Every time we walked by this place it was busy, so that was a good sign. In fact, when we were ready to eat here it was too busy. No problem, we walked around downtown Madison a little more. We went back about a half hour later and got a table right away. It's in a great old building with high ceilings and charm galore. That's not uncommon in Madison, Indiana since it has 133 contiguous blocks of buildings on the national register of historic places, but it's still way cool. It's set up to have live music - too bad we weren't there on a weekend. It's a casual, friendly atmosphere, and it was popular for groups. I was pleased to see several thoughtful vegetarian options on the menu (and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options are well labeled). I was even happier to learn that their black bean burgers and chickpea patties are made in-house. That's definitely a good sign. I opted for the chickpea burger that isn't fried (Buffalo Chick-Pea Sandwich), and I got it on sourdough instead of the bun. The patty was really nice, though the barbecue sauce they used was too sweet and tangy for my taste. Still, a nice sandwich though. I thought about upgrading to fries, but I stuck with the chips, and I was glad I did. The house made chips are delicious! All in all, this is a great place, and I look forward to returning next time I am in Madison. read more

Very impressed. In Madison today for the Chautauqua. Had been reading about Off Broadway Taproom here on Yelp and decided to try it for lunch. Honestly, I was expecting something a bit more stuffy and upscale from the reviews. I was THRILLED to find that it's just a basic bar serving great food and beer. Amicable people work at this place. The woman checking IDs, the guy behind the bar, and the servers, were all super nice. Our drink order was taken right away. I asked for an IPA suggestion and ended up ordering a King Sue from Toppling Goliath. Really tasty beer. I ordered the Rosemary Chicken in a wrap with tots and my partner ordered a small salad with grilled chicken on top. So...they got my order wrong and mistakenly brought the greek chicken sandwich in a wrap but you know what? It was SO damn good I didn't even mention it to the server. The wrap was amazing. The ingredients worked well together and it was delicious. And you cannot go wrong with deep-fried tater tots. Loved the food, the beer, the atmosphere and the service. We visited Madison for the day and decided to have lunch here. Food was good, but customer service was mediocre. The older gentleman acting as server was not as friendly as I hoped. He took our order and was so quick to walk away from our table before we were even finished placing our orders. He asked us twice what we wanted to drink because he had forgotten the first time. Maybe use a pen and a notepad in the future? I noticed he was interacting very well with what appeared to be his buddies, because he invested so much time to them and was so talkative to them. But I don't believe we received the same type of service. I tried making conversation with him, but he barely looked at me and quickly left our table. All I said to him was that the fried green tomatoes were the best I've ever had. I realize it gets busy at times when you work in a restaurant, but make a little effort to all your customers at least. Visitors and locals should be treated the same, especially in a business. The young man who brought our food to the table, however, was courteous. My tacos were okay, but the flour tortillas were cold. read more

We camped at Clifty Falls for my birthday weekend and decided to grab dinner here after 7 miles of hiking. The taproom seems popular with locals and visitors alike, with the wait for a table quickly piling up. The servers ignored us and moved around us as we waited, didn't ask if we wanted drinks. The space has a considerable gap between the bar and the seating that could likely be used to fit a few extra high tops, but maybe people stand around more as the night creeps on. Once we secured a table, our server pointed us to the TV which had their beer selection. I selected a peaches and cream fruit beer that wasn't very peachy but did the job fine. For dinner, I ordered the pepper jelly burger and a side of tater tots. Piled high with avocado and the jelly soaked the bottom bun. My only negative would be that they are taking up precious customer real estate by cluttering bar space with bar inventory- napkin holders, etc. That goes in the prep area.....save that space for your customers. It was a slow start to a Saturday morning. We were walking and saw the Off Broadway Taproom. We weren't in the door a half a minute and were greeted by the bartender, the hostess, and one family sitting down to eat their breakfast. Love the small-town charm! Our server was an absolute charmer, and even though he was busy, he took the time to make sure we knew what we were getting, as well as some of the specials they were offering. I had decided on my selection twice before he came over and I wound up changing it again after he came over! My wife ordered the Salmon Eggs Benedict, and I went with the Chicken & Waffles. Now, I'm not shorting the Chicken & Waffles - they were simply amazing - but she let me taste that blackened salmon with the hollandaise and oh my goodness did she ever win breakfast! Came by on a Friday night and it was very busy, but not too loud. Service was fantastic and attentive and the drinks were great. Went here for an early dinner (a little before 5pm) on a Saturday with my partner after a long day of hiking at Clifty Falls. We walked in and seated ourselves at a table, and were promptly greeted by our server. They didn't seem to know the tap menu off the top of their head, so we just checked out the screen above the bar to see what they had. My partner and I both ordered canned ciders, but they had what seemed to be a wide variety of beers on tap. For food, my partner ordered a burger with fried jalapeños on it and fries, and I ordered the veggie burger with tater tots. The food came out quickly and tasted great! There were some errors in our order; my partner asked for no tomato on their burger but they removed it from mine and not his. They also swapped our sides. However the food was really good. I loved the veggie burger patty; they can be very hit or miss and this one was definitely a hit! I really appreciated that they had a vegetarian section on the menu with multiple options. The menu itself was quite large and there were lots of choices that looked great; a wide variety of street tacos, sandwiches, burgers, and salads in particular. As far as ambience, this is definitely a "local" bar as other reviews stated. There isn't a clear or large sign that is visible from driving on the street so you could miss it. A lot of the patrons and workers seemed to know each other. That said, we didn't feel unwelcome or uncomfortable in any way. It did start to fill up as it got closer to 6pm. There is not a waiting area to sit to wait for a seat if everything is full. It's very much a fend for yourself/first come first served situation. Everything was great. We continually look for local places, even though we've been in the area for years. We decided to drop in, it was crowded and was seat yourself. Luckily there was a bar top table for 2 readily available. Server was very attentive, and was quick with 2 glasses of water w/o asking. It seems to be as the name says a taproom. BUT bey cool, Madison is known for its annual regatta, and at the end of the room was an unlimited hydroplane boat on the wall. So that was cool!! My wife had a California Chicken avocado wrap, and stated it was very good, so big she brought 1/2 home. I opted for the fish tacos which were excellent, on the side garnished with lime pieces and a pickled onion, they were light fried cod, and oh so tasty. I also ordered the house made chips, which were crispy, fried golden with very little salt. So don't be disappointed if you need to add some. I would rather they be less salty than the other way, you can always add. Needless to say we will be back. read more

The atmosphere is phenomenal and although it is a "bar food" menu, the quality is quite good. The Taproom Burger is one of the best burgers in town and we love the pretzel appetizer. The service can be slow at times, but that's usually because it is packed in there. Try and get a seat in the front windows if possible. On weekend evening there is live bands. The walls are covered with popular musicians of all era's. Plenty of four top tables. Rustic hardwood floors. High copper ceilings. Awesome vide. Gave off "neighborhood bar" comfort feel. Fried green tomatoes were crisp, not greasy, tasty remoulade. Greek salad not typical Greek but it was tasty. Smoked wings with Parmesan garlic sauce- didn't taste the garlic but the wings themselves were tender inside and crisp on outside and of a larger size than typical. The Off Broadway Taproom is a Madison favorite. The tacos are so tasty it's tough to choose a favorite. You really can't go wrong with any of them. However, last night I had the summer salad for the first time. It was off the chart delicious! It didn't even need the dressing. I added the chicken, which provided enough warmth for the goat cheese to melt as I stirred the ingredients together. YUMMM... the mandarin oranges and candied nuts added just enough sweetness to give the complex sweet/salty flavor that lifted this dish to next level amazing! Give it a try if you're in the neighborhood. The only reason the rating was dropped to 4 stars was the ambience. While I love live music, playing it so loudly that patrons cannot hear the person across the table is too loud, in my opinion, (but I'm old!). This was my first time venturing out for dinner and live music in months. Off Broadway did not disappoint! The waiters were accommodating when the band started set up, they moved us to a new table. There is no waiting inside for a table, so grab a drink (canned) and head outside to look at all the historic buildings until they call you. Upon sitting down the waiter came up and introduced us to the staff who would all be helping out. Wide variety of drinks at very affordable prices. The hot pretzel appetizer melts in your mouth. This place is nestled right on the main street in Madison. If you're here for a weekend stay, add this to the list. All about the fish tacos. I tried 3 different ones, fish, buffalo chicken and crawfish. All came fried (as expected) and with really good toppings for each flavor. We tried the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and they were perfectly crisp and the tomatoes in the best state of "unripe" that they don't pull out the whole tomato when you bite into them. Yum! With the appetizer I would have been better off with 2 tacos, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Burger- jalapeno Jelly is one to try! A giant juicy burger served with your choice of side.
