Great job! Ohana Tree Services was the third tree trimmer I called for a quote. I expected their price to come in somewhere in between the first two companies but was surprised theirs was the lowest! And the clincher was that they could get to the job the same week! 2 mango trees, 1 breadfruit tree and about 1/2 dozen other trees needed trimming. Rocky said they could do it in a day and I was a little skeptical. The other trees were really tall, 25-30 feet. They also did a coconut tree which I didn't think needed trimming. We have 2 very large mango trees that were not trimmed for over 5 years and various other trees that I wanted to get rid of around our yard. I called for an estimate in the morning and Rocky was able to come to our home for an estimate on the very same day. Originally had 4 areca palms in my back yard which I wanted removed due to their height and constant maintenance. One was removed by 3 guys who wanted it to re-plant it for one of their projects and it took them about 3 hours to do it and they left a mess which was okay since they did it for free. Hired another guy to remove the 2nd for $200.00 but I ended up helping him and it took about 4-5 hours. With 2 remaining, decided to try OTS after reading the reviews here. Rocky came, quoted me a reasonable price, especially since I experienced the work it took to remove them and returned within a few days to do the job. Our yard had a challenge-- over grown cactus everywhere. With thorns and milky sap, this was a messy potentially dangerous job. Plus this mess was down a mountain slope! Rocky provided a written estimate on the spot ( which was very competitive in price), but it was his knowledge of the plants and scope of work that secured the job for OTS. Rocky called me back shortly and gave me a fair price to remove 2 tree stumps that were on our property. Let me paint a picture for you...my parents are now in their 70's and have a HUGE yard which they have let get OUT OF CONTROL! Huge mango tree and Lychee tree had both grown so wide they were touching the house and power lines. The leaves from the trees are never picked up, the branch and weed cutting my dad would do every now and then would remain in piles on the ground as what he calls 'mulch' along with any fallen fruit. I really think my dad, who was raised on a farm in Kahaluu thinks the dirt would eventually eat up this "mulch". So imagine, piles and piles of "mulch", multiplying dead flowers, multiplying dead bird of paradise, plumeria trees, a papaya tree, weeds, dead leaves and braches surrounded my parents yard...and when you add in broken chairs, old dog houses, rusty trash cans, and an old plastic jungle gym...they've basically been living in a DUMP. New Years Day my husband noticed the DUMP and asked me to find a tree trimmer because the trees are touching the power lines...and they babysit our daughter. I looked on Craigslist for a cheap deal. My father suggested I get different quotes, so I did in hopes that he would chip-in, but either way, now I can write a better review for all of you! Rocky from Ohana Tree Service was the first one I called. The other two had alot more reviews, but Rocky was the only one who came out with his insurance liability policy and he took notes of everything we wanted done. Let me just tell you, we are always game for a cheap 'under-the-table' cash deal, so usually the paperwork isn't important to us, and being a sales person myself, you can definitely feel the professional 'sales approach' Rocky is going for...but hey...we totally appreciated it, it definitely did give him an edge, especially with the unknown critters in this 'jungle' they had to tackle. Rocky is a soft spoken, approachable, knowledgeable man who impressively had an answer for every question. My mom and I felt really comfortable with him (vs. the other two estimators). He won't talk your ear off, he'll itemize every service, and keeps his promises (cuz he wrote everything down! yes, I really like that!) Needless to say, the yard is COMPLETELY clean and empty. All dog houses, old chairs, weeds, centipedes, jungle gym, everything!! The trees have been cut to the just the trunks and the stumps were shaved down as requested. Rocky came over and gave me an estimate. I agreed and signed a contract for $2500 to cut our tree to a lower height. He called several days later to say that his boss came over to check out the tree and that they wanted $3500 to do the job instead because the boss felt $2500 was not enough. I told Rocky to cancel the deal. I could have pursued making the company honor the contract, but I feel a business that does not honor a contract, which they would have made me do, is not one that I want to work with. People in this sort of business seem to charge whatever they like now since there is demand out there due to recent high winds. I have used this type of business a number of times--they also call me or stop by my house when business is slow despite not having impressed me with their previous work. By the way, before Ohana, I contacted four other companies in my search for reputable people, and they said they would come by. None followed up by phone or otherwise even after me having given my address--business seems to be too good right now. Update: A day after I wrote the review above, I was contacted by Rocky, who told me that they would do the job as signed after all. The job would take two days. Day 1 was slow going with several ground crew and one climber/cutter. The ground crew stood around a lot and occasionally tossed branches into a haphazard pile--I felt like just jumping in to get some work done. Day 2 was completely different. The crew was a bunch of real go-getters, who worked hard. I told Rocky about Day 1, and he said they were "they were the wrong guys"--meaning he wouldn't evaluate them highly job-performance-wise. I really liked their work on Day 2; however, somehow, a large piece of the tree was dropped on my rock wall and caused significant damage. Rocky said it would be taken care of, so I waited. I called and left messages on his cell phone but got no reply. To this day, the wall is crushed in that area. That is the reason although I would love to raise my rating in light of Day 2, I have to leave it at the rating originally given. I felt that he listened to what I had to say and understood my wishes for what had to be done around the yeard. Today's task was to trim an avocado tree that was approximately 30 years old and had never been trimmed or shaped. The tree was located on a steep hill which required all the branches to be hauled up to street level for disposal. Every cut was made and the limb tied off and lowered to the ground not dropped because there were houses below. They cleaned up everything when complete! I had a large tree which hung over my neighbor's property. When Rocky came to do the estimate, he said that is was an African Tulip tree and the large vines around the tree are difficult to cut. The estimate was reasonable and we scheduled for one week later. Four guys came. They did some trimming of the vines, partially cut the base of the tree, and pulled the tree down with a rope connected to the truck away from the neighbor's house. They worked for about 5 to 6 hours without a break, hauled everything away to the dump, and cleaned up all the rubbish (including some branches that were not part of the job). Let me begin this review by saying that my family and I were BEYOND impressed with Rocky's professionalism and getting the job done well. He's a truly dedicated guy that deserves all your business! Here's why: 1. I called the company around 6 pm, not expecting to talk to anybody, but just hoping to leave a message to inquire about a quote. I got a call back within the hour and had an appointment for the very next day. 2. Rocky called ahead of time, on the day of, to confirm our appointment time. When that time rolled around, he was prompt, courteous, and friendly! He even won over my notorious tough dad! 3. Rocky knows his stuff. Of all the companies we spoke to, he struck me and my parents as the most knowledgeable. He knew exactly which species of tree he was working with, what to do with it, and how to get the job done right to manage the tree's future growth. 4. He gave us a great quote! And an even better timeline! We wanted a big, two-story tree that had gotten way out of hand trimmed up, a second smaller tree trimmed, and a third tree totally removed. Rocky met with my husband and I on a Sunday last month and we told him about the palms (Areca and McArthur) that we wanted to cut down because they were warping our neighbors' fences on all three sides of the property. I was at a total loss when I received a letter from DLNR about shoreline vegetation. Moreover we also had coconut trees that needed trimming and a fruit tree that had to be removed. Finding someone to do this work is a challenge. Then, I found Rocky from Ohana Tree Services. He showed up (as scheduled) to give me an estimate for the work that needed to be done.
