I was looking for a quick dinner before heading home and Okonomi fit the bill because it is currently operating as a takeout-only operation. You can either call ahead or order at the door and if you do want to eat your food as soon as possible, there is an outdoor setup where you can chow down even though there is technically no outdoor dining. I ended up going with the Spicy Tuna Mazemen, as I wanted some noodles and after asking the staff for recommendations, he said that this was a popular item and went well with an onsen egg (slow-poached egg), which I decided to add on. The mazemen normally comes with tuna confit, fresh greens, mazemen noodles, a drizzle of sesame oil, and togarashi spice (Japanese spice blend). It is definitely spicy, but nothing too hot fortunately for those wondering how spicy the mazemen may be. It may look like a lot of togarashi spice, but overall, I was able to finish the whole thing without burning my taste buds. The dish overall was quite flavorful, as it was savory, spicy, and yet also creamy thanks to the addition of the onsen egg. The recommendation was on point as you can mix in the poached egg's runny yolk around with the rest of the ingredients to mix the flavors better. The creaminess of the cold egg really helps calm down your taste buds as well from the spice. The fresh greens are great to add a bit of crunch to the otherwise chewy noodles, which were great for slurping, but did feel a bit too chewy for my preference. The tuna bits were nice and full of umami, but because they were tiny pieces scattered throughout the mazemen, it was hard to tell how much tuna was even in there. I'm wondering if using larger pieces would be better and I'm curious if raw tuna sashimi would go well with the dish as well. Anyways, the dish was delicious and full of flavor, but it did feel a bit light for the price. You can definitely tell that Okonomi uses high quality ingredients though as every component of the mazemen stood out and worked well with each other. I have heard read good reviews about the bentos as well as the uni, so hopefully I can try them next time. The Hokkaido Bento was chockfull of seafood like uni, crab legs, scallop, salmon, and ikura. All this sat on some warm 7 grain rice, tsukemono (pickled veg), and ginger. You could easily taste the freshness in each morsel of seafood and it paired perfectly with the more crunchy textures in the rice. The Unaju bento was equally generous, filled to the brim with fragrant, chargrilled eel that simply fell apart when you bit into it. This was easily one of the best breakfasts I have had. Just wow. The hokkaido bent box is so splendid! The scallops, salmon, and snow crab is really fresh. Finishing the hokkaido bento box leaves me wanting another proportion! The breakfast bento is so hearty and filling- it had a mix of different veggies and a grilled fish. Incredibly disappointed with my experience at Okonomi. Despite all the hype of this place, and the rarity of a Japanese styled breakfast in NYC, I thought the food was underwhelming at best. Went with a friend at 11am on a Sunday, and we were lucky to be immediately seated for brunch. There was no menu option since they only serve one item, albeit with two different types of fish - swordfish and bass. I got the swordfish and she got the bass. They charge a flat rate of $32 for breakfast tax non inclusive. Tip is not required at this restaurant FYI. AMBIANCE: I really like how compact yet spacious the design of the restaurant is! It probably at most seats 12 people, so it could get quite crowded. It has an open kitchen where you'd be able to see the chefs cook your meals in front of you. Opt for the bar seating, I'd personally like interacting with the chefs there! PROS: Staff was friendly and helped guide us through the menu. That probably was the only saving grace of my experiences here. CONS: Where to start... first off the supposed star of the dish which is the swordfish. My swordfish was incredibly bland, like talk about a blander fish. There definitely wasn't enough seasoning on top, and the wish was wayyy overcooked. It was dry, stale, and once swordfish gets overcooked incredibly hard to chew and swallow. The vegetables itself on the plate were sort of crunchy, and the pickled radishes tasted quite bland. There was a bit of salad on there, but I didn't touch it since I was quite disappointed with what I was presented on the plate. Miso soup was also weirdly tasting. It seemed a lot saltier than what I am used to in other Manhattan Japanese restaurants. Also, in their miso soup they had small diced bits of onions I reckon? That seemed a little off-putting to me when I drank their soup. Tamago and the rice it came with was okay. Just nothing special or memorable from eating those. Portions were incredibly tiny, small, and underwhelming. For $32 dollars I'd expected something to blow me out of the world. Neither the food was good, nor was it filling. Definitely really disappointing. I thought with the quality of food and the portions we got it should be worth no more than $20. OVERALL: I'm keeping it two stars since I really liked the decor here and the staff were relatively friendly. But seriously, food was definitely lacking, price was a little outrageous for what we good, and flavors were incredibly bland. 3.5 stars. I think I echo a lot of reviews when I say Okonomi is good, but simply not worth the price they are charging. If you want to try this place, come before it opens at 10am or else it'll be a long wait! There's only about 12 seats (two 4-tops, and a few counter seats) and they only seat complete parties. They only have one prefix set for $32, but they allow you to choose the type of fish you get (I think this changes based on what they have). That day, I think we were given the choice of a salted mackerel, or a miso cod. Here's what it comes with: Miso Soup There are soooo many ways they could have made this not a throwaway dish. Simplest way would have been just to add some ingredients in there that don't look like it came from a instant pack. For example, tofu, daikon, carrots, fish, clams, etc. This was really just plain miso soup... Small bowl of purple rice Good, but really small :( Fish + 5 mini side dishes I chose the salted fish, which I thought was pretty good until I tasted my husband's miso fish. SO MUCH MORE TENDER haha. But honestly both were good and were a great accompaniment to the rice. The side dishes were MINI for sure, smaller than what free banchan offers at a korean restaurant. Not sure why... we got a tamago, a small bunch of spinach, potato salad, pickled vegetables (that weren't really pickled enough), and I think eggplant. Looks like a super pretty plate, but it was just sooo little food. I know this is supposed to be traditional japanese breakfast, but I've had these in Japan, and they usually offer a lot more variety and amount (even in a hotel, which is usually more expensive!). I've tried their uni miso maze and their Hokkaido bento box as takeout. Both were delicious! The Uni Miso Maze had the perfect noodle texture and I loved the flavor. The only criticism I have for it is that I wish there was more sauce. I felt like I had to really strategically portion the noodles with the uni miso to make sure every bite was not bland. Today I got the Hokkaido bento box and it was very delicious! For the quality and the amount, I think the set price is very reasonable. The fish was very fresh. It comes with crab, salmon, uni, ikura (roe), and scallop sashimi. My only two criticisms for this was that the crab was quite bland and that the soy sauce given was a bit too sweet for my liking. With the first few bites, I thought the sweetened soy sauce was great, but halfway through I was over it and preferred the standard soy sauce. The ikura and crab are on a bed of rice and I thought it went great together. I can't tell you which fish was my favorite as all three sashimis were equally fresh and delicious. I also enjoyed the added pieces of grapefruit and pickled veggies (carrots, radish, etc). Finally came by for Saturday brunch. This was a place I was very excited to try, but it really was just "a-ok." My friend and I had arrived just at little before 10AM and got seated right away. There are two tables of four seats flanking the entrance and a bar of four seats along the kitchen area. They serve the set meals with your choice of fish (I think for us it was some type of trout and some other fish's collar) and other toppings like ikura (fish roe) and onsen poached egg for additional cost. I got the trout, and it was only alright. I had such high expectations listening to how they prepared it (wrapped in a type of leaf overnight and then cooked), but then when I tried it, it was not impressive at all. It was dry and bland. The size was also a little bit disappointing. For a main character for a dish set, it sure did not look like one. The fish almost got lost along with the other small sides. It didn't help that it was only about the size of index finger and middle finger together. The other sides were okay. I liked the tamagoyaki (that cube of egg custard) because the sweetness was subtle and not too much. It was also very egg-y. The miso soup was great as well with the radish they added. Rice was also great. Meal ranged from $32-35, when we went with no additional toppings. Server was friendly. Restaurant was clean. Food was alright. Would likely not make the trek out here again. Definitely try to get here before 10:30AM to avoid too long of a wait, but they're also pretty good about calling parties up when they have seating opening up. read more

Food 2/5: I ordered their take on a Tonkotsu Ramen ($24) and my friend ordered their Spicy Tuna Mazemen. The ramen overall was below average- the noodles were very thin and not very chewy, there was very little protein, and the broth was very watery and lacked flavor. From what I recall and tasting a little bit of it, my friend said the mazemen lacked flavor and the texture of the noodles were not very pleasant. Having been to Japan and trying other ramen spots around the states, this ramen was very disappointing even when not taking into account authenticity. The food overall lacked flavor and the portions were very small. Though lacking in flavor, it was edible and we were able to finish our food within 5 minutes. this little japanese restaurant in williamsburg impressed me. it is very intimate and the staff is attentive. their menu consists of some some appetizers, sashimi, ramen and broth less ramen (called mazeman). we got this potato appetizer, the scallops and each had our own broth less ramen. there was 3 of us. one had the tuna belly. i had the bacon and egg. my friend had the bacon and egg but no egg - they were nice enough to give me her egg, which i later appreciated the extra egg. it creates a delicious flavor mixed with the sauce at the bottom. the drink menu is sake and beer. we all had some of the canned sparkling water. this was such an intimate, quiet restaurant that i'd love to try again. read more

We ordered bento boxes delivery for Valentine's Day. Initially, we were a bit hesitant because the food was quite pricey. After chowing down and savoring every last grain of rice, we decided that it was well worth the price. Everything was fresh and seasoning was minimal but delicious! We ordered the Uni Miso Maze, Hokkaido Bento, and Ikayaki Bento. The bento portions looked small but were quite dense and filling. The packaging was minimal and lovely. The food was nicely presented in cute thin wooden boxes. The seafood was so good! I'm usually not a huge fan of uni because I think it tastes a like sea poop but I will still eat it. We loved the Maine uni, which was surprisingly sweet and savory with very subtle "sea" taste. The grilled squid was cooked to a perfect tenderness. They have changed their menu so there is only the roasted fish bento boxes (breakfast bento) available. No more hokkaido bento box or ramen. However, the roasted fish is still a very buttery and flakey fish. My bento box came with pickled veggies, some tamago, potato salad, squash, and a mix of purple/white rice. The price has increased to $30 a bento box, and no tip is required. The potato salad was a little salty, but it balanced out the mild flavor of the fish. It is very traditional looking and it is omakase style where you just pick the type of fish out of two options and they handle the rest. We put our name down for a table for 4 on the weekend at around 11am and then got seated about 45+ minutes afterwards. We explored the area a bit, so it wasn't a big pain. There is no menu at this restaurant, but they offered us a broiled marinated amberjack or a salted mackerel in the set breakfast which came with a miso soup, bowl of rice, and plate of small side dishes (pickles, veggies, etc.). Also, you could add a poached onsen egg and/or ikura (salmon roe) along with the dish. Breakfast: - Miso soup - Rice (purple grain) - Side dishes: small arugula salad, tamago (baked egg), tsukemono (japanese pickles), potato salad, turnip stems. - Fish (amberjack or mackerel): Both fish were about the same, but the amberjack had a bit more flavor since it had a sauce on it. Came here with friends to try the Japanese breakfast set, the restaurant is super small, the counter can accommodate max 4 people, and they have two to three tables only. The breakfast is offered between 9am to 3pm, the menu is straightforward (regular set vs large set). The large set has more veggies. You can also add onsen tamago or ikura on the side. We all ordered the large set with onsen tamago. The presentation of the breakfast set was beautiful, the portion looked small but actually pretty fulfilling. Before coming, I heard great things about Okonomi so we were excited to try this spot instead of our usual heavy brunch choices. We arrived around 11 and were told a 50 minute wait - it looks like they fill the restaurant 12 people at a time, so they gave us the next round. It was interesting and maybe unnecessary? that we had to put down a $20 deposit to put our name on the wait list. I understand why, because there are literally only 12 seats in this tiny hole in the wall, but I've never been asked for an upfront deposit. and the wait list is long enough, they could probably call the next person in line if someone doesn't show up. I love the simplicity of the restaurant. There's no menu since they serve one set for $29 with the option of a type of fish. You can also add an egg ($2.50) or egg+uni ($6). I highly suggest ordering the egg to mix into your rice!! Each set comes with a 3 oz fish of your choice, pickled vegetables, egg custard, green beans, beets, spinach, rice, and miso soup. My group and I got to try a variety of dishes: tsukemono, spicy tuna mazemen, okonomi shoyu, and Ankimo Miso. I went here with a group of 5 and even though there was only 3 tables ahead of us, the wait was still 1 hour. The tsukemono was such an interesting dish as I never had clam lips before but it was good. The mazemen noodles are al dente and while I wasn't a fan of it, other members of my group really enjoyed. They were so generous with their uni for the hokkaido and mazemen which was great for the price and all the sashimi tasted really good and fresh! Okonomi serves the traditional Japanese breakfast with two add on options: ikura $6 and poached egg $2.5. The set itself is $32 with a selection between bluefish and swordfish grilled with miso paste. The set also came with a bowl of rice, miso soup, grilled eggplant, corn salad, marinated vege and beans with mustard paste. Although I liked the swordfish over the bluefish, both fish were extremely tender, you will not be disappointed by the flavor, gotta love that miso. We also liked the tamago and eggplant. The tamago was very sweet. Overall the assortment was great seasonal selections. At the price tag, we were very surprised about the portion, yes, very light. Everything was lightly seasoned and cooked, and the poached egg went extremely well with the rice. No doubt the quality of food lived up the standard, but the portion (or price) did not. No tip required, service was great and on par. I would consider it a one time try, no need to return often. Small restaurant tucked away in Williamsburg with very nice vibes. But when I say small, I mean very small. Most likely you will have to share a table with others and the cons of that is definitely overhearing convos and having your convos heard (I unexpectedly heard about a girl's rant about school, tbh same tho). Aside from that, everything was wonderful. To start, you have two choices of their daily dishes. We got one of each set and wow. I normally don't like fish but the fish was cooked extremely well; nice crispy skin with tender flesh. Lots of freshness and none of the fishiness. 3.5 stars I've never actually had a traditional Japanese breakfast at a restaurant before, so I was pretty stoked to try Okonomi. No lies, I was also lured by how instagrammable the pictures on Yelp looked... The restaurant is located in Brooklyn and very tiny - seats perhaps up to 10-12 people at most. No reservations taken, so come early to avoid waiting in line. Okonomi serves traditional Japanese style breakfast based on a variety of fish available on the day. You also have an option of adding uni and onsen egg on your rice for an additional fee ($6 for uni, $3 for egg). Total damage comes to around $25-35 per person depending on what you order. The fish was too dry for my liking, but fresh. The pickled vegetables and kale were just OK - nothing spectacular about the flavor nor the way it was prepared. The uni was actually a little on the fishy side, which made me sad I spent that extra $6. At least they did serve purple rice which was yummy! Miso soup was good too, although not the best I've had. Overall -- this place is good if you have an extra meal to spare while on a trip to New York but I wouldn't go out of the way for it. Overhyped and overpriced. Wait: My friend and I came at 945am on Sat morning to ensure we didn't have to wait. Total of 12 seats. We didn't have to wait since we were the first 12 people. But yes there were already many people waiting before the place opened. The hype is still there. Food: Tiny portion of cold uncooked little dishes. Fish was alright. The rice and soup were warm and tasty. The poached egg was just blah. For $29, this definitely didn't feel like it worth the price. The food isn't bad but ya.. Service: Pretty slow. Bright, colorful, and a beautifully well-thought meal deserving for instagram and our bellies. What you must know: -there are 12 TOTAL seats. I should know, I counted them. It's small and cozy. I like it. -No reservations except for the Saturday night omakase -Ichiju sansai = breakfast/lunch sets (consisting of fish, soup, veggies) on the weekends/weekdays. Usually 1 or 2 additional side options offered (my visit, they had poached egg and/or uni) -weeknight ramen -8 course tasting menu (omakase) Saturday nights $140/pp -no tips accepted, pricing includes tax! -if there's a wait, they take your number and call you! Our experience: on a rainy Saturday 2 weeks ago, my date and I arrived. Lucky for us, it was only a 15min wait. We were immediately offered tea and given an overview. Our eyes and mouths consumed the sea trout in miso soup, 7 grain rice, and assortment of pickled/non-pickled veggies. Fish was precisely cooked with care (I see you, Chef, using that thermometer!). Of course, uni and egg were offered and we accepted the gluttony of it all. Also get some sake, I know I did. $30/set with tax included! With no tips accepted, what a winner. Despite being booked two weeks out for both breakfast and dinner, we got very lucky with Okonomi having space for walk-ins (which they do a great job of balancing the reservations and accommodating walk-ins IMO). Everything on the plate was super tasty-- all the flavors compliment eachother perfect. The roasted green tea was delicious as well. Despite the smaller portions we still left feeling quite full. Staff was kind and attentive as well. Overall such a nice, quiet, yummy start to our morning!! read more
