First Visit Experience My wife and I tried Sushi R 91 in Riverside for the first time, and overall it was a good experience with a few areas that could be improved. I ordered the beef ramen, and the flavor was great. The beef tasted really good, and the broth had nice depth. I do wish they offered more condiments on the table so you can adjust the broth to your liking--spicy, savory, etc. My food took a little while to come out, but it ended up being worth the wait. I feel like this place gets worse every time I come. I love a good post-workout sushi and there's always happy hour around the time I finish training. I ordered a few rolls and the fresh rolls were fine. The tempura and baked rolls were a huge mistake. Everything fried tasted like it was fried 5 hours ago... Cold, stale, mushy... agh. Somehow the takoyaki was actually much better than the rolls which makes me suspect that they are a packaged/frozen brand that's just fried to order. The takoyaki was missing aonori, but they were fried fresh and each piece had a nice crispy shell and a gooey interior. An entire vegan roll section?!! Yes!!! Don't sleep on these options, my friend who got the Santa Monica roll liked my Magoto roll, it's a very unique and nicely balanced flavor profile, the sweetness of the mango with the savory and salty flavors was delicious! I also liked the crispy tofu roll I've had in the past a lot. I'm not giving 5 stars because it seems like the happy hour discount doesn't apply to the vegan rolls, which doesn't make sense to me since the vegan rolls are probably all cheaper to produce. I also feel that the portion sizes are a bit small so just keep that in mind! I like the vibe and ambiance of the restaurant, and appreciate the cleanliness and space in the private bathroom. Stand out budget rolls are Salmon Tataki and ceviche, both are on the $10 menu. The ramen is great, the pork belly bowl is tasty. They are generous with the edamame and my drink is the ginger mule. I thought the sashimi looked really good, but the spicy tuna might have a slight discoloration. The Ramen was pretty spicy for level one, which is something I thoroughly enjoyed. It had plenty of toppings, and the happy hour included an additional free side dish. I opted in for another four piece spicy tuna roll. I thought our waitress was responsive to our requests, and we didn't really wait that long to get seated and to order. In fact, the sushi came out very quickly, less than five minutes after ordering. Some of the small nit picking things are that the menus were wet from being wiped down, or that the table kind of feels wet and sticky from a beer spill. For a place that feels like a bar, but also offers pretty good selection of fish, I'd recommend this. This is a pretty good place to hang out with alcohol! read more

Not very good-- It's fine and will do in a pinch, being local and all, but the quality is definitely lacking. Their fish is fresh enough that you won't get sick, but it's not at the level of an authentic sushiya in either freshness or knifework. Their tempura is also too oily and not salted enough, so it's a little heavy without much flavor. On the flip side, the value isn't bad. Their lunch deal runs until 3:00pm, and you can get 3 items for $19.95. Note that this is actually a pretty significant increase from a few years ago (I remember it being $14.95), but food everywhere is getting more expensive. It might be worth driving out a little farther and splurging just a little more, but again, location matters. Service is pretty slow. Not enough waiters, maybe? My husband and I came in for lunch today, and overall the food was truly delicious. We had the rainbow roll, the happy ending roll, and miso soup -- the flavors were fresh, balanced, and some of the best sushi we've had in the area. By the time I arrived, my miso soup had started to cool, and our server immediately offered to replace it with a hot one, which I appreciated. The only part of the experience that left me disappointed was the ordering process during the lunch special window. My husband arrived earlier and placed the order, but the server didn't mention that he could've ordered the lunch special -- which includes two rolls for the same price as the single roll he ordered. When we asked if they could switch it to the lunch special (since it was clearly the better value), they said they "didn't have the code" to make that adjustment. It felt like an avoidable issue and not the best customer service moment. That said, the food itself was fantastic, and the hospitality in other areas was appreciated. I'm giving four stars because I genuinely enjoyed the meal, but I do hope the staff gets better training on honoring lunch specials and providing clear guidance to customers. When I first got into the restaurant I had to wait about 5 minutes before the host came. The restaurant was packed but still had a few tables open so I understand the wait. I told the waitress I was going alone and as we walked in she said since you are alone I will put you at the bar so we don't waste a table. I thought that was a little rude but didn't say anything. I was sat by the sushi station and the chef was really nice we had a good conversation. When I ask my server for some ginger and wasabi she nod and gave me a chopstick helper which I didn't need. I found a coupon at the gym for this restaurant and that's what brought us there. Husband and I are both big Sushi fans. We had actually eaten sushi the night before for me. This was even better.
