This restaurant has one of the best views in Galena. Definitely, try the spinach and artichoke dip, beef brisket, reuben and shrimp tacos. Heads up the beef brisket can easily feed two. Its a big portion. Our server Kaylee was awesome! read more

We recently dined here with our extended family and could not be more underwhelmed. We sat outside and the view was gorgeous, hence the 2 stars vs 1. It took a good 10 minutes for our waiter to stop over, then another 15 or so before everyone had their drinks. We're talking a bottle of wine, beers and lemonades, nothing complicated. They must have been understaffed because this was just the beginning. We had difficult flagging down our waiter to order food, ask about specials etc. When we asked another person working there a question about their kids meal he shrugged and said he didn't know. When asked to please find out and get back to us, he walked away never to be seen again. Salads arrived at different times, meaning everyone ate at different times. The appetizers we ordered were good (beet hummus), but the main courses when they finally got there were just ok. A piece of tough mahi mahi with green beans for $26? Pasta wth chicken that looked like it came out of a can for $24? We won't be back. read more

alright, i have to write a review to balance this one out because our experience was superb or maybe they saw the previous review and cleaned up their act. i've been to many a ski resorts in the CA/NV sierras, and i have never had a lunch that wasn't in a overcrowded place, with $8 burgers that only come as burgers (cheese, sides, drinks extra). i couldn't believe the deal here. my wife and i ate for $20 total and was completely filled. granted we had an early lunch, late in the ski season. the service was great and prompt, and the food was surprisingly delicious. upon walking in with my snowboard boots & attire, we thought we were underdressed. this is the only ski resort place i've been to where they had silverware, a wine list, elevator jazz music (which is unusual), and quite an amazing view of the slopes & the river valley beyond. while i don't know if i'd drive up here just to go to the restaurant, this place definitely exceeding our expectations for a ski resort eatery. read more

This is the first time that I'm actually willing to spend time to write a review, which is worth it! During the Labor Day weekend, my friends and I visit Chestnut Mountain for the Apline Slide. It was a HOT and HUMID day around 5PM; so we decided to have a drink and some late afternoon snack before dinner time at the Sunset Grille. Once we walked in, the LADY ask if we are here for dinner, we said maybe some snacks and drinks. Then she redirected us to the other side of the entrance of the restaurant for table. We asked for a table to sit outside, because we want to enjoy the view. Once we got an outside table, we asked if we can sit somewhere under the shade, which there are plenty of empty tables at the back. After the waitress moved our menu to a shaded table, that LADY walk in again telling the waitress those table were reserved. Fine, is understandable since it's reserved, so we moved back to the sunny table. (We do not truly believe all those tables were reserved!) After we ordered our food and drinks, we saw there are 2 parties of people leaving. So we asked the LADY again if we can move over there. And she replied, "All those tables are reserve only for those who wants dinner; since, we did not order food from the dinner menu, we can't be seated there. We told her WE DID ordered food from the dinner menu (some appetizers drinks, salad); as a result, she went to check on our tab. Minutes later another waiter walked over telling us we can't switch tables for the same reason! Those table are for people to have dinner! This is ridiculous and unacceptable! Just because we didn't order their MAIN ENTREE from the dinner menu, we can't be seated under the shade. All of those tables were empty! read more

My husband and I loved this place. We were in Galena mid-week in the off-season, so like many of the restaurants we dined in, we had the place to ourselves. The first thing that we loved was the view- one whole wall is a wall of windows overlooking the gorgeous view. Our waitress was really friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and suggested a wine that my husband loved. We had the bacon, spinach and artichoke dip appetizer, which was awesome. Who hasn't had a million different spinach and artichoke dips? I know I have- but I have never had one with bacon and it was so great (what isn't better with bacon?). The portion was huge, and it was served with tortilla chips that were freshly made- so good. I had the chicken and cavatelli pasta, and it was great. I also had a side salad with awesome balsamic dressing (all their dressings are made in-house). The pasta serving was HUGE and I had to take 3/4 of it home with me. My husband had the New York strip, which was huge and he loved, with portabellas sauteed with wine that were awesome. We even indulged with dessert (yes, there can be room for chocolate even when there is no more room for pasta), and we ordered the chocolate lava cake. It was perfect- dense, bittersweet, and served with vanilla ice cream. We loved our food and the whole experience. read more

When my boyfriend heard that you could watch the sunset while eating dinner he was set on coming here and I'm glad we did. The prices were a little on the expensive side but we were able to find things we liked for reasonable prices. I had called ahead to make reservations but there were not too many people there so we probably didn't need them. They had a pretty good beer list that included and pineapple apple cider. I had never even heard of it before but I'm a sucker for anything pineapple. It was great. The view was beautiful. Definitely a great date place. read more

Stopped in for lunch and the meal was ok. The shrimp tacos were good but not great. The shrimp could of been more grilled but intstead were bland and boiled. The sauce was ok with the shrimp but I had better elsewhere. My wife had a house salad and a tortilla soup which was good. Not hard to mess this one up I guess. We did eat inside and from what I hear, the view outside would be better. I probably would raise it to 4 star for the view but we were not given that opportunity. In summary, there are much better places to eat, the view for outside seating would be good but it is getting cold now in Sept/Oct so that means more inside dining. Go there once but head to downtown Galena IL for much better food. read more

The food was pretty good. I had walleye that i wish would've had more flavor but ok nonetheless. The rest of my table had prime rib which looked like a better choice. The service was great especially since it started to rain and we had to forego our table on the deck. The staff had everything planned and ready to go in case we had to move inside. During the summer, there aren't as many people there compared to winter time for skiing. For a restaurant that big, with only 4 tables and 3 waiter/waitresses, I don't see how service can be so non-existent. The first time i sat at the bar and sat right in front of a young male bartender. He clearly ignored us for 20 mins, asked other ppl who came in after us for what they wanted to drink, and then he walked around the bar, talking to other people, glanced at me and my boyfriend a few times. There was hardly anyone at the bar. Finally he asked us, and we got their signature drinks "Georgia Palmer" and "Galena Jackass" which was mixed well and refreshing. We stilled tipped him 30-40% for mixing a decent cocktail, but service was just horrible...didn't even come back to check on us. Came back again for dinner around 7:30pm, with only 4 tables at the time. Hostess sat us by the window, bus boy brings out water right away. After 25 mins of being seated, no waiter/waitress comes to us....and FOR SURE they knew we were there. All the tables sat in the same area and they were being waited on so they saw us. My boyfriend and I, again, get the glances from them like "what are they doing here". It's not even busy, workers are just talking and walking around, so why was it so hard to come take our orders and ask if we wanted to drink anything else besides water? I was so fed up with such behavior and NON-EXISTENT service, so I walked out....not gonna spend my money here and having to beg waiters/waitress for their service.....RIDICULOUS! read more

A friend and I had a sunset dinner here on a beautiful late summer day. The experience was satisfactory on all levels: food, service and ambiance. We sampled the walnut-encrusted walleye and the scallops entree. Both were generous portions accompanied by delicious sides like garlicky mashed potatoes. Cocktails were ample size and well done. This is one of the best meals served by professional yet friendly staff I have had in the Galena area. The meal was a good value overall. Have been to the Sunset twice now...once by land and once by "sea"! I enjoyed the sea experience to the max, as they ski lift you up to the lodge from the dock on the Mississippi River...and back down again....the view on the way down is breathtaking...As for the food, I would definitely stick to the luncheon menu...our group of five each ordered something different and they was nary a complaint. Service is good, but not cloying...Returning about a month later for dinner, I was not as impressed with my meal, although the others seemed to enjoy theirs. This time there was 8 of us celebrating a cousin's 45th wedding anniversary....They comped us a humungous dessert tray that had four or five different sinfully, deliciously chocolate items on it...two of each so there was more than enough for everyone in our party! I tried eatting here about 4 or 5 times i didnt really find anything on the menu i liked enough to try it a second time and the workers were not very friendly toward me any of the times i went. I tried a burger one time and steak nachos another and i think a chicken sandwich one other time. Maybe im just ordering wrong but I probably will not return read more

TERRIBLE, RIDICULOUS SERVICE experience! My family /party of 12 traveled from several states to gather in Galena for a long weekend. I had made a reservation at Sunset Grille a couple of weeks prior requesting a table for 12 OUTSIDE to enjoy the view. When we arrived (30 minute drive from Eagle Ridge) we were directed to 2 separate tables INSIDE. When I advised our server our reservation was for outside she stated "I realize that but we have a 22 top coming" ( I guess that made our party of 12 second class citizens)! I advised we did not wish to sit inside and certainly did not wish to dine at separate tables as we rarely get to see one another. We did notice several smaller tables outside and asked if we could push them together. The server then stated she would go get her manager. NOTE no apology, no smile, no evidence whatsoever she wished to accommodate our group. After awkwardly standing in the middle of the restaurant for several minutes waiting for the manager to decide what to do with us, they finally, begrudgingly said we could go outside. Again no apology for the wait, the mix up with our reservation or that they were interested in accommodating our group. The server stated " I can't move there tables by myself " as my husband had already started to help her. At this point my brother and 12 year old nephew heard another member of the wait staff call me a B**** ( gee , sorry to be a bother to ask for the area we had reserved) That was our cue to depart.... So back to Eagle Ridge we went. Called on the way to Wood Stone where they whipped a table for 12 with a view by the time we arrived. I really love this place! We dinned here on a Friday night a few weeks ago and we were very impressed on our dinners. Two of us had the Walley fish and it was perfect. Melt in your mouth. My husband had a steak that was so big, he couldn't finish it. Very tasty. My brother had the ribs and they were delish! From the appetizers to the main courses, everything was great. We also had the breakfast buffet on Sunday morning and that was perfect. Not a lot of choices, but just enough not to over eat! I can not wait to go back! My wife and I had a delightful lunch there yesterday (Wednesday). Servers almost outnumbered customers so it was a slow day there; one of our servers says it's busier when they have meetings and conventions there, and definitely in ski and summer vacation seasons. First off, the view is wonderful. Looking down past ski chairlifts to the Mississippi River, and then across to forest and farm land in Iowa, and with the brilliant colors on the trees on this mostly sunny day. Great view. Service was very good, polite and attentive. I had a reuben that was very good, not too big and bread-y like some restaurants, just the right size for a nice lunch sandwich, and the corned beef was excellent. My wife had a BLT that she also thought was very good, with excellent fries. I had their homemade chips with my reuben and they were very good. We had a wine and tea, and they have a nice choice of affordable wines, with a decent pour. Afterward we went to the deck outside and stood enjoying the view for a few minutes before heading home. Our server pointed out the "zip line run" which is actually a cart on a wire that leaves the ground going backward up to a tower that looks to be about a hundred feet high, and then it releases you full speed back down forward to the starting point at the ground. She had done the ride and enjoyed it, but luckily it wasn't open until 3pm and we had to leave by 1pm so we didn't have time to get nervous about taking it. : ) All in all a very enjoyable lunch, just 25 minutes scenic winding drive south of downtown Galena on Blackjack Rd. (PS. We booked on Open Table and that worked out fine, except the restaurant staff seemed to be confused about the name on our reservation and when we got home a couple hours later we had an email that the restaurant had canceled our reservation after our lunch was over, so we lost the Open Table points, but I'm sure this was just a mixup at the hostess desk.) read more

It is worth coming here for the view alone! Our service was very good. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Do not order Chicken Fusilli! It was the worst meal I've ever had in a restaurant. Horrible Chef Boyardee flavor, (canned?) chunked chicken & over cooked pasta. The server responded to our complaint by calling this a "simple dish". Fortunately, I shared the Mahi Mahi Special with my sister & that was excellent! The Prime Rib was excellent per a member of our party. The steaks were enjoyed as well. Although the Scallops were excellent, you only get 5 with your dinner. We'll be back for the views & the Alpine Slide on the property. Sunset is the best time to visit - glad I brought a jacket because the temperature drops quite noticeably in the evening. read more

Definitely would go back -- the food was really good, reasonably priced, service was pleasant - the only problem we had with service was that it took awhile for the server to bring us our bill, but the views made up for that shortcoming - views of the sun setting over the Mississippi were worth waiting. We went during the week so we could enjoy a nice quiet evening on the deck - the sunset was so beautiful. We didn't stay in the hotel, just came for dinner. The hotel definitely needs updating - but that wouldn't stop us from visiting in the winter so we can ski. We heard that they are in the process of renovating some of the rooms. We were told that the bar was recently redone and it was nice, we enjoyed another glass of wine after the sun set. read more
