My friend and I stopped by after visiting the 4th St shops since we were lured in by the red booths and the traditional American diner interior! One of the things I noticed quickly about the place was how nice everybody was! I loved our server who reminded us of George Lopez because he was just as funny. Absolutely do not go here if you are solo or a party of two and would like to sit at a table inside. Their seating policy stipulates that even if there is a 3-4 top free and noone else waiting, a party of two may not sit down because the staff has to hold their last free table for a party of 3-4. This means they will only seat a duo at a table if there are TWO booths free. In other words, if you are waiting for a second table to clear but a larger party comes in... your loss. They get seated immediately but you now have to wait for two more tables to clear.. Needless to say, customers that are single or in pairs could end up waiting for hours while groups of three and four just keep getting seated ahead of them. I recently came here with a friend on a cold, weekday morning. We added ourselves to the waitlist and waited for a while. Then, when we were finally "next", we were told that we were only allowed to sit at the counter bar stools or outside on the plastic chairs even though there was a clear booth right in front of us and noone else in line behind us. Since I recently had surgery and couldn't sit on a barstool and didn't want to sit on the plastic chairs outside, I asked them to please nevertheless seat us inside. But alas, no empathy and the rude host just pointed to a placard that explains the seating policy and insisted we would have to keep waiting til he had two open tables. Whenever that would be. Just then, a party of three came in, didn't even add their name to the list and were seated ain that empty booth without waiting at all. Needless to say, we left and instead went to one of the many cool cafes on San Pablo south of University. Don't go to this place. Oceanview Diner is the restaurant that's known for its breakfast. Oceanview To Go is the bakery, cafe, and deli next door that sells sandwiches, bagels, baguettes, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, soups, salads, hot dogs, pizzas, pastries, desserts, coffee, and other snacks and drinks. From April 5, 1982 to January 16, 2022, Oceanview Diner was known as Bette's Oceanview Diner and Oceanview To Go was known as Bette's To Go. These were named after founder and owner Bette Kroening. Bette died in 2017 and her husband Manfred kept the business running through the pandemic. Former employees took over ownership and operation of the business and reopened it on March 10, 2022. It didn't stay closed for long. This is a popular local restaurant and it's great folks figured out a way to keep it going. Unsurprisingly, both Oceanview Diner and Oceanview To Go were busy during our Saturday visit just before 1pm. Pretty much every seat was taken inside and out (dining room and outdoor sidewalk patio). We were able to snag the corner table by the stairs inside Oceanview To Go, but there isn't really much seating to speak of on the To Go side. It's really a takeout joint. The vibe is classic and old school. As far as the aesthetics go, it's like taking a step back in time to the glass blocks of the 80s and the black-and-white checkered floors of classic diners. I love it. Grab-and-go food is on display in various cases and countertops, and they prepare made-to-order food as well. I got my Caramel Latte to go.
