Rob has cared for our house for decades. He is reliable, economical, skillful, thoughtful, and thorough. He converted an old hotwater heater enclosure to a pantry that is now essential. He built a cabinet to enclose a dishwasher. He rebuilt a bathroom fan whose motor had failed, fixed a hole in drywall, mounted an outdoor heater and many, many other things. Often Rob will think of an elegant, original, and inexpensive way to solve a problem. He anticipates what tools and supplies he will need, and brings them with him. He is considerate of our being at home, tidies up before he leaves, and bills reasonably for his time. Phoning and leaving him a voicemail is the best way to engage him. We've been using Rob at our house in the Oakland hills for at least 8 years. By the way, yes he has a ladder and a freeway-ready car!! And beyond that, he's a great handyman: reliable, honest, totally competent, reasonably priced, and respectful of your property. I've referred him to friends who are equally pleased. Rob can do anything inside or outside, from minor repairs to light plumbing to assembling our big gas BBQ in the backyard. If it's hard core electrical or plumbing (internal wiring, etc) that he's not equipped for, he'll tell you up front. I was very disappointed in Rob Kantor. Most of the tasks I asked him to take on, he said he didn't do, including painting an iron stair railing, caulking a kitchen sink, cutting down the legs of a rustic dining table, etc. The one task he took on, which was that my music didn't consistently play through one of my speakers. It would come in and out. He said he believed he fixed that latter problem by re-stapling the wire in places, but actually what he did not fix the problem. So I paid him $75 (his hourly rate) for one small task of covering up the wiring to my phone system with a small plastic plate. read more

I moved to the Bay Area a few years back and have long needed a handful of jobs done - but didn't really know who up here might be trustworthy or affordable. Finally I had to get the work done - checked Yelp to see who seemed to get good ratings - and chose Rob. And I could not be happier that I did. You never really know if five-star reviews are really reflective of the person or the work - and Rob's are! 100%. First off, he's thoughtful, caring, tries to understand what you want done and how it might best be effected, and utterly responsible. And on top of that his work is great - and as affordable as it is excellent. Not all the work I needed done was easy: a closet bar had had to be rehung in drywall, a lamp fixture had to be hung and wired, a tv had to be fixed to a wall, an unsupported mantle had to fixed above a fireplace, and - most difficult - some immense paintings I have had to be hung very high up (12 - 15 feet) in a difficult-to-hang space that barely accommodated a ladder and which were challenging to say the least. And he not only did it all, but did it great! It ended up being more affordable than I expected and it all looks fabulous. I will not only work with Rob again - he will be the handyman I use for as long as he cares to keep doing this kind of work. Don't hesitate to work with Rob. He's great! read more

Rob called to remind me of our meeting, arrived on time, re-set the hinges on a "fine" piece of furniture (I was worried but he did it PERFECTLY), added handles to a cabinet, and built a solid little railing for the top of my stairs.
