My friend and I stopped by after visiting the 4th St shops since we were lured in by the red booths and the traditional American diner interior! One of the things I noticed quickly about the place was how nice everybody was! I loved our server who reminded us of George Lopez because he was just as funny. We split the California breakfast and the waffle and it was definitely enough food for the two of us! The waffle was pretty standard, but I was surprised by how good the CA breakfast was because the ham edges were grilled and charred perfectly. The omelette was enjoyable with herbs and a soft custard-like texture while the potatoes were average. You have the option to choose your carbs, so I chose a baguette that was buttery and tasty. My cousin had Two Eggs with Chorizo but she received sausage. We both left full, so portions were good for the price. I really like when restaurants have outside dining in these strange times, but it was super cold outside as typical, foggy weather in SF bay area would have it. We waited outside as it was a beautiful day and were able to listen to names being called out for seating. They had outdoor seating in which the furry guests were able to join. We were finally sat around 1:20 inside and the place was bustling. They do close at 2:00. Our order was taken about 10-15 minutes after we sat. It was delivered about 20-25 minutes after. We ordered huevos rancheros, potato pancakes, chicken sandwich, side bacon, lemonade and coffee. I was impressed with everything we got. We also ordered the meatloaf for takeout!! It feels like they are annoyed and the host screams for the names of people in such a harsh way it is really uncomfortable. No one who works here smiles. Cute little diner. VERY busy on a Saturday mid morning. We were seated in the back and it was very noisy back there. I don't think the noise level was as bad up front. They also have a patio/tent area set up outside that was very nice. One thing, when they are busy, they won't seat you until all of your party if present. We had three people and they put our group back online until I showed up. I had the Mexican scramble and it was delicious! The way the eggs were made, they were so creamy & flavorful. It can with 2 large sausage rounds made with Chorizo, very good black beans topped with some sour cream and some salsa and a fried tortilla. I would definitely get this again. My brother had the Maryland which was corn beef hash with extras and he liked it very much, it's his "go to" breakfast when he eats here. The servers were polite and kept the coffee and drinks full and the gentleman at the register was very friendly. The cost was average for this area. The inside of the diner is retro with a good amount of seating both at the counter, at booths, and outside. The food came out in a timely manner and the restaurant staff were very pleasant. If you're looking for some yummy pastries and/or coffee while on Fourth Street, Oceanview To Go gets my recommendation. Oceanview Diner and Oceanview To Go are the same business. Oceanview Diner is the restaurant that's known for its breakfast. Oceanview To Go is the bakery, cafe, and deli next door that sells sandwiches, bagels, baguettes, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, soups, salads, hot dogs, pizzas, pastries, desserts, coffee, and other snacks and drinks. From April 5, 1982 to January 16, 2022, Oceanview Diner was known as Bette's Oceanview Diner and Oceanview To Go was known as Bette's To Go. These were named after founder and owner Bette Kroening. Bette died in 2017 and her husband Manfred kept the business running through the pandemic. Former employees took over ownership and operation of the business and reopened it on March 10, 2022. It didn't stay closed for long. This is a popular local restaurant and it's great folks figured out a way to keep it going. Unsurprisingly, both Oceanview Diner and Oceanview To Go were busy during our Saturday visit just before 1pm. Pretty much every seat was taken inside and out (dining room and outdoor sidewalk patio). We were able to snag the corner table by the stairs inside Oceanview To Go, but there isn't really much seating to speak of on the To Go side. It's really a takeout joint. The vibe is classic and old school. As far as the aesthetics go, it's like taking a step back in time to the glass blocks of the 80s and the black-and-white checkered floors of classic diners. I love it. Grab-and-go food is on display in various cases and countertops, and they prepare made-to-order food as well. I got my Caramel Latte to go. Came on a Monday late morning close to 11:00 didn't get asked for our order until 15min later, had to give a wandering look for a server to please take our order look. They are chaotic and not on point. This is the second time I've been here and it was a while back on my first visit and I did not survey them back then figuring that busy experience was unfair, well I can say that today it's time to provide my insight , the only difference was that the first time it was super busy and we waited in line and the service was slow due to them being busy. Well today was not busy, 3 servers at hand and place is not that big but the service really disappointed me. Water served 10min after being seated. Coffee severed 10min after order (not a good impression). Food is just ok but I would not come back . Our server guy mingled with everyone but us, Now I'm certain the ambiance is all it has going for itself. Food is just ok, but if you're not a regular here you will find the slowness and tentativeness lacking. Twice is enough visit for me. Would have given 2 stars but the female host was very good. We got seated about 15-20 minutes after waiting outside on the restaurant side that is used for evening service "wine and pancakes " . My friend and I went here for brunch on Saturday ~9:30 and it was crowded. Although it was busy, they seated us quickly. A helpful tip is to let the staff know when your whole party arrives because they will not seat groups until the whole party is there. There were indoor and outdoor seating options. The inside has a traditional diner feel and it has a lively ambiance. My friend and I were seated at the counter and were able to see the chefs making food which was a very neat experience. The service was attentive and to the point. I thought that there was a good variety of items on the menu. I ordered the lox scramble and my friend got a bunch of things a la carte (potatoes, morning bun that is made in house, and sausage). The bagel that came in with my scramble was good. The eggs, however, were very runny and wet which I did not enjoy that much. The lox pieces in the scramble added a nice saltiness to the dish. The potatoes and onions that came in with my scramble were oddly cooked. Some of the potatoes were over cooked and the other half was undercooked. Both were very bland and I didn't think that they added that much to the dish. The cream cheese for my bagel had the texture of feta cheese; it was very dry and tough to spread. My friend and I also got the Soufflé pancake which was strawberry and pear flavored. I thought that the pancake was fluffy and had a nice fruit taste. I thought that this was worth the additional wait. Overall, I think that Oceanview Diner was just ok. The actual breakfast items that I ate aside from the pancake were very forgettable and some aspects of my breakfast I would not want to eat again.
