This was my first time and was so excited that I forgot to take pictures. The place is small and clean, so if you come with a small group expect to get cozy with another small group. Most tables were taken and people were coming in and out, so it stayed busy the whole time. It works like this, you get a big bowl and start putting in your ingredients choosing proteins, fish balls, noodles, greens, etc. Everything is labeled, but not directly next to the ingredients instead the labels are on screens high on the walls. After you create your bowl, it gets weighed (you pay by the pound) and you select the broth (with spice level). You are asked to wait at your table while they finish. I later found that I overdid it slightly and ended up with a 2 pound bowl. The food came out pretty quick and hot, our last step was to get our sauces. When I finally sat to eat I had so many things in there that every time I picked up something different to eat. Everything I tried was really good. I do think most of the ingredients are frozen, and I would guess the soup base is pre-made too, but for the price, I still think the quality is good. If you order more than 1.5 pounds and pay cash, you can get a free drink, which is a nice little deal. Atmosphere is just okay, around 3/5 for me. Service is also around 3/5. Recently, because it has been busy, you may have to wait a few minutes before getting seated. This place's parent company is Yin-Tang, if you've ever been to one. They are very similar except they don't have the dry skewer bar. Nonetheless, they have a good variety of everything you need: proteins, veggies, and noodles. I think the layout is just a little weird. The items are not labeled directly where you find them. It's actually all labeled in the screens above them. The soup selection is located behind you, when you pay, and not beside or above the cashier. When you get here, you'll understand why this is weird. It's a small place, sand there's only so much searing, so I except there's a wait often. Parking was also easy to find. The customer service was above average. They were really attentive and offered to refill our water even when we barely drank any, which I appreciated. I ordered the #1 beef bone broth (mild). It still had a spicy aftertaste, but it was super flavorful and perfect for a rainy day. I added tofu, crab, bok choy, spinach, quail egg, beef, seaweed, meatballs, egg noodles, sweet potato glass noodles, mushroom, and baby corn. There is a wide variety of ingredients to choose from and everything tasted fresh. Price came out to around $13 to $14 and the value is honestly amazing for how filling it is. A couple small downsides: it is not super clean or dirty, kind of in the middle. The sauce bar glass bottles felt oily and could definitely be wiped down more often. Since it was raining, the floor was pretty wet and the wet floor signs were just leaning by the check-in area. Seating is also extremely cramped, especially when there is a waitlist, and the place is loud with mostly college students. Overall, I would still 100% recommend it. We got the tomato broth and it was made with real tomato unlike other malatang places and the broth was my favorite tomato broth i've tried so far. The sauce at the self serve bar was really good and there were employees cleaning it (but maybe since it was close to closing). I do think everything seems to be refilled and maintained well. We paid in cash and got a free soda and they also do a stamp card system for 1 lb free for every 10 lbs you buy. This is why I'm giving the review 3 stars. I read bad reviews about service but I know that it's typically just normal at asian restaurants especially in the Rowland Heights (they have one location there) and SGV areas. The guy was kinda just ushering people along like cattle and pretty blunt with the way he was speaking. Not friendly at all and honestly kinda just starts the experience off a bit sour, but not a big deal to me. The other incident or star I removed is because there was a "new" napkin that was placed by our utensils prior to us sitting down. While I was talking to my gf mid eating, I opened the napkin and wiped my mouth. I kinda felt something dry and hard on my face (gross) and saw that it was a used napkin with a bunch of spicy stains and soup droplet spots inside. Basically they thought it was an unused napkin and wanted to be frugal and took it back and turns out it was used and folded so the used part was inside and the outside appeared new.
