There are tons of places in Central Texas to get really good barbecue, but I now know that almost none compare to Old 300. I was there with colleagues last night, and it was an amazing experience. Like a lot of reviewers here, I'm a brisket guy. There was chicken on the table, and ribs. I didn't even try them, although I heard really appreciative sounds around me as people did dig into those meats. I went straight for the brisket and the sausage, and they were a delight. Mind you, by 6 or 7 at night brisket has been in the smoker for a very long time. But with that said, the brisket at Old 300, at night, is a delight. It falls apart, and its flavor is accented by just the right concentration of rub. Not overpowered, but sweetly teased to a peak of flavor. And the sausage is as it should be. Its flavor is complex. It has kind of a career in your mouth. I ate WAY too much. And this was before they brought out the smoked cheese cake. I'm not going to tell you to save room for it. Do what I did. Stuff yourself on meat, and then MAKE room for the cheesecake. Insane. We got a tour of the kitchen from pit master Ladd Pepper (yeah, that's his name). He explained his process with passion and pride, as he loaded a dozen briskets into the restaurant's huge professional smoker. Ladd's generosity and openness was typical of the whole staff. Being a typical reserved Englishman I find myself having to use the only term that describes the Old 300 - AWESOME! I've never had a BBQ like it. The brisket just melts in the mouth; the ribs are incredible and the cheesecake cannot be bettered. The history of this place makes it even more worth the visit so make sure you get a tour. This is exactly what I needed. The friendly service assisted with our ordering. It was just the right amount for our group. The ribs, brisket, sausage and chicken were seasoned and juicy. The side order of cole slaw and potato salad was very good. Of course s with all BBQ restaurant the fixin bar was also well stocked, clean and fresh with the pickles, onions, peppers and hot or mild sauces. This place has a delightful atmosphere, friendly staff, and wonderful BBQ (and sides!). We went there this past Saturday and really enjoyed both the drive and the food. If you love to eat BBQ and take BBQ road trips then you should put this one on the list. I live in the area and eat here several times a month and it is always solid...consistently high quality and great flavor. The atmosphere is interesting and festive and they offer a good value. The location is ideal, just off the Blanco town square with direct views of it including the beautiful historic courthouse (some outside patio seating as well for nice days). I hit the weekday lunch specials often and they are always delicious at a great value. I've eaten a lot of BBQ in my days including many of the famous ones (ie Lockhart, Llano, Driftwood, Austin), and I don't think they have anything over Old 300 brisket or pinto beans. For those who like sauce (purists cover your eyes), they have a couple of tasty options. Well worth a visit if traveling Hwy 281 or 290. read more

Great barbeque! Got there late so choices were limited to brisket and pork loin but both were outstanding. About the only way to improve the experience would be to add green beans or some other lower carb side for those of us watching our girlish figures! Thank you for the jalapeño sausage! The casing is snappy & the sausage is spicy & smooth, not lumpy or gristly. Then there's the brisket, which has a superb crisp coating with a tender, moist meat. We got the lunch special sammies (1/4lb Sammy, side & bev $7). The beans, all you can eat, are piping HOT! but a bit salty. Stopped by on our way back to Houston and very glad we did! We had 1.5 lbs of pork ribs, Bbq turkey breast & a turkey breast baked potato. Everything was delicious and they have tons of extras for your meal: help-yourself to sliced bread, pickled onions, pickles and 2 types of bbq sauce, spiky and sweet, both of which were spot-on. The decor is very quaint, lots of reclaimed wood & a surprise early-20th-century-scale-turned water dispenser. Great bbq joint all-around. read more

The beef passes the pull test and the flavor was yum. My wife had the pork tenderloin and she absolutely loved it. Great coleslaw! The pintos had great taste but needed to cook a little bit longer. I'll definitely come back. read more

Ribs were fantastic. They were done perfectly with most of the fat cooked off but still very moist. Dry rub was good but didn't overpower the smoked flavor of the meat. Although the rub was a tad too salty, still some of the best ribs I've had in a while. Creamed corn was good too. read more

Well to start with the sodas were flat, the bbq sauce was ice cold, nothing like putting ice cold bbq sauce on your luke warm meat, hmm, and the cole slaw was dry. The meat was pretty good though. Stopped by last night while visiting the state park. Order chopped and sliced bbq sandwiches, a pound of brisket and a half pound oder sausage. Everything but the sausage was great. Sausage was all but inedible. Too hard and over cooked. Sauce and sides were great as well. Would recommend earing here read more

This is sorta a mixed review, wife an I drove out from Austin, we took the long drive out to this place after watching it on "what would you do" its an awesome small town, the people we came in contact with at 300 were friendly and really nice. The staff was great, especially the tall lady that comes out on the floor. The food was amazing and I will go back for that most definitely. The lady at the register was nice, friendly, knowledgeable, until I ask asked a question about seating, (INSTANT ATTITUDE, maybe it was a bad day) I was caught off guard because it was so sudden.. none the less.. I highly recommend the place..everyone overall are good people and excellent food. read more

As a local I want to see them succeed. They are going to have to try harder though. I work and play and live around Blanco and many of us are disappointed in the price vs. quantity that we have gotten. The one meat special with one side had two meager slices of brisket that was a bit dry for $7.00, drink extra. This was mediocre. Tried the lunch special a few days later, Chopped Beef sandwich, a side and drink for $6.00, was a winner. Went back a few days later and discovered the lunch special ends at 2:00 and the dinner special doesn't start until 5:00. You better take care of your local base or you're going to be scrambling to make it. read more

IF YOU LIKE FATTY BBQ, EAT HERE. We are locals and want to support our restaurants, so we were excited about a BBQ place here. Before, we would head to Black's in Lockhart, or the Salt Lick in Driftwood. We ate here four times, but NEVER again. Their chopped beef sandwiches are made from all the meat cuttings from the day's orders, which are chopped up for the sandwiches. I asked them and you should, too. YUK . A good BBQ place will cut lean slices and chop them up for the sandwiches. We had a sliced beef sandwich on our last visit and it had so much fat that we would not even feed to our dogs. $37 for the fatty meal. They said we have to ask for Lean or Fatty slices, but they never mentioned it, and they don't take the initiative to ask their customers. Very POOR. Only the beans are good. The cole slaw is old tasting, and the potato salad is dry and has very large lumps of potato. We thought the slaw or potato salad was just a one time thing, so we ordered several times, thinking it would get better. WRONG! So, back to Lockhart. Live and learn. read more
