Had dinner here on a Saturday night. There were 4 of us. The waiter told us about a special on a bottle of wine off menu that was half off - we took him up on it and the wine was lovely. Dinners come with a choice of two sides along with bread for the table. The bread was warm and so tasty that we needed another loaf! Two people ordered the Chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms , another the sirloin strip and I got the pretzel crusted walleye which is fresh and not frozen. My walleye was cooked well - I thought with the pretzel crust it would be more crispy than it was - but still good. The chicken was very good as well as the steak. The sides we had were asparagus, fried Brussels sprouts, and Augratin potatoes. Everyone liked their sides. The restaurant is in the lower level of the Desoto Hotel. We had the blackberry bbq ribs. They were done quite well and even falling off the bone. The augratin (sp) potatoes were not good as they had this after taste. The food was luke warm and not hot. We will not be going there again. The prices were quite reasonable. I really wanted to like this place, but there were so many mixed reviews. I also love trying local places while visiting Galena. The atmosphere is historic and I agree the restaurant is quiet. The waiter Cam that was training was very nice. Logan was pleasant too. The raspberry martini and old fashioned was just OK. I've had better elsewhere. I kept seeing recommendations for the French onion soup and crab bisque. Both were good. I also kept seeing rave reviews about the scallops. I also found them to be just OK. They were missing a lemon butter sauce or something else else to it. This restaurant also charges a $10 split charge but you get two sides. The wilted spinach was good and the mashed potatoes were decent. The fingerling potatoes were ok. The mixed vegetables with zucchini squash, broccoli were good. The dessert cart looked fantastic, but we passed on that. Overall, for price point did not match the food. Unfortunately, I won't be back. There's just other places in Galena that offer a better value. read more

My family and I came to Galena to celebrate birthdays. Enticed by the blue cheese soup on menu outside we decided take a break from walking and enjoy a nice dinner. Our expectations were greatly exceeded to say the least. The restaurant is located on the lower level of a beautiful historic hotel which transforms you back in time. What we experienced was a professional, genuine and attentive staff. Delicious food that was well executed and seasoned to perfection without being pretentious. We have had dinner at The Generals many times, often ordering scallops, and potato au gratin and spinach. This time, the scallops were much smaller than usual, had not been "seared", rubbery, overcooked, tasteless. The sides were also tasteless. I ate one scallop and tasted the sides, as did my husband. When the server came to clear the plates, he never inquired as to whether there was a problem. We were there with a group of friends and didn't want to draw attention to our awful food so we had not sent it back (we surely would have if we had been there alone -- each plate was $40). Just finished a wonderful meal, celebrating my wife's birthday. The piano man was playing "Anything Goes" and our meal plan was the same. Great service, our waitress took our order. I have to say we had the menu from the DeSoto house so we knew what we were going to order. My photos show our meals. Excellent job on the cooking staff, our meals were perfectly cooked. AND tasted spectacular. The venue, with a great pianist playing old favorites and show tunes, just was perfect. No rush, just quality attention from our waitress and servers. The BEST meal we've had in a long time. Loved the ambiance of this place! The warm bread they brought right after we ordered was so delicious paired with their herb butter. My mother and I each had a filet mignon, cooked medium. Excellent flavor and cooked perfectly!!My baked potato and asparagus both were delicious. My husband loved his chicken dish as well. We were celebrating our anniversary and they brought us a delicious chocolate chip Belgian waffle with ice cream and fresh whipped cream drizzled with raspberry and chocolate. Logan, our server was excellent, as were the ladies that took away our dishes as we finished each item. We all highly recommend the General's Restaurant. You can really tell when a restaurant is fantastic if you go on an off night when it's not too crowded and the service, the quality and the ambience are as if it was packed! Our server, Jody was outstanding, and I had one of the best Wisconsin old fashions That I've ever had. My family and I are in Galena again and unlike the last two trips we were able to get in to the restaurant. The restaurant itself has old school charm due to the De Soto hotel that it is a part of. The hotel has amazing charm in this sleepy little ghost town however unfortunately that charm is not able to uplift the mediocre food and poor customer service that sometimes is received at this restaurant. The hostesses were amazing and got us seats right next to a ghost attraction in the restaurant. However unfortunately we had a waiter who clearly could not be happy with his job every time we would say thank you he just walked away and unfortunately I'm very old-school so for me that's a major turn off when I'm at a restaurant. By no means was I asking for them to suck up to us but it would be nice to have basic manners of saying you're welcome or two at a minimum fake it until you make it attitude. The salmon that I ordered was tasty but tasty food is only half of an experience when you're at a restaurant that is charging $30 for a piece of salmon. Understand that when you're coming here it is not a fine dining experience it is more of eating in a theatrical environment that is attempting to mix fine dining with old-school charm. If the prices were more reasonable I would try it again and hope that I don't get the same waiter but unfortunately due to the high cost of food for the low quality that you're getting it's not worth it to me. And a sidenote oddly there were a few gnats they were flying around our table which for me is also pretty gross. read more

Where do I start? This place earned the 5 stars! Service was excellent and speed of delivery of each course was perfect. I enjoyed the Wisconsin Sweet Bing Old Fashioned drink which was delicious. I also had the Grant's salad and you must try the blue cheese soup! (Even if you don't like blue cheese) I ordered the strip steak with a side of king crab legs. The crab was wonderful, though pricey. The steak was cooked perfectly and was like butter! They also serve the General's bread with an herbed butter which is divine. Came for an anniversary dinner out of town, the restaurant put rose petals all over the table, comped our dessert, and checked on us throughout the evening. This was the best meal I've had in years! It started with warm herb bread-and-butter. I ordered a Caesar salad to go with my dinner, and it was the perfect size for a side salad. Very good. I ordered fillet mignon medium rare and a baked potato. The steak was perfect, and the potato just the right size. The wait staff were friendly and perform their duties in a timely manner. Our server, Izzy, was wonderful. She was friendly, efficient, and didn't rush us. I also liked the décor and ambience of the room we were in. We expected a lot more than we got from Generals. The food was very good! There was a nice selection of sides to go with the entrees. Our server was struggling and seemed nervous or something, but he was nice. The food runner brought our dish - NY Strip with diver scallops and set down the one plate between us to apparently share. I asked where was my Bone-in Pork Chop? The server came and apologized for not putting in my order, saying that he got flustered because there were so many people when he was at the head of the line, and he forgot. Then the expediter came from the kitchen and said there was a rush on my dish. It arrived and was very tasty. Fortunately, my partner and I like to share our dishes, so we started on hers then we worked on mine when it arrived. They did adjust the bill to reflect the mistake. read more

The service was good, but the food was disappointing. My wife had the scallops, they were blackened and tasty. I ordered the ribeye, and that was similar to what you would get at a Longhorn steakhouse. I expect more from a high end restaurant. The steak was about three quarters of an inch thick, with very little marbling, and it had no crust on it at all. It was like they brought it up to temp in the oven, but didn't sear it. It didn't seem to even be a good piece of meat to start with. I see better cuts of meat at Jewel. I think I could have gotten a better steak at Outback for half the price. read more

We stayed in the Desoto House and this is the bar that's attached to it. We spent some time in here when we would drop purchases off at the hotel before heading out again or when we were done for the night. You can't argue with the convenience if you are staying in the hotel. We only had bad service once and that was during lunch time visit we had. The place was packed and there was one table that was very high maintenance and took up much of our server's time. (Yes, wannabe Jersey Shore table, I'm talking about you.) The rest of the time the service was spot on fantastic. We had the same bartender both Friday and Saturday nights and he did a fantastic job. On Friday night I ordered the cheese dip tray just for something to munch on while we helped decrease their surplus alcohol. It came with celery, carrots and flat bread. When it was served the celery was limp and clear. As soon as my wife said something to the bartender, he quickly replaced it with fresh crisp celery. The atmosphere is nice. It has that old time Victorian feel that you get from the rest of the hotel. They even have a cooler that has been converted from an icebox to a modern refrigeration unit that they keep their bottle beer in. It was annoying that they closed at 11:00pm on Saturday night. We really weren't done socializing, but didn't want to head out of the hotel into the cold February night. read more

Let me start off by saying the waitress was very good. The first thing she brought out was homade focaccia bread. The bread was good, but the knife couldn't cut it so it took a fluffy bread to squished dough. My niece and I both ordered the ribs. You could tell they had been refrigerated. They had that taste. The blackberry BBQ sauce had all the seeds left in it, so it feels like you are eating bone chips. Gross. The au gratin potatoes were very dry. Definitely not worth the prices. Had a wonderful dinner at the Generals restaurant tonight! Out server Thomas was very attentive. My friend and I shared the prime rib and the pretzel encrusted walleye both excellent!!! "I NEED TO EAT" screamed my 19 year old while we were on the south side of Main street Galena. Having been here a few times I knew there was nothing on this side of town and my only salvation, well ok th. Only thing keeping me from throttling this child was a quick walk north to the green street tavern. I have actually eaten here in the past but that was a few years ago. At 3:00 in the afternoon there were several people sitting around but there was still room for 6 wearily travelers. (Including a 19 year old who was just withering away to nothing due to not eating.) The service was a little slow but perhaps sitting down and a tall glass of water, and the knowledge that food was soon at hand made everyone relax a little. The table got a variety of burgers and appetizers and the food was cooked very well. I like a place that asks how we want our cow cooked. They even seamed to cook it as we asked. All in all the experience at this location was a positive one and I would recommend this place to any one with an unruly child or even some well behaved adults. read more

The hotel is a beautiful piece of history! Dinner was a definite disappointment! I ordered filet mignon, which was perfection! The sides were not appealing! The salad was warm field greens not even the plate was chilled! The baked potato was NOT freshly baked or hot, I could barely break the skin with a knife and when I did I could see and taste the cold center! You know when you bake a potato the starch and sugars on the inside harden so that you can't flake and even butter and sour cream can't help! As a side note, mine was not the only old potato, and the greens for the Caesar salads were also not chilled. Ate the steak, paid the bill and will not go back! read more

We decided not to eat too heavy while here so we had the charcuterie plate. There were 4 different cheeses, some meat (a little light on the meat) walnuts, grapes and crackers. It was one of the better boards we've had. The desserts are pretty amazing. We ordered the raspberry cheesecake and the chocolate cake. Both were rich and flavourful. The drinks are great. They know how to make a really good old fashioned (yes, they muddle). They have a good wine selection as well. You have to try the Woman in Black martini (named after one of the many ghosts haunting the Desoto House). The only problem with it is, it's so smooth that you can drink it too fast. Above everything else though is this restaurant's staff. Bartenders, host, bus staff, and especially the servers are just so polite, engaging, and fun to talk with. Logan was our server tonight and he was incredible. The food and drinks got us in the door but the staff will keep us coming back. read more

This place caught our attention this past weekend on our visit to Galena because they offered a $5 margarita on the rocks and we thought we would stop in. Being after lunch and a mini-vacation, we kinda figured it would be nice to stop in for a little bit. The very young staff and very pregnant bartender were quite entertaining. The service was fine, but I was not impressed when the bartender rolled her eyes every few minutes at the new girl that just started the day before. No manager nearby to oversee training and the guest (ourselves included) ended up listening to the bartender complain about how someone called in sick, someone left early and she didn't have time to follow the new server. "she's not even 21 and can't get her own drinks*eyes rolling*" To be honest, I felt bad for the girl. We just stopped for a drink and the margarita was a little too much for mid-afternoon for me so about 1/3 was consumed, and we left. The atmosphere was not the most appealing. read more

[CUSTOMERS PAYING WITH CREDIT CARD BE AWARE! IDENTITY THEFT!] We visited during the St. Patrick's Parade. Customer service and food were OK. However, someone on the staff had stolen by friend's credit card number immediately after he paid our check. There were up to 5 unauthorized purchases made throughout the country within 15 minutes of payment at Green Street Tavern -- to be clear, he rarely uses his credit card and simply wanted to do a nice gesture by treating his friends to a nice meal, so all signs point toward this place. We also overheard another customer on the phone in the lobby complaining to his bank that he had acquired unauthorized purchases as well. Our guess was that someone on staff was taking advantage of visiting tourists for St. Patrick's Day. read more

Wasn't exactly restaurant quality food. More like a quesadilla I could make at home with ingredients hangin around. Shredded cheese, some grilled chicken, tortilla. That's it. Extreme grease factor.
