I wish I were writing a positive review like so many others, but unfortunately I can't. I'm writing this because I hope Ocean Remodel learns from what happened so other customers don't have the same experience. My project was straightforward: remove and haul away my existing 24' x 17' deck roof and install a new aluminum roof. One critical requirement was that a portion of the new roof be reinforced with plywood so it could safely support the weight of a repair person accessing the bedroom window above. Ocean Remodel assured me this was work they regularly do. Mike came out to inspect and measure the project. I clearly explained my requirements, showed him the window above the roof, and asked what product he planned to use so I could do my own research before signing. The initial quote was $5,600, but it contained no details about the materials or scope of work. When I called the office, Karen told me Mike would provide the product information only after I signed the agreement. I refused to sign without knowing what I was paying for. I eventually learned Mike planned to use 29-gauge corrugated aluminum. Based on my research, 29-gauge aluminum is too thin to safely support a person's weight, and corrugated panels were not what I requested. When I asked why he chose that material, Mike simply said that's what they use for deck roofs. It was clear my requirements had either been overlooked or ignored. I insisted on 24-gauge aluminum panels instead, which increased the quote by $900. Although the revised price exceeded my budget, I agreed because I wanted the roof built correctly. We then went through three rounds of revisions to correct missing and inaccurate information in the agreement before I finally signed and paid the deposit. The project was scheduled for Thursday and Friday. On Monday, Mike texted that someone would come Tuesday to measure for the plywood. The person who arrived had no understanding of the project's scope. I patiently explained everything, but he then told me he wasn't available Friday and would need to return Monday to finish the job. He also said the project might take longer than two days. Concerned, I immediately called Mike. He explained the employee was supposed to call him before coming to my door so Mike could brief him on the project. Then, around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday--just days before work was scheduled to begin--Mike called to say he had made a mistake when measuring. The roof was actually 408 square feet, not the 300 square feet listed in the signed contract. By then, I had already signed the agreement, paid my deposit, and arranged my work schedule to be home during construction. I asked whether Ocean Remodel could absorb the additional cost since the error was entirely theirs. Mike said he would look into it and call me back. After 8:00 p.m., he called again--not to honor the original price, but to cancel the job and refund my deposit. The revised price jumped from $6,500 to $8,800. After all the time spent reviewing and correcting their paperwork, coordinating schedules, paying the deposit, and preparing for the project, having it canceled because of their own measuring error was incredibly frustrating. This was the worst contractor experience I've had. My hope is that Ocean Remodel improves its estimating, communication, and project planning processes so future customers don't have to go through what I did. read more
