our favorite place to eat in Dubuque since they first opened and they just keep delivering great food and service. My husband's favorite is the meatloaf and mine is the pork shanks. Or favorite appetizer is the spinach and artichoke dip. More often than not, that's what we order. However, the pizzas are excellent as is pretty much everything on the menu. I've said it before and will keep on saying it, L.May is a definite highly recommended stop. My only complaint is that they're so popular that you pretty much must have a reservation to get a table, but that's just the price you pay for the experience. read more

We wanted to go out for a fancy meal to celebrate our anniversary, and had first tried to get reservations at the Woodfire Grill and Brazen Kitchen (both were completely booked); this was our "last resort" and I'm so happy we went here! The atmosphere was quiet and romantic, lots of different groups of people dining (large groups, casual-dressed people, well-dressed date night couples, older people, a couple kids, etc.). I was intrigued by the things i heard from others. When i saw the split plates rule, i ran so far away (flock of seagulls band, song). It is the most disrespectful attempt to profit off customers. I was beginning to think that to eat good in Dubuque, you had to master the culinary arts and do the cooking at home. L May being open starting on Thursday made me wait to get my answer. From the moment I walked into this charming old building, complete with a modest bar (occupied by wine sipping, relaxed, 50-something's when I walked in) and a guy playing 60's and 70's acoustic tunes, I liked the place. Nina identifies herself quickly as my server and I have this feeling I'm in for great service. Slowly, I become comfortably -- as much as possible as a lone diner -- surrounded by two friends enjoying an evening out, a couple clearly unaware of anyone else around, a group having a nice dinner together and an older couple raving about the wine and covering the light topics of their day. I ask Nina about sparkling water because I've given up alcohol for Lent. She suggests Caliber, a non-alcoholic beer from the folks who bring you Guinness. Brilliant. I'd chosen the grilled salmon from the menu online prior to arrival making the order easy at the same time. The salmon was prepared perfectly, just seared outside, slightly pink inside. Every bite was by default a little sweet, because you couldn't avoid a little of the divine smashed sweet potatoes underneath. I'd never had salmon that way, but I'm sure thinking about sprinkling a little brown sugar on the salmon before I put it on the grill. The house salad was very good too, with a nice variety of greens, real bacon, almost flaky croutons (is a panko crouton possible?) and a sweet vinaigrette. Prices are a little more than a regular eatery, but not by much, and this is much more than a regular eatery. If you don't mind going old-fashion and paying with good old greenbacks, you get a 5% discount. They took Discover (another plus) so I got a few more points. Be sure to hit the restroom at the bottom of the steps. On the walk down, think about the stories those exposed stones could tell about the past dealings in this building. If you happen to find yourself in Dubuque, carve out one evening for L May. Bring a friend or significant other and request Nina. read more

My boyfriend and I were in town for one night and were looking for a vegan restaurant. Well, we found out there are none in Dubuque. We saw that L. May listed vegan options, so decided to dine there. We arrived on a rainy Friday night about 15 minutes before closing. We could tell the staff was looking forward to wrapping things up but they said we could still be served. However, our waitress was unfriendly and on the verge of being rude. It was obvious she was upset we were there. Then we heard her at the bar asking other employees if we had come in after closing. A short while later, a man came by and asked how we were doing. I said our waitress seemed upset we were there. He said not to worry, we were fine, to relax and enjoy our meal. He was the owner and said he'd be serving us himself. He went over and above to make us feel welcomed and make up for our initial icy reception. He even talked with the chef and told us he could be creative in coming up with other vegan options for us if we were to visit again. We both ordered the stuffed bell peppers and they were excellent! Solidly average to below average experience. The drinks were terrible. We ordered the holiday margarita, the Italian 76, and a Manhattan that were all awful. They all tasted like water. We sent two of them back and the re-dos were improved but still tasted watered down. I've never had such weak and flavorless cocktails. The food, though, was good. We really enjoyed the caprese pizza-- the thin crust was great, the basil was fresh, and the mozzarella was creamy and chewy like it should be. We also enjoyed the lobster lasagna (though beware: it is crazy rich) which had a healthy helping of lobster inside, as well as the maple-glazed salmon (the lemon mashed potatoes were the highlight, though, of the plate!) Overall, I wouldn't go back here really except for the pizza... and there's got to be somewhere equally good to get pizza in Dubuque. Right? read more

Even after 5 years since discovering it, L.May continues to be one of mine and my wife's favorite restaurants. We're still an hour and a half away, and it's still worth the drive. The Filet Mignon is still my favorite hands down over any other restaurant, including some of the $50-100 a plate places I've been to in Vegas, Chicago, Madison, etc. And it's $25 like it was 5 years ago. Every bite tastes like candy, with a fantastic balance of proper cooking, melted butter, and the blend of delicious mashed potatoes and asparagus that comes along with it. I think what separates them from other restaurants I've been to is the attention to the small things. Great ambiance - nice comfortable lighting, soft and relaxing music at an agreeable volume, earthy decor, and warm attitudes. I've been 5-6 times over the years and they never fail to nail these important aspects of a great restaurant experience. On this last visit we tried the small Chicken Pesto pizza for a shared appetizer. It was plenty to share and had a nice light taste that didn't spoil our main courses. We also later indulged in the chocolate brownie with ice cream which had the pleasure sensors in my brain doing backflips. As for drinks, my wife had a martini with blue cheese olives and a glass of one of their Zinfandel's and was very pleased. Service was warm and friendly with pleasant conversation and helpful suggestions. The hostess also came by a few times as usual to make sure we were doing alright. On several of our trips they've been very busy and wait times can be up there, but it wasn't the case this time around and its never been too unreasonable. We ordered takeout for dinner yesterday during our brief stay in Dubuque. The service was excellent- our meals were ready within 25 minutes of calling. They were neatly packaged and still hot when we sat down to eat. My husband ordered the pork shanks and raved. The pork literally fell off of the bone, and the mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. I ordered the Mediterranean bowl and added salmon. The salmon was cooked to a perfect medium, and the hummus and dressing were to die for. Both of our meals were hearty portions- I actually saved half of my bowl and salmon for a second meal. Hubs loved his meal, but I was a little underwhelmed with mine. I'm a vegetarian, so there were very few meat-free items on the menu. Most of the patrons appeared to be eating pizza, but there weren't even any vegetarian pizza options. I debated between the mac 'n cheese and sweet potatoes. I chose the healthier option, so maybe that's why I was slightly disappointed. Apple crisp for dessert made up for my main course. Drinks were tasty and strong! Our server, Mary Kay, was super friendly and attentive. All of the waitstaff were friendly and there was always someone available to clear plates and refill glasses. After 15 years of enjoying LMay, our anniversary dinner last night was disappointing. We were greeted with Anniversary good wishes, but nothing was said after that. In the past, the server has been tuned in and we've even enjoyed a complimentary dessert. I always start with a sidecar, and was told this visit that the bar "doesn't have the ingredients," which is stunningly bad form, especially on New Year's Eve. Our food was also less tasty than we've come to expect. My wife's salmon was wonderfully cooked, and her sweet potato mash was good. My meatloaf with barbecue sauce was tasty. But she would have appreciated the opportunity to have a veggie she liked--rather than asparagus--and my "cheddar potatoes" had no discernible cheese flavor. Plus the "egg nog creme brulee" was not at all egg noggy and way less rich than what we've had here in the past. It appears that quality has slipped under the new ownership. My friend suggested this place as we were mulling over options in Maquoketa and decided the 25 minute drive was worth it. Fashionable interior with dim lighting, well dressed staff, happy people, and great vibe was a nice first impression. We were seated at a two top with a high chair for baby. I was a little worried that we would get looks because people always worry about crybabies at nice establishments, this was not the case and we didn't have any crying instances. We ordered the shrimp app, and the steaks. I ordered rare, but some was med rare and still enjoyed every bite. I ordered the cab, but was served the red blend, and second glass I got the cab.
