Warning: The Waitress Is a Nightmare My husband and I just had dinner at L May Eatery tonight. The drinks were very good, the food was ok, but the waitress was extremely rude. We never ever had such terrible service in our life. After dinner, we gave 100 dollars in cash to the waitress to pay the bill. She asked us if we needed any change back. We told her we would pay 82 dollars in total, which was the sum of our dinners plus more than 18% in tip. However, she only gave us 9 dollars back. When we told her the change wasn't right, she became very angry and raised her voice at us. She said we didn't give her enough tip! I think she tried to make a big scene to embarrass us in front of other people. In actuality, our payment already included over 18% in tip. But the waitress thought that she could be smart and take over 30% in tip without our permission, essentially stealing from diners by not giving the correct change back! Finally after some arguing, she gave all our change back and said indignantly, "I didn't charge your tip, how much tip do you want to give, you decide?" We still gave her the 18%+ tip, but her behavior made us beyond uncomfortable. We will never go back to an establishment that endorses this kind of behavior, and we advise that you do not either. read more

It's been our favorite place to eat in Dubuque since they first opened and they just keep delivering great food and service. My wife's favorite is the meatloaf and mine is the pork shanks. Or favorite appetizer is the spinach and artichoke dip. More often than not, that's what we order. However, the pizzas are excellent as is pretty much everything on the menu. I've said it before and will keep on saying it, L.May is a definite highly recommended stop. My only complaint is that they're so popular that you pretty much must have a reservation to get a table, but that's just the price you pay for the experience. read more

This probably is the best Dubuque restaurant at present. I am very picky about food ingredients and I felt like the food quality here was okay (not great, but okay) considering the price being charged. The food also was nicely prepared. I thought the service was perfectly fine and that the building was pleasant. Being able to sit outside was a good thing. If this restaurant were located in another city with more choices, likely I would not come back, because I feel that I would be able to obtain better ingredient quality for the price being paid. l'MAY is our favorite 'go to' for date night. The owners always make you feel special and the service is awesome. It feels personal- like every customer matters to them. The staff welcomes you with a genuine smile and hello. Everyone seems to love their job - which is probably why most have been there forever. What an achievement to have that in the restaurant business! My favorite pizza is 'You're a Dubuquer.' Food is always terrific. Bread sinful. Salad is a must have. Great location but we got a chilly draft when the front door opened. Bartenders were very nice. Busy but friendly. Our server came to the table quickly and since we had drinks from the bar, offered water. I asked for lemon in mine but we never got the water. Oh well. The bread was whole wheat and tasty. It was served with lavender honey butter - good but not my thing. I asked for and received plain butter. The house salad was served in one bowl for two. It had a light vingrette and very crispy croutons. Spring greens that were very fresh were so nice. There was enough for 3 servings. Entrees... Steve had the Chipotle Steak Lasagna. It was interesting and well prepared. I had roast duck. This is why they are getting 3 stars, not 4. The duck was perfect! Crispy skin, moist meat. The bourbon cherry sauce? Excellent! The mashed potatoes - great! Presentation... 2 stars. The Potatos were topped by the duck. If only... Potatos were smothered in cherry sauce. My husband and I dined at L.May last night. It was our third experience and we drive in from out of town because we love the ambiance and changing menu. Last night, we both enjoyed two excellent brick oven pizzas and we ordered cocktails. My margarita was very salty and I sent it back, but his mule was amazing. We also enjoyed some asparagus and mashed potatoes on the side. I'm not going to lie, I have dreams about their potatoes. They're phenomenal. For dessert, top notch coffee and a fancy s'mores treat. Higher rating than I would normally give, but because of the character of the place, service (hostess and server), one of the best old fashions i've had, and location it was still a good experience. Outdoor dining was not happening with all of the flies. Don't know if that is a Dubuque thing with the river, but if you are going to have people enjoy the outside you need to come up with a remedy. For the food, the salad and bread were good. Unfortunately the other 3 dishes we ordered missed their mark. The dishes we're flavorful, but there were some key things that made each fail to make us want to order it again. The risotto was more of a rice pilaf that was carmalized on top then topped with mushrooms and nuts. It was dry inside and you needed to use the drizzle they put on the plate vs letting the risotto stand for itself. The pizza we ordered was like a toasted tortilla drizzled with balsamic and topped with a cold tomato and mozz slice. There was not joining of the ingredients like in a pizza, it was more like having a caprese salad with bread. The tacos were flavorful but the chorizo was dry. The creme also had no heat. I would give this place another shot, I would just review and question the menu more before ordering. read more

My boyfriend had the stuffed chicken breast, which liked very much! Service was spot on...our waiter was Justin. The "honey bee old fashioned" will satisfy any palette as well as the "Crabby Shrimp"- very sophisticated savory flavors that will melt in your mouth. As current Twin Cities resident, who was born and raised in SW Wisconsin, I was so pleased to find L. May so close to home! We had reservations at 8:30 pm on Friday night, but arrived a little late. The hostess seated us without issue and mention of our lateness in their cozy dining room. We started off with some cocktails- I had the Iowa-Fashioned which was their take on an Old Fashioned. It was refreshing and I enjoyed sipping it throughout the night. We started with the savory french toast as an appetizer. Our entire party loved all aspects of this dish, the chutney, the goat cheese and of course the french toast. We were all talking about how we could attempt to recreate this dish at home. For our entrees, we had two surf and turf specials and one filet. The steaks were cooked to perfection and had wonderful flavors. When our waitress read the specials, we were told that we would be getting two jumbo shrimp. We were pleasantly surprised to find three large shrimp once our meal arrived at the table. Our waitress informed us that the chef didn't think the two shrimp alone were large enough to be served, so they added a 3rd. LOVE IT! I thought the shrimp were slightly overcooked, but that was the only minor flaw in our experience. The service was professional, present and personable. I can't wait to return! *Tip: Don't bypass the bread. It's made in house and served with some BOMB pepper butter. read more

The food tasted great but they are missing the boat b a few things that could make it a really great place. For the price of the food the staff should be better dressed, not wearing L'May t-shirts. (dinner for 2 with one round of drinks, and a cheese board and nice tip was $90.00) They charge more if you use a gift card, I've never heard of that. They use butcher paper as table cloths, not very nice. The service was very good. Seating on the side with the big bench/booth is not very nice.
