This is a very friendly, nice, down to earth spot in Greenpoint. The fact that the owner as well as the staff are so accommodating to the customers is a godsend. There are many places in Brooklyn that serve specialty coffee. Most of those places are staffed by individuals who - while they might be highly trained professionals - they have very bad customer service skill sets. The staff of Odd Fox - while actually better trained than the staff at other local shops along Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint - are also well versed in customer service and are also highly accommodating to their guests; and always. The owner is a well trained and highly educated coffee professional who makes sure his staff are always keeping up with their industry training. The espresso and the filter brew (all of which are Roasted by Parlor Coffee) are always correctly dialed-in and target extraction parameters and (TDS - Total dissolved solids) - are always within industry acceptable ranges. The physical details of the shop are also always well maintained. The fact that the guest restroom is always clean and well stocked is a miracle of great skill in such a high volume location. Anyone who works within the coffee industry and/or the service industry in NYC will grasp and understand just how hard maintaining a clean and well-stocked customer restroom in a high volume shop in NYC can be. The fact that they also place great care and importance into well-maintained equipment, ongoing staff training, and industry education for staff, as well as excellent customer service, provides the whole package for one who appreciates specialty - aka 3rd wave - coffee and wants to relax and enjoy themselves while out at a shop. Also, they go out of their way to keep prices at a beyond reasonable level. I am actually dumbfounded by how inexpensive the shop menu is as I also work within the specialty coffee industry in NYC and know what the average menu prices are throughout Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. Odd Fox, is very reasonable compared to other shops in the area. A nice side note to this review, since the warm weather will soon be upon us, is they do utilize the Toddy Method so you get actual Cold Brew. I am unsure of the steep time they use but I have to suspect it is within the 14 to 24 hour range most use. The Cold Brew (taken Black with no milk, sugar, or syrup) has a nice silky body with lots of rich coco. chocolate, touches of warm raisins on the back-end, and the mouthfeel that lingers afterwards is clean. read more

Let me start by saying I love Greenpoint, its such a different vibe when compared to its surrounding areas. Odd Fox is a gem, it's so a cozy spot with great coffee (Cortado, please), comfortable vibes, and it places great music (I'm a sucker for good R&B). Of all the coffee shops I am aware of, which I have done my research for Brooklyn as well as Manhattan, I believe this is a solid top 10. In Greenpoint, it makes the list to being top 3. It is low-key enough to not be a huge tourists coffee shop like Devocion (see my review). It is chill enough to get some hours of work done here. Seating can be tight, better than a subway during rush hour on a Monday. + peculiar idea of art: There are frames with no photos in them. In the world of art, this is considered art... Very modern. + backyard access: there is a backyard with benches to relax and chill at. Personally, I enjoy being indoors during the Summer because heat is something I could do without. I prefer cooler climates. However, if you don't mind soaking up shaded space from the sun and among the bugs, definitely come check out the space. + 3 stools: Seating here has normal desk chairs. In addition, there are 3 stools located at the front where you can post up and watch people or have people watch you as if you were a mannequin in a study position. This spot can be great for standing while doing work as well. As some of the literature says, "standing is better than sitting." CONS: - pricey: ...a cup of coffee for $2.25? Water mixed with some beans from Colombia shouldn't cost that much. #therentistoodamnhigh. That can buy you enough coffee to make at home for 1 week. - hypocritical staff: There was that started out when I first moved to NYC. This is a funny story: I remember I was on an important phone call. I was taking the phone call in the front of the store. I believe it was really hot or I had my work all spread out over the table which prevented me from wanting to take the phone call in the backyard or outside. Following the phone conversation, she admonished me for taking the phone call indoor. I was trying to be considerate with my volume. In my history, I have always known to take phone calls outside a room occupied by others. I go out of my way often to be considerate to others. What makes this story funny is she was telling me that my conversation she heard was distracting. Yet, the music that was playing was way louder and something I had noted upon arriving that day. I just found it pretty funny that she was admonishing me out of consideration for others, when the music that she was playing was blaring and loud. Nevertheless, I apologized. It didn't bother me; I had noise-cancellation headphones :) IMPRESSION: Good reliable spot to get some work done. I like getting work done here. Read the aforementioned items for pros and cons. When I discovered odd fox; after a local coffee shop closed, was one of my happier days in Brooklyn. The baristas always have a smile on their faces and very friendly. With a nice window to hangout in, and plenty of shared seats and a sweet backyard for private phone calls I could almost live here...hell, I may have legally lived here for a few weeks. Very great atmosphere, quiet, respectful, good music, AND the coffee is amazing! I had a weakness for their Oat Mocha. Plus, their name and logo is one of my favorite animals AND my spirit animals. When I look for a place to get out of the house to do work, I look for a positive community and Odd Fox is that exactly. Many coffee shops in Brooklyn meet my baseline criteria for a spot to write: - Wi-Fi - Outlets - Seating And then from there, the extras start to sprinkle on top- - Gluten-Free treats - Interesting decor - Walking distance from my apartment Odd Fox has a good slew of these extras, making it a delightful spot for a Saturday afternoon plop down and work session. I especially love their different seating options! They have all of the coffee shop classics - the well-lit counter against the window, the large communal table in the back, a smattering of smaller tables and chairs with seats both structured and more comfortable - plus they have some unique options as well. I personally love the desk that peeks through the indoor window into the back room. Great spot for an earl grey, a gluten free peanut butter cookie, and an afternoon of writing. If only it were open late night on weekdays, then it would become my go to spot! Alas, it will just have to stay in the weekend rotation. read more

Although I learned that Parlor doesn't use Swiss water method for its decafs but the ethyl acetate which is a less pure method. I will be sticking to their regular coffees now. Best little coffee shop/internet cafe in Greenpoint. Great coffee and teas (try the Assam), pastries and cakes(raspberry poppyseed) with a cute back garden and friendly staff who know how to make the perfect coffee. We love the fact that the background music is always great, doesn't seem randomly chosen and is never intrusive if you need to work, combine that with cool retro decor makes for the best ambience in a cafe we've found in a while. Feel like I walk past this coffee shop every time I'm in Greenpoint and am always tempted to come in due to the cute name. Finally stopped by for a drink and a snack a few weeks ago, and discovered the inside is a lovely place to hang out - lots of tables and fairly spacious. They also have an outdoor space in the back, which seems like a gamechanger come springtime. I had a hot apple cider (which, props to them for serving one in the first place) and the banana bread, which was moist and delicious even in the late afternoon. Sad to see the original owner of Propeller Coffee move back to Canada, but the commentary regarding the staff was pretty accurate, morbid and shiftless. The new spot has changed the signage and not much else (cheaper that way). Overall the staff seems a bit better, and the Prospect Blend Cold Brew is decent. When it comes to coffee in Brooklyn, this place is at least another option on a growing menu of franchisees shops and territory snatchers ($tarBucks, etc.) read more

I love trying new coffee shops, especially in Greenpoint as I'm here a few days a week to walk dogs. I would stop in here every once in awhile when it was Propeller. Now that it is now Odd Fox I still stop in once in awhile. Typically I go to sweetleaf, however, this is more on my route, so maybe twice a month I will stop at this location. I'm loving the gold sign on the front windows. Something my girl Joanna Gaines would do. It really sticks out too. The font was a perfect choice for the antique & vintage look on the inside. As far as the inside, it's relatively plain. It has a decent amount of sitting, which is pretty much all I can ask for. Also love the bar seating at the window. I don't ever really sit and stay, but it's so nice to see people drinking their coffee there. Definitely makes the place looks busy, which is a great sign for great coffee ;) As far as the customer service (which is what I consider the absolute most important - more than the coffee) it has improved 100% over the past few months. I came in the other days and had a lovely conversation with a gentleman with longish hair about my phone case. A couple months ago I was lucky to even get the woman at the bar to tell me the price without rolling her eyes. A huuuuge turn off no matter how good the coffee is. But I'm glad to see how nice and friendly everyone has been lately! The coffee is really good. They also have a small selection of pastries and baked goods in the front. Those are definitely not as good and not worth the price. Just stick to the coffee and grab a clif bar or something from the deli down the block. I had a peanut butter cookie recently and it tasted like what I would imagine the peanut butter treats I feed the pups I walk lol I'm assuming the place gets these delivered and not made on site, therefore can't really hate much! There are two things I don't like about this place, which is why I knocked a star off. It's pricey. As someone who just likes coffee and wouldn't consider themselves a coffee guru, it's a bit much for my needs. However, I have friends who are willing to pay a lot for good quality coffee, so this is their place. I'm quite happy with a cup of Folgers at home so you can imagine I don't like paying $$$ for coffee when I'm out and about. Another thing is their sandwich boards outside. Idk why, but I absolutely hate them. I think whatever they write on them is kind of dumb. We were in the neighborhood and stopped by to kill some time before meeting with some friends for dinner. I really enjoyed spending time in here, not just for the air conditioning on that blazing hot day in the summer, but the relaxed vibe of this coffee shop really rubbed me the right way. We were surrounded by people on their laptops or working on papers, and it was quiet, it felt like we were in a library. They also encourage communal seating and there's plenty of it with a small, semi-private room in the back. Of course there's wi-if and outlets which means you can get a lot done while enjoying your brew and treats. They have great coffee and pastries and the service is super friendly. Easily the best coffee in Greenpoint! I'm Australian, and am so picky with NY coffee so trust me. Super quick service if you're in a hurry to catch the G, or the Ferry but also free wifi and chilled areas to hide from the world for hours.
